Confederate Athletic Report
We here at The Spill feel that it is only fair for you foreigners who are visiting Kalia or who will be viewing the Interstellar Galactic Games be given the full scoop on the history of Kalian Athletics. Therefore, we present to you a brief synopsis of the Confederations sports.
As the orchestraters of the games, Kalia has high expectations placed upon it as a competitor in the games. Having been richly steeped in military simulation games, Kali Corp made a regular practice of keeping those under its domain, be they employees or just residents, healthy and happy. Many leagues had naturally been opened, laying the foundation for solid athletic ability today. In the poor sectors, Football has always been a favorite sport, being played in the streets with nothing but a ball of rags when the situation demanded. It is a sport of the people.
However, the athleticism bestowed upon the Confederates by Kali Corp is not fully balanced, and Kalias relatively low population in relation to say, The Emergents, provides it with a much smaller talent pool from which to draw. An overview of the national teams which will be participating in the games is as follows:
Gyro-Hockey: Relatively new to the sport, the Confederation is still getting used to the game. It has never had a league in such a field, but the athletes-in-training feel marginally competent, perhaps due to their general fitness and talent in the other sports from which they were drawn.
Hide and Pounce: Not too far a cry from the team versions of Kalian dueling, a team has been cobbled together from hand-to-hand duelists, who are learning to work together and have been in intensive training since the games announcement.
Tennis: The sport of corporate executives, who happen to have generally been wiped out by the Scourge, Kalia does not show much promise in this category. The single exception might be Richie Smentz, who is somewhat of a prodigy, but has yet to be tested outside of the streets.
Furian Football: Kalia is, yet again, new to this sport and is coping to the best of its ability. Its relative similarities to American Football and Rugby mean that most of the players are of Scottish or American ancestry. It is hard to determine how well they will fare in this brutal contact sport.
Baseball: Common in Kalia, the baseball league has been alive for many years, thriving despite harsh times. Currently, the Tal Justices are the cup holders, with a seasonal record of 14-2-2. They are closely followed by the Kalianna Eagles, who were defeated in the semifinals by what many consider a bad call. None of the other teams come anywhere close in talent, they have dominated the league for the past six years. There has been talk of merging the two rival times to form an all star team to send to the IGG
should the Eagles and Justices be able to settle their differences. The other (more likely) option is to have a game between the two to determine which will represent the Confederation at Sol.
Basketball: Yet another popular Sol sport, basketball has been going strong since the end of the Scourge, and the local leagues profit more than all the theatres in Kalianna combined. An all-star team is being assembled to represent Kalia.
European Football: The pride of Kalianna City, the Munich Elites have been undefeated and the uncontested champions of Kalia Football since the Club was formed in 2 AS. They are considered a powerhouse and a favorite among betters, and representing Kalias most popular sport, they have every right to be proud of what they have done.
Kalian Dueling: An estimated 78 contestants from Kalia have met the high Kalian qualifications for the games, however only 30 will be allowed to go. These masters of their craft are currently training for a free-for-all face-off to determine which will go and which will stay. Kalian duelists are strong in all categories, but if a weakness had to be selected it would be close-combat.
Solar Yachting: Rik Svenson, current Kalia cup holder, has been selected to headline the Kalian racing delegation to the IGG. He will be accompanied by teammates Jon Yttar and Erik Bridgeton.
Uberathalon: Kalias planetary climates are more temperate than most, therefore lacking enough good extreme weather locations for any large amount of skill in either the mountain climbing or skiing sections of the race. However, the sheer existence of multiple core worlds in the system warrants that the varied climate will provide good enough training locations.

Track and Field: Popular among students, track and field competitions have been a healthy way to escape the educational monotony of university. A moderately skilled team is being sent to represent Kalia.
Cross-Country Skiing and Freestyle Snowboarding: While not blessed with excellent slopes or snowy terrain, a fairly well trained group of individuals has been selected, and is expected to do at least moderately well, although it is generally expected that the skiers nor snowboarders will be able to overcome their Hurisian counterparts.
Ice Skating: Not the most popular sport in the Confederation, racing and dance skating both have a cult following, and Nikita Vissaronavich is the crowd favorite dancer.
Starcraft: The ever-popular and immortal Star Craft has a large following in Kalia, due to its surprisingly large Korean population. The team selected to attend, known only as W3_pWn_n00Bz, won the fiercely contested finals tournament by a landslide, and is a favorite in the games. However, the five member team does not expect victory to be easy, with other fierce competitors in the running.
Overall, the Kalian teams look promising, and the entire population of Kalia looks forward to the games with much anticipation and a surprising amount of national pride. Emerald Eagle flags can be seen everywhere, and a parade is slated for next Thursday. The games look promising indeed.
