NiNES: A Broken Galaxy

Dropping it right now!

Today's homework: Read and review the datafile "The Rain of Alpha Centauri". Hand in 300 words on how your life would be changed if you lived on AC Prime and 200 words on how changes in weather are being effected or how you would effect them. Suggest you peruse all linked documents in said datafile. You may use the AC Portal to speak to inhabitants of Alpha Centauri Prime.

"Sigh... more read&write stuff."

Datafile: "The Rain of Alpha Centauri"
Attached neural file for simulator use: "Feel the Rain".
[Alpha Centauri Prime | see: Alpha Centauri system] was [colonized | see: colony ships] four years ago during the tenure of [President Churchill | see: Nicholas Churchill]. Prior to that, the [Scourge | see: Scourge] had destroyed most of the [weather satellites | see: satellite weath control] and left only a few that served to maintain torrential rain, constant floods and [tsunamis | see: weathastrophe] hundreds of metres high at regular intervals. Our [fleet's | see: Hunter Killer class] destruction of these left Alpha Centauri reduced to merely near-constant rain, as the weather system was [not stable | see: habitability conditions of Alpha Centauri Prime]. Attempts to use [Fighters | see: Fighter class] to [seed | see: cloud seeding] the rain into cessation have proved futile, due to the inherently unstable weather. Life on Alpha Centauri Prime is hence dictated in large part by the pervasive rain, meaning that special dry areas have to be constructed and maintained, and some machinery [adapted | see: machine tolerance] to the higher humidity. Another hinder is that during heavier rains, most long-range signals must be run at high power, as [infrared | see: electromagnetic spectrum] and visible radiation is dampened and absorbed and the storms generate sonic white noise. Use the attached simulation to explore these and other similar effects in greater detail. The canonical example of adaptation is that shoes manufactured for use on Alpha Centauri Prime need better gripping surfaces. Research is under way to redevelop weather satellites with which to tame Alpha Centauri Prime. Note that, as linked above, the planet is not naturally rainy, merely unstable, and has been locked into the current situation due to the rain satellites being the last to be destroyed.

Overview of Huris' teams Sent to the Intergalactic Games

The Planet Huris has a mix of lush and rich regions and extremely inhospitable areas scattered around its surface. It has around 30% water coverage, much of the planet's smaller than usual water supply being contained within the glacial ice caps of the northern and southern poles.

This situation has helped to shape many facets of the Hurisian experience. The one I shall focus on now is sports and recreation.

The large number of mountains and cold regions have been excellent for encouraging skiing and other cold-weather sports. Many of these events were crushed when the IG Corporation came to power during the early years of the scourge. However, they were all revived when the oppressive corporation was overthrown.

Huris also has a long tradition of track and field. It was one of the few sports that remained through IG Rule, generally used to keep the 'employees' fit.

We look forward to our chances in the first IG Games, and hope that they are succesful and remain so in the future.

Reports on Hurisian Teams
Gyro-Hockey: Huris' All-Star team has now been training together for several weeks. The adjustment from Ice to Gyro-Hockey rules has been quick and generally successful. The Hurisian Hockey team is mixed in age, from skillful rookies to champion veterans close to retirement from the sport. It is a mixed-specialty team, with several tough players, and a deadly-fast offensive core. Goaltending and Defense are fairly strong, though not as much as the potent offense. The league's premier goaltender, Ramis Astram suffered from a transportation accident during the training and broke his leg, so the backups (still very skilled players) will have to prove their mettle. Concerns have been raised that Huris may start behind other factions due to their lack of genetic and cybernetic enhancements, but hopes are high nonetheless.
Hide and Pounce: Never having competed in this sport before a few months ago, Huris' team is a definite underdog (pardon the pun) coming into these games. Training with Nekomi residents in Huris has gone well, and the team Huris is sending focuses more on the physical and tactical elements of the game, rather than the stealth, where outcompeting the Nekomi would be nearly impossible.
Tennis: Known as Judapom on Huris, the top 5 players and teams on the competitive circuit will be sent to compete.
Furian Football: Hurisian athletes have been competing on Fury for several years, and are considered to be one of the stronger teams, though still nowhere near the creators of the sport.
Baseball: While a rather uncommon sport on Huris, a team has been put together nonetheless, and is already on its way to Sol. It is one of the more low-ranked Hurisian teams, but it still has a decent chance of a medal finish given a little bit of fortune.
Basketball: While more common than Baseball, Basketball is a second-tier sport in terms of popularity on Huris. The Hurisian team has been selected from the best in the loosely-governed leagues on the planet. They hope that the fact that the average Hurisian is nearly two inches taller than the human average will provide an edge during the tournament at the games, which is shaping up to be a close one.
Football: Sharing similar popularity to Basketball, the Hurisian football team is unique in the sense that it is the one team kept intact from normal league play for the games. It is also the only team to have no Hurisians on it. They all hail from the world of Delta Pavonis. This team has been utterly dominant over all other clubs in the systems under Huris' administration, and altering the team may ruin the chemistry which has granted it 4 of the last 5 championship titles.
War Games: Huris has sent one of its elite military training divisions to take place in the mock-warfare on Sol. What is to be expected for the teams results remains unclear, as they have never fought against anyone other than themselves in training exercises. How they may react to the tactics of other nations, and vice versa, remains to be seen.
Megadeath Arena: With the announcement that this sport would be held in a nearly death-free environment has resulted in the formation of a patchwork team consisting mostly of social outcasts, the overly adventurous, and the slightly deranged. Fans of blood sports will watch this team with some excitement.
Kalian Dueling: Similarly to Megadeath Arena, a team of volunteers has been sent to take part in this unique event. Most are fairly unsure of what to expect, but have trained for many possibilities.
Solar Yachting: Huris has sent an A and B team for each of the events. This sport is uncommon in the sector these competitors come from, and good results, while possible, are not expected.
Uberathalon: Having a highly varied climate in which to train, many feel that Huris has a good chance to take multiple medals in this event. This sport is possibly the most anticipated sport along with Gyro-Hockey.
Biathlon: Like several other minor sports, the Biathlon team is selected from the leaders in Huris' competitive circuit. While skilled in the skiing portion, fears have been raised that the unaugmented athletes of Huris may have a disadvantage in the shooting portion.
Track and Field: Being a long-practiced sport on Huris, a full contingent has easily been gathered. The team is fit and skilled, but whether or not this will be enough remains to be seen.
Cross-Country Skiing: Much of the Biathlon team is also competing in the Cross-Country team. Huris is a favoured team, though there are several other contingents which have a good chance of beating its skiiers.
Freestyle Snowboarding: Being a very common and popular event on Huris, the competition was very tight to make it onto the team. Huris' 14-year old freestyle prodigy Jean Raymettis in particular is being watched with great excitement.
Ice Skating: Huris is sending both a racing and artistic team. The racing team is expected to be very successful, and the Caphian artistic skating duo of Mila Kameynis and Ayal Torquet is renowned throughout Huris and is expected to be highly successful.

No, this in not the update, sorry. I won't finish the update tonight unfortunately, I feel I'm getting more and more tired, and I would hate to rush it into something half-good. In particular with the many interesting and delicate events that will occur in this update. RL has taken too much time and energy yet again (and will continue to do so until Apr 6). Stats are done, bonuses are assigned, it's just the actual update text left. I'll be up early tomorrow to get it done. This of course means there's still time for a few more stories. ;)

I am just curious on how you plan to do the war games? On a computer simulation or will you take in battle orders and determine a victor after reading the orders?

From Strange to Stranger

“Oh great, I just REALLY WANTED this job….” –Li Zhaopeng

God… This job wasn’t the most enjoyable, but it sure had its perks. It was a lovely office with a great view of the ocean. What more could a mid-level bureaucrat ask for? There would have been no way back on Niu Yue that a mid-level bureaucrat would have such a lovely office. But of course back in Niu Yue most of the cheaper redevelopment had been completed already.

Jiao Xiu? It was virgin pristine land ripe for the taking. He loved it here, and looking back when he had first arrived, it was stupid of him to have regretted coming. It was a blessing in disguise in many ways actually. Here people didn’t really know about the scandal he had caused on the capital world, opportunity was open and people didn’t have a pre-designated opinion of him.

Almost two years had gone by and as much as he hated to admit it, the little bastard that was his brother had been right. He had saved enough money to buy land, a lot of land which could be opened up for development later on. Technically that wouldn’t be illegal since the land he bought was already rendered habitable by his official capacity. Of course, he had received several hints from the Governor and to immediately stop

It was something about making the administration seem bad and something else about, what was the word? Ah yes, legally sanctified corruption among the government officials through loopholes in the law. Did they really expect him to know all the laws? His skill was at redeveloping territory, not financial law. He was just 23! Most people would still be in college learning stuff that he had mastered when he was in his early teens.

Perhaps by being so smart he was attracting attention. Oh well, it was too late to worry about that even if he wanted to do something about it. There wasn’t a city, a country, a province, or a planet in the Ascendancy that didn’t know his name and his ah… scandalous affair with the Emperor’s niece. And there was no way he was leaving.

“Sir? What should we do in regard to Sections B4 - J2?”

Great, he really had to stop daydreaming when he was working. It was just so boring and how almost everyone of the people who worked under him KEPT ON COMING BACK ASKING FOR PERMISSION!!!

Gahh, he so wanted to retire and soon before he lost his mind.

Series One augmentation is composed of the Augmentation patterns the Nekomi managed to Retain intact during the Post scourge Years. Overall, they are quite simple, and there are no major Augmentations included in this category.
Cat ears: the simplest of the Audio enhancements, they are a pair of self contained hearing structures attached tot he top of the subjects skull, allowing them to hear more accurately and in a larger range then just normal human ears alone.
Cat eyes: but making this minor augmentation of the subjects eyes, it increases the subjects sensitivity during low light conditions.
canine Olfactory Centers: a purely internal minor augmentation, In increases the complexity of the subjects nose, allowing them to discern smells much better.
Cat Tail: increases the length of the subjects spinal structure into a tail proper. the cat tail is designed to help increase the subjects balance.
Claws: a simple Claw Structure, eather tailored to a sharp point, or a longer claw with a slightly serrated edge for cutting.

Series Two Augmentation came into Nekomi Circulation soon after they acquired the basics of human-computer interaction. at this point, the nekomi were able to recover the pattern files of 10 more augmentation, including 3 Major augmentations.
Minor:
Bunny Ears: similar tot he Cat ears of the Series one augmentation, they are longer, and are more sensitive at picking up distant noises. the trade off is a reduction of overall sensitivity compared to cat Ears.
Rabbit Tail: a small fluffy tail. purely cosmetic.
retractable claws: a retractable set of claws. while slightly smaller then normal Claws, they are indistinguishable from none augmented fingertips when retracted. Government permit is required to receive this augmentation.
Dog Ears: similar to cat ears and bunny ears, they enhance overall sensitivity to noises, at the trade off of decreased range.
Gills: a simple gill Structure. while not able to support a human indeffently underwater, as they are not quite able to purge carbon dioxide quite as efferently as lungs, they are able to extend a humans dive time to a little over 30 minutes.
Webbing: simple set of webbing extending between the subjects fingers and towers, enhancing the ease which the subject can swim.
Prehincile Toes: this this augmentation,t eh subject can manipulate objects with their toes as deftly as their fingers.
Major:
Otter Fur: A full Body Augmentation, altering the subject's skin to grow a soft, waterproof fur. for the most part, a cosmetic Augmentation, though the waterproofing fact of the fur is a big hit on Alpha Centuri, where is rains almost constantly.
neural Augmentation: the adaption and maximization of the subjects Nervous system, significantly enhancing his/her reaction time. it is a painful process that takes over a month to heal from, and an additional 2-4 months to train the subjects body to fully utilize the enhanced reactions.
muscular-density Augmentation: Muscular-density Augmentation increases the subjects Muscle density, significantly increasing the subjects Strength, and in some cases, his/her speed. Recovery time is similar to that of neural augmentation, a month to heal and 2-4 months to re-train his/her body to maximum effect.

Series three has yet to be released, with the technology to develop and produce completely new Augmentations recently developed. though it is still 2-3 more years until it will be completed, there are several open projects in the works concerning them.
Minor:
Air Bladder: a small, internal air bladder, significantly increasing the duration a person can hold his breath.
Spark Pouch: a small gland deigned to produce a small flame.
Basic Memory augmentation: more of a cybernetic augmentation, attaching a small computer to the base of the skull for increase ones memory.
Major:
Chitin: a hard, Exo-skeleton like skin. there are many combat possibilities to this, as well as several uses as a built in spacesuit. still in the proposal stages.
Heavy Fur: a heavy fur coat designed for cold weather conditions.

I've gathered some very simple statistics from the stats for your pleasure. Of course there are plenty of things that they don't take into account, so don't make too much of them. They're just for fun, mine and yours. And of course for trash talking each other. ;)
Spoiler calculations :

Productivity is calculated as (Production + Trade * 2/3 + Bank * 1/3) due to the more fickle nature of Trade over Production, and that the bank can be invested into more production.
Technology is calculated by assigning 0 points for tier-1 techs, 4 for tier-2 techs and 10 for tier-3 techs (base cost / 5).
Force is calculated by summing up the base costs of all units and dividing by 2.

Note that the sum is a pure brainchild, there is no real substance behind the weighting I've used other than that they were simple, and that I wanted the top numbers in each category at least somewhat close, but not over, 100. ;)
Right, let's have a second round of this, done by the players.

Year 8

After the last few years of hostilities, the galaxy returned to a state of peace. Diplomatic relations were rebuilt, negotiations and trades once more flourished and most everyone seemed at ease. The Confederacy of Kalia were perhaps the most active faction in this turn of events, first suggesting that peace be formally recognised as the prevalent state between all factions, and later taking the initiative to the first Interstellar Galactic Games to foster even better relations all throughout the galaxy.

Sol, the war-torn cradle of humanity, was chosen as the host of the first games, which undoubtably was a great help towards rebuilding trust in that system. As the U.S.C. first graciously suggesting Sol for the position, and then paying all expenses connected to the games, the people of Earth are becoming more and more appreciative of their new masters. The huge amounts of resources allocated to the rebuilding of Sol's productive capacity hasn't gone unnoticed either. Things are rapidly normalising in the previously turbulent system, and negotiations between the various factions on the planet have slowly begun. The trials of former government heads cast a slight shadow on the otherwise light picture though, as infected disputes and accusations of lies, deceit and abuse are brought forth. U.S.C. officials running the processes have a difficult time keeping the order, but all assembled foreign observers agree that everything has been fair and forthright, and that there is actually substance behind the claims that lead to the invasion.

(+lots to stability at Sol)

But looks can be deceiving, and underneath the surface of friendly faces and polite discussions tensions are never far away. The veritable race for the colonies continued with unabated pace, leading to several isolated incidents. The Nekomi who had raced to Cygni to claim it found themselves beaten yet again by another faction, this time the Emergents whose colony ship was already lowering its components to the surface of Cygni II.

Further away from the core, following the less than cordial greeting the Hurisian scout ship received at Blight, the Democrats decided to move some of its forces to Botein. It had been previously claimed by a scout setting up a command post, and the forces were sent to guard their perceived stellar domain. The arriving small fleet found itself facing an unescorted colonization endeavour by the Sword of Wrath. Fearing that its position close to the Wrathian homeworld would be untenable, and not wishing to risk a major incident without clear instructions from the military command, the Hurisian fleet stood back and watched the colonizers do their job, then continued to blockade the gate. A formal protest has been issued to Blight, but Democrat officials have little hope that the "apocalyptic maniacs" will be reasonable in this issue.

The highly hostile radioactive system Kruger, long since claimed and held by NAM forces, is clearly no paradise for would-be colonizers. The extremophile NAM still saw its uses and had long planned for a well-shielded colony to be set up. The NAM forces in the area were baffled to say the least when the Furians arrived and proceeded to set up their own colony despite the complaints by the local NAM fleet. The Furian colony ship was heavily escorted and the Norsk ships could do nothing but sit back and watch. Still, it is clear that the Furians have not really planned for this venture into the radiation and attempts at further redevelopment have proven extremely difficult since the radiation levels are outright dangerous to biological tissues. The Norsk on the other hand know exactly what they are doing, and even if redevelopment costs are soaring, the NAM colony at Kruger is growing.

Random mini-spotlight

Perhaps the most serious incident was also the most innocuous. The Magistracy of Capella and the Emergents of Providence had graciously agreed to peaceful coexistance at the Errai system. The Capellans had taken the lead, clearing out the left-over defense systems with difficulty and setting up a colony last year. The Emergents were scheduled to follow this year, the colony ship was in place, but then something went wrong. The Capellan Starship Incubus, limping from its wounds from battling the defense systems, was heading home towards the gate Capella as the Emergent colony ship approached. Records diverge as to exactly what happened, but it's clear that neither ship had much maneuverability to speak of, and for some reason it seems that the colony ship veered ever so slightly off its signalled course. The crash wasn't very serious as such things go, but enough to make the barely moving CSS Incubus give up its last breath, though most of the crew could be rescued from the wreckage. The Emergent colony ship on the other hand took a hit to the main propulsion system, and while not a very serious damage it would have to be repaired before colonization could be attempted. The confusion seems complete as Capellan officials switch between high-pitched formal complaints at the destruction of lives and property, and defensive claims that they had nothing to do with it, whatever "it" is...

My appologies for the lateness of the update, I hope you understand. For the next few weeks I'm afraid late updates will be the norm.

To those it may concern - hostile conditions on a planet make redevelopment harder and costlier, sometimes impossible without a good plan.

To the Furians
From NAM

We are somewhat confused by your settlement of Kruger, a system that has been claimed by the NAM for several years now in order to allow us to trade with the core network. It cannot be for resource aquision as there are two systems far less dangerous and more suited to your techical skills that are closer to your homeworld, and it is unlikly it is for trade as both Ross and Alphard are better placed for that. Thus our mystification remains...

If you wish to relocate your settlement to a more congenial system we would be happy to provide assistence and funding.

Sweet update. Just now for the tech pms.

In the heart of the Hurisian government complex, a fierce debate was taking place. One young senator was standing, addressing Autarch Minell, standing calmly in the center of the room.

"And what of the intrusion of Wrath into our space, Autarch? It is one thing for them to deny our scouts access to further space, but completely different for them to settle a world already claimed and defended by the Democratic Autarch of Huris!"

"Senator Kemel," responded the Autarch, "You are aware of the complaint sent to Wrath, are you not?"

"Of course I am aware of it. Don't patronize me. What I am also aware of is the fact that Wrath has acted very irrationally in a totally trivial matter. Do you honestly think that they will peacefully retreat from Botein?"

"We had only just established the colony a few months before their arrival. They may not even be aware of it yet. I will wait for their answer."

"Which will be negative. What then? Will you simply retreat?"

"If I can get assurances that they will go no further, Kemel, than I will be satisfied. Botein is not a particularly lush or profitable world-"

"But it is our world. Our claim rested on it first. We can't just bow to them. We must stand up for ourselves!"

"Stand up for ourselves and fight a fanatical enemy who is over two years of traveling away from our construction areas?"

"If necessary, yes."

"Senator, I do not believe that it is right to judge before a response has been received. Furthermore, I do not believe that violence is the answer. I do believe that negotiations will be possible. Wrath may be a nation of fanatics, but even a fanatic can see the logical options presented to him."

"You're an idealist, Autarch."

"And you are a warmonger, Senator."

"No, I am a believer in the integrity of our nation. If fighting is what is needed to maintain it, so be it."

"I will not see us send out our navy unless it is absolutely necessary."

"And what is that 'absolute'? Once they have pushed their way into all of our claims? These men are not logical, if past experiences provide any clue. It is clear to me that you will not make the stand this nation needs. So I will make this announcement: I, Senator Ryan Kemal, declare my intentions to run for the position of Autarch in the upcoming election. I will make a stand against these aggressors, and keep what belongs to Huris."

"Thank you, Senator Kemel." said Timas Minell dryly, "You may sit down."

Kemel did so, to mixed applause from the other Senators. One tapped him on the shoulder.

"I don't quite think that was prudent. Minell's been right about all of these situations before-"

"He's never had one like this before, and is bound to be wrong some time. If the Sword of Wrath yields, I'll be perfectly happy in having made a fool of myself. And if I am right, I will be the next Autarch. I'm sure of it."

To: Wrath
From: DAH

We firmly request that you leave Botein, which has already been claimed by the Democratic Autarchy of Huris, and already contains several of our defensive installations.

Negotiation is possible, if you wish.

To avoid further accidents, we would like to state that we are claiming the systems of Benalia, Altair, Chara, Alpha Centauri, Vega, Mira and Acrux.

Furthermore, note the following partial claims:
We suggest that Tsze Tseang should be jointly reclaimed with the Colonial Federation of Sezuren
We invite the Furians to settle with us at Cygni
We have already agreed to joint colonization of Errai with the Magistracy of Capella

OOC: Nylan, I think the games haven't happened yet, but are being prepared, due to travel times and the like. Athletes from Huris would spend three years getting there. ;) Let's see about developing faster transportation. Edit: wait, nvm, scratch this. TerrisH is doing so.

To the Democratic Autarchy of Huris,

The Sword of Wrath recognizes no claim upon the Misery [ex-Botein] system by the Democratic Autarchy of Huris or any of the other successor states or claimants to the legacies of Holy Terra. Cease your blockade of our colony immediately lest you stir the Crusade to direct its gaze upon thee.

In the interest of peace and to prevent any further misunderstandings, his Grace offers to dispatch unto you, a Paladin to represent his Grace in all future matters. Should you accept, this agent will be empowered to formalize our relationship if any on our behalf.

To the Democratic Autarchy of Huris,

No claim means no claim. Insofar as we can establish you placed your outpost on our world while we were in the process of colonizing it. We have made an offer to resolve this diplomatically, it is up to you to accept it.

No further communications will be made until we have an answer.

OOC: You had no outpost the previous turn, I had no colony the previous turn and this turn you have an outpost and I have a colony.

Anyone other than LordIggy can stay out of this conversation btw. This is between him and me.

Edit: As a second comment, it might be an idea to show claimed territories with the player faction information. As I have no public contact with anyone other than LordIggy (I might have contact with others, but I not telling :p ), and have no map beyond what has been revealed to me, I can't tell if I come to a system or not if it's been claimed other than by asking Niklas.

OOC: Nylan, I think the games haven't happened yet, but are being prepared, due to travel times and the like. Athletes from Huris would spend three years getting there. ;) Let's see about developing faster transportation.

Whatever happened to that holograph idea of yours? :p

Since most of us should have it by now (will check momentarily)...

EDIT: DAH and Colonials don't. They could trade for it this coming turn, or we'll just have to wait until their athletes get to the games I suppose...

I built the outpost and had a military presence there before your colony ship arrived.

Okay, I'll make a deal.

Wrath sends Huris 15 EP, and Huris withdraws from 'Misery', as you call it.
