That aside.

Kant truly was brilliant. He is the only philosopher, ever, to have developed a non-natural law system of ethics that's internally consistent and thoroughly justifiable through pure reason that simultaneously solved most of the epistemological dilemmas that plagued 18th century philosophers. If I weren't a subscriber to natural law myself, I would be a Kantian.

I suppose a lot of this is going to hang on what you define as a natural law theory. But there appears to be at least many modern philosophers (Hurley, for instance) who ascribe to non-natural law systems of ethics without being internally inconsistent. Concurrently the utilitarians aren't really natural law theorists, but if utilitarianism is false it is not because of internal inconsistency.

I encountered Kant as a young, impressionable freshman. I trudged through the Groundwork as all freshman philosophy students are required to do.

I think he had many great insights into ethics. Kant is exciting; he is intense; he makes bold, subtle, interesting claims. Some of those claims are even true. Unfortunately it was Kant who made really bad writing philosophically respectable. I am uncertain as to whether the benefits of the former outweigh the consequences of the latter.
