Oh, the weather outside is...

We've got a flood going on here. Both Piper Creek and Waskasoo Creek (Piper feeds into Waskasoo, which feeds into the Red Deer River) have gone well over their banks. A significant portion of the trail system next to the river is closed, and two entire parks are closed because they're partly underwater.

I'm in no danger here, as I live up on the north hill, across town from the area in the video below (43rd Street is in the southern part of downtown, in the valley below South Hill). Normally Piper and Waskasoo Creeks are quiet, unassuming creeks that meander here and there throughout the city and much of the land on both sides of them is designated as parks, as well as being part of the wildlife migration corridor that lets deer and moose have a safe way to travel from north to south and back.

This video was posted two days ago. I've just had an update from the City's news site:

City of Red Deer said:
Flood watch in effect for Waskasoo Creek
April 22, 2018 6:43 PM
(Red Deer, Alberta)
With rising waters across the city, Residents are asked to stay away from rivers, creeks and flooded areas after The Province issued a flood watch for the Waskasoo Creek earlier today.

Waskasoo Creek has exceeded capacity, overflowing its banks and causing flooding in some areas. Water levels are expected to continue to rise over the next few days.

The following parks are affected by flooding:

  • Barrett Park is closed, extending from Ross Street to Kinex Arena.
  • Rotary Park, including the playground and skate park, is closed.
  • Waskasoo Park has some localized flooding.
City crews continue to monitor conditions of parks and trails. Residents are reminded to obey posted signs and use extreme caution in the area.

The road closure at 43 Street remains in effect. Barricades were put up and detours are in place for motorists.

City crews will continue to monitor the situation and will provide updates as more information becomes available.

So I guess I'm not planning to go anywhere on the south side of the river any time soon. This would be a problem if I were still living in the valley. I'm still pretty close to the river, but it's not going to get high enough to be a significant issue here.

Grey skies, drizzle and cool temperatures. Guess summer's over and done with.

June Gloom has set in. That's when a marine layer settles in over the coastal areas plus pretty far inland and brings with it total cloud cover that doesn't dissipate until late in the afternoon. It lasts 1-3 months. I'm not a huge fan of not getting sunshine but it does keep temperatures comfortable. I also don't expect rain again until November.

I know. It's just what it's called but it usually runs from May through late July. It hasn't started up full-bore yet, we'll only get a few days of it alternating with clear skies. By July it'll be a daily phenomenon. It's kind of frustrating, especially since it produces little to no rain. I remember the first summer I came out here for work I complained how sunny California wasn't all that sunny and my co-workers had to explain what was going on.

A lot of places have local names for the seasons. Here we don't have spring. It's now mud season, accompanied by flooding. The next season is known as construction.

May starts next weekend, you know. :)

It looks like close to half the country had a top-10 coldest April on record.

We're into classic British weather. Which is to say that it's utterly unpredictable. On Monday, it was pouring down with pretty strong winds and low temperatures. Yesterday clear skies and sunny. Today, overcast with drizzle.

It's also been nasty and cold for the last few days. :(

Even Smokey seemed shocked that we got snow this late in the season:

And by this afternoon we're supposed to be pushing +25C.

Actually, he should be saying, "I was having a good hibernation. There's still snow on the ground. Did you really need to wake me up for THIS?"
