Oh, the weather outside is...

It has rained all day today with about a ninety-minute break.

And there’s AC everywhere here ;D
I would have killed to get AC in my room at the time. I was having tantrums and punching walls while shouting "[expletive] THE HEAT, WHEN THE [expletive] WILL THIS STOP ?!" and so on because I could never escape it, and spent a few nights not sleeping at all as I was drenching the bed while waiting for the temperature to become bearable (and it didn't).
Yeah, it was REALLY Hell.

Have you tried a swamp cooler? They don't work super well, but they're better than nothing.

They only work in dry climates. Ceiling fans can be very effective.

The smoke has cleared out most of the way here today. Now, the air quality is moderate and temperature is hot.

For days now, it's been windy, not balmy tropical breezes, but nasty nasty wlnd with tattoos and nose rings.

Yesterday, the parents of a friend of mine were coming back from the US. She went to the airport in Cebu and accompanied them back on the ferry. We met them at the dock to give them a ride the rest of the way home. As the ship pulled up to the dock, an onos wind roared in. We hid out for the 15 minutes it took to pass. Man, instant mini-typhoon. :scared:

Okay, wind is definitely weird in your part of the planet.

It's been windy here, too. Not bad wind storms, usually, but enough to knock the power out a time or two.

We had the first frost warning a couple of days ago. With the snow in Canmore, winter just might come a bit early this year.

At least they got the parking lot done now (and it looks pretty snazzy; I'll have to see what it's like to walk on).

I don't think I could stand to live in a place that gets frosts so early in the fall. We probably won't see that for another 7-9 weeks, and it hasn't drop'd below 15°C here since May. I wouldn't mind more October frosts, tho.

We get the first snow/first frost early some years. :dunno: What that means is a brief cold snap, but there are benefits. Some fruit sweetens up after a frost, and that cool nip in the air is invigorating - particularly after the smoky summer we've had here, courtesy of the BC forest fires.

Altitude makes a difference, too. I'm not too far from the foothills of the Rockies, so a September frost or even snow isn't a big deal. It doesn't stay, though. The first real snow that stays doesn't come until October at the earliest, more likely in November.

I've seen some nasty weather in September, though. There was a blizzard one Labor Day weekend, and I remember when we decided to have an SCA demo of fighting and dancing in one of the city parks. We figured we could tough it out, but the sleet finally made us decide to invite ourselves over to the home of one of the local members who hadn't come along - she was packing to move. We just phoned her and said, "We got sleeted out, we're freezing, and are inviting ourselves over for supper. We're bringing the food."

So we had an impromptu medieval feast on her living room floor - complete with costumes and period dishes.

It's disgustingly hot. Spending a week in San Francisco has made me way less tolerant of DC's weather. Hopefully the summer heat will break soon and we'll have some nice fall weather.

I don't know. :dubious: Hurricane Florence is now a cat-4 and approaching Bermuda. After that, one possible track swings it north and passed Newfoundland. The other possible track aims it right at you. :run:

This doesn't jive with what I'm seeing on Wunderground - they're listing it as a category 2.
And here is the ensemble of track forecasts:
https://www.wunderground.com/hurricane/atlantic/2018/hurricane-florence?map=ensemble

One of them does indeed have it go almost right over the District, but we're far enough inland that I'm not too worried. Some rain would actually be a marked improvement over current conditions (94F "feels like" 100F), the only problem is the ground is probably still a little too saturated from all the rain we've already had.

Dude two days it rained for three hours, flooded the dry canal in front of my apt onto the driveway and yard almost to the bottom step of my stoop. If we have major hurricanes this year I'm boned. Send help.

You're right, Lexicus. Since I saw the Cat-4 story, wind sheer has knocked it down to a Cat-2. :whew:

(CNN)Hurricane Florence has weakened some but will likely strengthen again into a major hurricane and could threaten the US East Coast by next week.

On Wednesday, Florence became the first major hurricane of the 2018 Atlantic season, with maximum sustained winds peaking at 130 mph, making it a Category 4 hurricane, according to the National Hurricane Center.
Track the storm

A satellite image shows Hurricane Florence in the open Atlantic on Thursday morning.
Increased wind shear over the open Atlantic, where the hurricane is currently located more than 1,700 miles from the East Coast, has weakened Florence to a Category 2 storm, with 105-mph winds as of 11 am Thursday.
But that wind shear will lessen over the weekend, and Florence should regain major hurricane intensity (Category 3 or greater) by early next week -- as the storm moves northwest, getting closer to the US coastline by the day.
It's too early to tell if the storm will make landfall somewhere on the East Coast, or if it will turn harmlessly back to sea.

Almost 7 inches.

That's interesting. IIRC according to Wunderground it was a Cat 3 at one point but they didn't say it was Cat 4. I have no idea what would explain the disparity.

Y'all are pretty far from the Gulf; I think you just need to worry about the seasonal rains, not hurricanes.

We didn't stay in bed for those snaps in the summer, the warm cushony goodness is too damn hot. Pillow on the floor, as low as you can get, make a breeze with a fan, find some light cotton wifebeaters and tighty-whities to help keep dry. It doesn't make it cool, but it helps make it sleepable.
