Oh, the weather outside is...

Sunny and almost 60 today.

I never count spring as having officially sprung until June 1 (because of that May 29 blizzard we had nearly 33 years ago).

The snow mountain is still there in front of my window. It's melted a little, but not much.

When do you consider summer, fall, and winter to start?

Summer starts when it's always warm, the spring mud is gone, and the drinking water is drinkable (spring breakup - when the ice on the river melts and we get lots of detritus from upriver - means the water tastes disgusting, although we're assured it's perfectly safe). Also when the mosquitoes come back.

Fall starts when the leaves begin to turn (in mid-August).

Winter comes when the first snow comes and stays more than a day. Winter came in late August/early September last year (it was a brief fall). We had snow from September to present (in other words, I don't care what the calendar says, it's still not spring; there's time for another snow storm).

Note that these definitions are my own and based on local conditions. They have some degree of overlap. But our normal seasons are winter, mud/tree fluff, mosquitoes/construction/too hot, and fall.

My favorite time of year is fall (September/October). The days are warm, the trees are a variety of gorgeous colors, most of the mosquitoes are gone, and I love the smell of ripe crabapples and dead leaves (one of the smells of home; I miss it). There's a bit of a nip in the morning air that makes me more alert and mentally energized.

So, your spring and summer are both crowded into June, July and August?

Yes. And don't forget that fall starts in August in this region.*

Except for 1986, when we still had snow in June (due to the blizzard in May, we were still clearing snow away in mid-June). And there was one year when we were still getting temperatures in the 30s in September; it's insane that in mid-September I had to spend my days in an air-conditioned mall because my own apartment was like a sauna; I put the cats' food and water in the coolest, darkest part of the suite and had to leave.

*Yes, I do understand the concept of equinoxes and solstices, but the climate in this part of the world doesn't necessarily match what the calendar tells us is supposed to happen.

It's been foggy all day. Thank goodness it's just fog and not smoke. Yes, there have been some years with so little snow over winter that the fire index warnings came out in February and haze like this could be smoke rather than fog.

Environment Canada says it might snow tonight.

It's been pretty much endless summer in here...With strong winds that help keep the temperature down a bit...I can't honestly not remember the last time it rained here, which is of course a problem for farmers. But the rainy season should start soon, at least within the next month or so...

Rain and more rain on the horizon is seems. Would be great if we could get a nice sunny april. May and June can be crappy for all I care, nothing to do outside at that time anyway.

You could swim out and help all those folks trapped on the Viking sky!

Really? I feel like Norway would have nice weather that time of year, along with the long days they get up there.

Depends where you are in Norway. In the southern parts it can be really nice at that time of year. Up north there's usually plenty of snow that needs to be dealt with so going off read is usually a soggy mess as it's all melting away.

-5C, no wind, and clear blue skies - perfect early Spring weather in Northern New York, and a good excuse to get out and enjoy the Maple Festival with the wifey.

A meaningful rainstorm began last night & will continue for the next few days. Normally that would good, but I have to drive into Tag & I'm fearful of driving in the rain.

Into the 70s this week! Soon, breakfast on the patio. :)

28 C last week. 4 C this week. Brrrrr!

Almost hit 60 F one day last week, been between 30 and 50 everyday. Just one little 2 inch patch of ice on my yard remaining by the shed. Now I see snowflakes falling (trace amount).

Holy crap it's been snowing these last couple of weeks. I like snow but it's enough now.
