Oh, the weather outside is...

Sunny, about +2C, no wind, skiing was really good for December!

Rain! I can't believe the forecasts from last week were accurate. These guys don't seem to get rain calls right even 24 hours out so I'm pretty shocked. Supposed to rain all week.

Overcast!! WTH. We aren't supposed to have these kinds of days. It's cold too.

Tropical Storm Ursula passing north of us. We're under a Signal 2 warning; Signal 3 is typhoon.

Edit: Ursula just increased to typhoon strength, but we dropped off the list of affected areas. :whew:

Lol apparently we've gone from an area the size of Wales being burnt this fire season to an area the size of Costa Rica (2.5x Wales)

Isn't this just the low vegetation inner continent?

No it's bush, ie forest. Previous fires close to the magnitude in area tended to be grass fires out west. This is mostly national park land in the rugged tree dense mountain range that runs down the east coast.

The weather forecast changed within the space of 6 hours for a third time. First it was going to rain all morning and stop in the afternoon. Then it was going to not rain in the morning and pour in the afternoon. What we got was a cloudy morning after hard overnight rain and a semi-clear afternoon. I wouldn't really care except we keep changing our plans in reaction to the weather and have now given up for the day. :(

Why is it units of Wales that large distances are measured in? That rather implies that people already know how large Wales is.

We were getting quite the icing event in northern New York yesterday. On the way back south I could see some of the trees starting to succumb to the ice, and the hood of our Jeep was icing up as well.

Cold and sunny.

Tomorrow is predicted to be 46 C, which I think would equal the all-time record for where I am. There's also a large coast/inland variance, so forecasts for 'Sydney' (usually taken at Observatory Hill, one of the coolest places in the city) are significantly lower. I am only about 25km from the city centre, but it will only get to 35 C. There is typically a 5 C difference in summer, but 10+ C is fairly unusual.

I recall two previous days around this temperature. One was two years ago on a day I decided to go to the cricket. It was about 44 C at the ground, and the lack of a heat differential between the city and suburbs was unusual. It was pretty unbearable to sit in, just watching. Tomorrow it will likely only be about 36 C at the cricket.

The other day I recall had a reasonable differential between city and suburbs, but I'd unfortunately pre-planned to go to pretty much the hottest place in Sydney. It got up to about 47 C.

The worst thing about tomorrow's temperature may be how long it lasts. Often an afternoon change will come and blow the hot air away. Tomorrow it's currently predicted to still be 45 C at 5pm, and 37 C at 8pm.

I can't imagine temperatures like that.

The Bureau of Meteorology says it is currently (at 4:55pm) 46.8 C. It is not fun. I just brought my washing in from outside, and it feels freshly ironed.

Penrith (further west in Sydney) apparently hit 48.9 C, which I think is an all-time record.
