On a personal level, I'm a born pessimist. I presume that things are going to go badly, and I rarely seem to be disappointed.

On a wider sweep of history kind of scale though, I'm really optimistic. I still think that everything seems like it's going to hell, but I think that's how it's always appeared to be, and nostalgia just makes things seem like they used to be better.

In the literal sense? Not really. History is purposeless, it's not aimed at producing some particular ideal state. Additionally, looking at things on a sliding one dimensional scale of how modern they were is kind of silly.

As a semi-conscious bias against claims that civilization is about to collapse in a couple decades and in favor of claims that the future is going to be pretty cool? Yeah, I have my biases.

I'm generally a realist with a cynical streak. What's that one quote? Something like "When an ill wind blows, an optimist hopes for change, the pessimist complains, and the realist adjusts his sails."

The proverbial glass is neither half-full or half-empty, it's just a glass with some water in it. Useful if you're thirsty, need to nourish a plant, or put out a very small fire.
