PH06: One is the Loneliest Number!

Wow nice turns Karr. And Alex bites the dust. I am up in a lot of SG's but will definitely get to this late, late tonight or Monday sometime.

I've got some time today, Cosmichail. Wanna swap?

Are we allowed to eliminate Wang now that we've eliminated his partner? I thought we were to make each couple a single, like us? Or am I reading too much into the variant?

Sure frankcor go for it. I think you got the variant right too Frank.
So I'll play after you then since I am up in 4 SG's. Like wow man they all happen at once and on the weekend the worst time for me.

I played 10 turns:

Inherited turn (800 AD): I found Rome unhappy and building a Colosseum with 2 turns left. Whipping would solve the short term problem but give another red-faced citizen for 29 turns. I decided to let it ride out the 2 turns. I woke up the sleeping Great General and sent him to the front -- dang desk jockey. All the other cities looked okay, if not rather small. I decided to try to let them grow to their happiness cap, currently size 8.

I put together a Recon-In-Force team of some war elephants and axemen to escort a Catapult to the Korean capital to get it warmed up for the main force which required a little more healing in Sparta.

IBT: Isabella/Hannibal declared war on Hatshepsut/Huayna Capac -- most excellent!

Turn 1 (820 AD): We completed research on Compass and I chose to go for Priesthood next -- it's only 1 turn and we can use the temples for more happiness. Rome completed its Coloseum and is no longer unhappy. I was surely tested not to choose Stonehedge, Pyramids or Parthenon -- look at the year! But I picked a Catapult instead.

IBT: Catherine demanded that we cancel deals with Victoria. She was +4 pleased with us so I risked denying her. She went Cautious on us. I wondered if she'd consider helping a lonely guy out with his lonliness but I didn't broach the subject, fearing I might offend her with my needs. Instead, I traded Corn for 2 gold/turn with her -- that should make her pleased again soon.

Turn 2 (840 AD): Priesthood completed and I chose Monarchy next, again for happiness. Neapolis completed a Courthouse and started an archer -- Sparta needs a permanent garrison.

IBT: Hatty offered us Metal Casting and 40 gold in trade for Compass. I take it. That reminded me, I was supposed to check out what we could get for Compass.

Turn 3 (860 AD): First, I checked out our trades, starting at the bottom of the score table.

Huayna Capac had every tech we had, so I got 3 gold/turn for our excess fish.

Hannibal, as it turned out, was hungry for Compass:
(I lost the screen shot -- he offered Meditation, Monotheism and Monarchy)

I took the deal he offered and then got 5 Gold/turn for our excess crab.

We had nothing anyone else wanted so my trading round ended. But it strikes me as odd that we got 4 technologies that begin with an M for Compass -- things that make you go "hmmmmm."

Please admire the wisdom I showed in blocking the only road out of Seoul:
one12.jpg

It forced the Korean Horse Archer to climb the wooded hill to attempt a pillaging run. He became training fodder for our War Elephant.

The bombardment of Seoul began with a lone catapult; several more were moving up.

IBT: Isabella demanded that we declare war on Hatty. She was +2 Cautious with us, so I took another chance and refused. We dropped to +1.

Turn 4 (875 AD): Our victorious War Elephant took a Combat III promotion. He then looked like a good candidate for our Medic III Warlord. (Where the heck did that Great General go? I kicked his butt when he eventually showed up.)

Turn 5 (890 AD): Neapolis trained an Archer, started a Forge(15). I sent the Archer to Sparta. New Athens constructed a Courthouse, started a Forge(18).

The bombardment of Seoul continued:
one13.jpg

We pillaged Wang's horse pasture -- that might have eliminated his pillaging aspirations.

Turn 6 (905 AD): The citizens of Sparta finally quit their whining and went to work. They're starving badly so I had to crack the whip for a Courthouse -- more to come.

General Sleepy finally arrived at the front. We now have two Generals outside of Seoul: Hamilcar Barca and Jayavarman II.
one14.jpg

Unfortunately Jay Jr. (for short) didn't quite make it to Medic III -- that was a blunder on my part, failing to check the arithmetic prior to pulling the trigger.

IBT: This time it was Victoria demanding we cancel trades with Catherine. I refused. That put us Even/Steven with her.

Turn 7 (920 AD): Calendar completed and I chose Horseback Riding to enhance our pillaging effectiveness. We had limited mobility at the time. Rome completed a Catapult, started a Forge(18). Sparta constructed a Courthouse, I whipped a Library for the culture, fixing the starvation and unhappiness all at once.

Turn 8 (935 AD): Sparta constructed its Library, started a Forge(18).

Uh oh, looks like we were about to get a bit of pillaging done to us.
one15.jpg

Maybe Wang had another source of horses.

IBT: We lost the Goldmine at Sparta, along with its road.

Turn 9 (950 AD): Horseback Riding completed and I started on Civil Service.

The bombardment of Seoul was finally complete, so I sent in 2 CRI catapults; each withdrew after inflicting collateral damage. Here's the mess they made of the CGII/DrillI longbowmen inside the city:
one16.jpg

Next I sent in our Barrage I catapult who died while messing things up a bit more. Hamilcar went in next, killing a Longbowman without getting scratched. Kewl. Three more Praetorians did the mopping up:
one17.jpg

I rang Wang; here's the best he could offer.
one18.jpg

I decided to wait. I sent a force north to deal with the pillagers and sent a garrison into Seoul.

IBT: Oh great: look what came out of the desert. What the heck are Victoria and Asoka doing up there for fogbusting?
one21.jpg

And this message popped up.
one19.jpg

Not to mention, larger cities make for better whipping opportunities.

Turn 10 (965 AD): Cumae constructed a Forum, started a Forge(15).

Fortunately, we had an Axeman guarding a Cow Pasture on the road between Rome and Cumae -- I moved him up to deal with the desert Barbarian Swordsman.

Our force at Seoul has been split into 3 teams:

- Hamilcar is leading 3 Praetorians and a Catapult to Pyongyang.
- Jay Jr. is leading a War Elephant and Praetorian to Sparta to deal with pillagers.
- 2 Catapults and a Praetorian are healing in Seoul. Seoul could use an Archer to garrison it properly.

Our two galleys have been exploring:
one20.jpg

We've discovered Northern and Southern Russian and it looks like there's lots of territory between them. In the north, we see London, we see France (Carthage and Arabia, actually), we see Isabella's underpants (I shudder). In the southwest, that's a newly uncovered portion of Egypt.

What say we move the capital to Sparta or New Athens? And how about training a settler and garrison for that spice/corn/fish/horse resort between Rome and Neapolis. It's probably the best non-capital site on the map. We'd better hurry though -- Asoka is already sniffing around there with a Galley/Trireme pair. There's some War Weariness in nearby cities so maybe we can whip up a new city quick.

Here's The Save for Cosmichail. Have fun!

Thanks for the swap Frank and amusing turn. I haven't used that medic III yet but sounds like a good idea and very effective. I will get this today, (well it's 1:30am so like 2-3pm) now only up in 3 sg's but one of them was very long. Lots of war and diplomatic stuff.

So this is "I got it".

Well, we don't have a extreme number of units so warfare is quite manageable so far in this game. Of course, that's going to have to change as we move up the food chain. In the back of my mind, I realize we'll probably be fighting Catherine and Victoria when they have Cossacks and Redcoats, respectively and our Praetorians have long outlived their usefullness. But we're able to hold our own now with a relatively small army which is good because our economy is not all that strong. As long as we can continue to capture cities and pillage at our current rate, we're okay.

I was real concerned about my research choices -- that seems to be my strongest weakness (apologies to Wynonna Judd). I've been able to win at Monarch level only when I stopped following the same old path over and over again. But in this last turnset, I meandered between happiness and military technologies. Any criticism is always appreciated.

Not much battling done in this turn but we can’t make Wang vassal obviously without feudalism and researching CS. This turn was a getting caught up tech wise round. I normally do not lightbulb scientist with capitol without academy but we needed it to get caught up. Hope everybody agrees and maybe we should build Nat. Epic in Rome once we have Lit which we get during this turn.

Turn 1

Loose axe to barb sword but cat takes him out.
Our elephants take out Wang’s wang uh I mean axe/HA.

Also from Berserks01 once you go to war with a civ he will not capitulate if feudalism isn’t discovered before starting war. So we might have to leave him according to the variant however we have an option there too.

We also make the following trade with Hatty:

Civ4ScreenShot0096.jpg

Turn 2

Antium/Corinth starts an archer.

Turn 3-4

Having a nice nap…
(getting soldiers ready for that wack jobs city)

Turn 5

Worker get gold hooked up for Sparta after Wang sent his huge army after us.

Turn 6

Corinth starts a library and switch the gold to it for better production.

Turn 7

We get a GS and lightbulb Philo

Civ4ScreenShot0097.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0098.jpg

Turn 8

Ok we make some trades and get us somewhat caught up except for machinery.

Civ4ScreenShot0099.jpg

Civ4ScreenShot0103.jpg

As we can see Wang is not interested in capitulation.

Civ4ScreenShot0107.jpg

Sell the following to Hatty:

Civ4ScreenShot0108.jpg

We revolt to bureaucracy and Hereditary rule. Was thinking about theocracy but we have no religion. If we get Buddhism in any of our cities maybe join the Buddhist block.

Turn 9

Pyongyang is lightly defended and we can easily take it if we wish.

Turn 10

Anarchy over and we won’t be able to keep science at 90% unless we take some more cities or we can also sell philo to Hannibal and Isabella who won’t trade anything for it.

Wang will offer the following deal for peace. Should we take it? That’s up to the next player and there is a nice stack outside Pyongyang ready to go.

I think we can take the peace deal and then work like crazy to get our economy cooking. Leaving Wang so weak, it won't be long before another couple declares on him and eliminates him. That won't be a violation of the variant. But let's get that economy cooking.

Does anyone have any thoughts about moving the capital to a more central location? Or building that city west of Rome? It looks like a sweet spot.

Hmmm ... one more bombardment of Korean city and Wang should re-consider his "We are doing fine on our own".

I would shift palace but I won't shift it to sparta ... too far west. New Athens is the better choice. Of-course, we must take into consideration the commerce and hammers yield of the prospective capital candidates as well ... but without looking at the save, I can't say. Based on memory New Athens is a good location.

As to Karr's point of Sparta because we will have more cities to the west ... that is true, but there is also something known as the Forbidden Palace or even Versailles to take care of that.

I don't have access to the game so I can't check the cities, but I recall Sparta was a powerful city site but may be a little short on food. New Athens has plenty of food but not a lot of hammers. Of course, I'm doing this all from memory so it's likely I'm mistaken. I concur with GreyFox. Next player should compare the two and then make the choice. I think we'll be happy with either location -- Rome is on the eastern edge of Pangea and isn't a good site for our future empire's capital.

I don't think Wang will ever capitulate because we warred with him prior to us having Feudalism. We ran into that in Berserk's first Be My Vassall SG game.

New Athens does seem to be the best city if we do that Palace replacement. It does indeed not have too many hammers but it's rich on food/commerce.

Something tells me too that he won't capitulate so I too think we should take the deal even though that's a nice city and very lightly defended. Ok also what's with the AI out teching us? We need to research what they don't have to make trades to keep up now. I did go for machinery to get us the maces but do we need them? I do like the crossbows and not much of a Roman player but wouldn't crossbow/Praets/cats be a deadly combination.

great turns all ~ one question, though, frank ~ how could wang offer us Horseback if we just discovered it a turn or 2 before? :crazyeye:

This one's on my list :D Got it.

You've got a point, Cosmichail. I haven't played the Romans much but it seems we could skip Maces and go for Gunpowder before upgrading units.

One more good city can't hurt us any. Is that Wang's last city? If not, let's take it then leave him out to dry until an AI team decides to dogpile on him.
