But they are acting like it.

Perhaps I'm just giving them too much credit for not seeing how idiotic it would be for a genuine progressive to think like that.

Well that would be because I'm not a progress liberal, I'm a socialist-lite.

Or what harder socialists would call - a liberal.

And none of them come close to being anywhere near as hateful, criminal or dangerous as Trump.
One of the goals I "want to see achieved" is a public for whom repetition no longer serves in place of evidence, at least on serious or complicated topics.

You'll be voting Biden, then, so as to remove the evidence-resistant sloganeer-in-chief.

Good to know.

:goodjob:

Given Tristan's penchant for repeating Trumpisms without evidence in a transparent attempt to extend Big Donny Dump's influence on serious or complicated topics, I'm guessing you're wrong here.

I mean, it's pretty basic.

The problems with previous democratic candidates and presidents are well known and well publicised.

And none of them come close to being anywhere near as hateful, criminal or dangerous as Trump.

Attempts to say otherwise from Trump supporters who own it - fair enough, he's your man and supports the goals you want to see achieved. I won't ever agree with you, but I can respect you for being straight about it.

The ones who pretend to be progressives are just pathetic, though.

You seem very much in the "if you're not with us, you're against us," line of thinking. Just like a certain Senator from the 1950's named Joe McCarthy.

I'm trying to give people some credit here.

:jesus:

You are newly returned so I figured I'd help by pointing out the known lost causes...but carry on! 'Tis a far nobler thing you do than what the jaded are capable of...and all that. :)

Speaking of lost causes @Winston Hughes it's almost certainly best not to bother engaging with the vociferous Canadian in regards to USian politics. He takes such an expansive view that it gets a lot closer to history than current events almost immediately so there is no practical value to be found.

Since I have never seen Americans shy away from expressing their opinions vociferously on how other countries should be run (including, I'm pretty sure you in past posts), usually with far less knowledge or information of what they're talking about that my own knowledge of American affairs, you're incendiary hypocrisy only makes you look the fool - certainly no higher ground at all.

The two people you have accused of being Trump supporters are actually not Trump supporters in any way, shape, or form.
Sad part is nobody has accused me of anything yet!

Good part is I don’t need to goose this thread with more phony updates. So all phony updates from here on out will be for my and your amusement alone.

Fortunately, I never strive for "higher ground." I'm more of a player for "common ground."

You're...you're...AMADEUS!!!!

You stand accused.

Feel better?

Is this irony or the current operating level of self-awareness?

Here's the thing...

I like Bernie Sanders. Always have. The comparison with my country's own idol of the left - Jeremy Corbyn - is instructive. Corbyn is an incompetent buffoon. Sanders, by contrast, is a serious thinker on policy and a brilliant player of the political game. At another time, he might have made a great president. As it is, he's probably not going to get the chance.

But, like Corbyn, what he has managed to do is to energise people on the left - especially younger people - to get involved in politics. Where the prospects are much better for Sanders' legacy, however, is that his party can still win the election, and get a government into power that knows that progressive and socialist ideas have a significant level of popular support. If they continue to play it smart, Bernie and the people who support him can still wield significant influence here.

But not if Trump wins. If that happens, you've got another four years of the USA being made safe for nativist and reactionary populism. More racism. More misogyny. More overt criminality in office. More gerrymandering and vote suppression. The continual undermining of the rule of law will move on apace, with the rights of women, minorities, immigrants, and anyone who gets in Trump's way crushed mercilessly underfoot.

Anyone who thinks four years of that is worth it just so you don't have to hold your nose while voting (as I did for Corbyn) can, quite frankly, do one.

I feel like half the progressive posters think Biden is functionally the same as Trump even if they differ in tone. It's very frustrating because I see where there coming form and Biden's got a ton of skeletons in his closet. But none of them come close to the damage Trump has done, is doing and will do.

But at the same time, Biden should be held to account! It's tricky because I don't know how to circle the square of getting people pissed off at Biden for legit reasons to vote for him to stop Trump from being worse.
