Poor dog mauls boy, please don't kill it :(

I would just like to ask who thought it was a good idea to have the boy take a bone away from a dog?

Did he? Well, I didn't know that. Taking a bone off a pit bull is a big mistake. Even my sister's little lap dog would be outraged, though there's little it could do about it.

Dogs love bones so much who could be so cruel as to take one away?

I need to know more background, children are stupid and if the child went and deliberately agitated a normally peaceful sweet dog I would support the dog not being killed over it. Im not saying that's what happened here, but as a general rule when a dog attacks a child I kind of want to know what set off the attack before i think the dog should go down.

It's a stupid idea. Tragic for the boy. Tragic for the dog. Unfortunately, as anyone who's ever bothered to work with shepherding animals would tell you, instead of people who keep house pets, sooooo kquooot fluffy fuzzy wuzzy, is that once a dog has attacked a particular species it is more likely that it's going to do so again. Now, since the dog appeared to be protecting a food source instead of attempting to eat the boy with a predation response, that repeat behavior isn't guaranteed, but it's still more likely. And given how dangerous a dog with a hair trigger is when it's prone and proven to be willing to attack human children there is only one responsible course of action. Destroy the dog. You aren't supposed to feel good about it. If you don't feel bad about it, that's kinda scary.

Ok read the full story, picking up a bone isnt a bad enough sin that it justifies cutting the dog a break. Read somewhere else this dog has killed another dog in the past. There is a time and a place to stand up for a dog, this isnt that time.

I met a woman walking a pit bull the other day. A very lively animal it was too. "She'll probably bite you," said the owner (or did my ears deceive me, and was it the dog that spoke?). "But don't worry, she's only playing".

Which was, you know, fine. I just laughed and shoved my hand into the dog's mouth all the harder. The dog seemed very pleased.

It turns out the 4-year-old boy ostensibly walked up and tried to take the bone from the dog's mouth.

The dog's owner also "surrendered him and doesn't want him back".

Especially chained dogs and children who haven't been told the basic facts about pets.

The only thing that will stop a bad person with a pitbull is a good person with a pitbull.

And when the dog does it again? Possibly killing a baby. What will you say then?

It is, of course, not the dog's fault. But the owner's. Yet the question remains what to do with the dog.

Kill the owner, re-educate the dog.

People show more compassion for animals than humans. I honestly don't get that.

Eh? None of that is happening here, you're making stuff up.

I see people showing compassion for an animal, I don't see anyone comparing the dog's life to the child's directly.

there should be regulation for owning this kind of dog

Why?

Maybe there should be a regulation on what sort of person is able to own a dog instead.

There's regulation about owning other kinds of dangerous animals. Or there should be.

Why not about dangerous breeds of dog?

Dogs are admirable animals in every way. But some, in fact many, breeds are simply not suitable as house pets where there are small children.

Any medium or large sized dog can be dangerous if not properly disciplined or handled. Pit Bulls are very very territorial. They will happily greet you, but unless there owner is around I wouldn't get to close to the gate or front door. Obviously this dog had a bad owner. Dobermans and Rotwielers are just big babies unless there owners train them to be aggressive. Same with Pit Bulls. Other Breeds you wouldn't be inclined to associate with aggression are more prone to it than breeds people to associate with aggression.

You don't let kids near pit bulls. If you have a pit bull, you damn well better keep it away from kids. I say, kill the dog as a lesson to other pit bull owners to keep their dogs under control. Yeah it's sad to put down an innocent puppy-wuppy but those things are dangerous.

Not all pit bulls are mean and vicious. But the ones chained up in yards and apparently left alone that way typically are.

What I don't understand is why the kid's parents hadn't already made it perfectly clear to not get anywhere near the dog.

A proper Spartan child would have mauled the dog and ate it. Throw the child to the rocks and enlist the dog.

Even the Agoge does not begin at 4 years of age :(

A 4-year old is not likely to know much about dog breeds anyway. And dogs who are prone to attack are even more prone to attack a small child than a larger child (and very rarely a grown-up).

I have read that the pitbull is not really such a dangerous breed to own and that the problem lies more with the owners than with the dogs.

Any dog can be taught to properly behave. Conversely, the larger ones can also be taught to be vicious killers.
