Postcounts: To to or not to be?

Interesting to see all you pro-postcount posters now that postcounts are hidden from posts.

Personally I am indifferent. But since I have turned postcount off for now, I will leave it off for a few weeks. This is meant as a test. Let's see if you guys still feel so strongly about it after that.

As I said in the other thread, one thing I am looking at is make it so people with over 5000+ posts are shown as 5000+ instead of the actual postcount. Another possibility is use little star ranks (now that mods don't use stars anymore).

Keep in mind lots of forums out there do NOT show postcounts in threads. If I remember correctly, postcounts were hidden here on CFC for a while too.

exactly! And I think most people are more lenient and even more willing to help someone who they see is a newb.

Oh and TF, I think awarding stars for high postcounts would promote elitism and spamming much more than visible PCs ever would, even more so than the standard titles you were considering. Everybody would start posting all over the place to earn those stars, because they would feel like they held a higher rank than the rest of us.

site feedback is a cul-de-sac that very few people ever venture in. if you want to get good gauges on what your citizenry want, your going to have bring the polls ot the poeple- not expect the people to coem to you, when they dont know where to go, or even what issues are up for debate to give them reason to coem here in the first place.

this WILL bring eliteism, thier is no question what so ever in my mind over this, a divine Irony, as a hing point argument for eliminating post count was that it woudl stamp out an eliteist problem that diodnt exist anywhere but in the minds of those who wanted it as a reason to get rid of visible post counts.

that CFC did show post counts was one fo its many charms over the other forums out thiere. that they are gone just brings CFC close to being "just another web forum for a game" with a little more of what makes it fine and more unique amoungst other forums gone.

I lik the PC being shown. It may be a meaningless statistic, but I enjoy it. I want to be able to see how many posts I, and others, have without going into UserCP.

Showing post counts is what makes CFC special? No, I'd say that is the content and the actual members, not the #s next to someone's name.

I don't really mind either way, but i do think that if you remove them then you should change the avarta rule to somthing higher, like 250 or 500. just so we know who is new. Also a bad thing about the removal of post counts it means a end to "Welcome to Civfanatics"

Well Thunderfall, if all those who wants post counts back are necessarily spammers... then it means 66% of posters would be spammers.

Generally speaking, you know at least as much as me that a forum where two thirds of posters are spammers is a junk forum. I wouldn't consider CFC this way.

I really would like the post counts back too. I've grown completly used to it and I think they are very usefull, at least in the C&C forum.

And this is the first time I've ever been to the Site Feedback forum before because its the first time I've had anything to object to.

I love the postcount, location, rank (i.e. chieftain, king, etc.) and join date.

I think it adds to the atmosphere. I use these things only for peacefull purposes.

Honnestly, how could you use these things for something else than peaceful purposes ?

If it's about disrespecting newbies, something utterly stupid, I fear that removing post counts wouldn't solve the issue... you would have to remove join date then. However, the forum rules which forbids personal attacks are more efficient than removing all statistics about posters anyway.

And really, if people would judge posters according to something on the left column of posts, it would be the location and the avatar, certainly not the post counts.

a few weeks? wow, that's longer than I expected. Any insight as to how you'll decide? a conference of the moderators? unilateral decision? Amount of total posts? Amount of reported posts? Amount of bans? just feelings?

what can we do?
