Pre-KalNes: A SysNes Successor

Race Name: Cora.

The Coran race is a result of a later experiment at achieving social harmony by extensive usage of data networks and cybernetic implants to achieve what one technocrat called was a “perfect society.” Tens of thousands of kidnapees volunteers were moved to a facility on a planet on the fringe of the galaxy, fitted with various cybernetic implants, and let loose. The volunteers went mad and killed each other within weeks.

Undeterred, the Technocrat went straight to his second experiment. Believing that the forced rapid implementation of the network on the volunteers lay at the heart of the problem, he restructured the program so that it actually used volunteers in a way that he deemed would lessen the impact of the implementation of the network. In addition, he gave the volunteers the ability to switch off their network receptors why the hell he did not think of that the first time we cannot fathom .

The experiment was a success. Soon, the Coran race erected massive cities and began to build massive networks that spanned from systems to systems. Immigrants even came from residents of the core world. They developed their own unique culture of perfect democracy based on massive interstellar social network. Then the tumult came and promptly wiped them all out.

Or at least almost wipe them all out. There still existed one colony of Corans, so backwards that they still used light speed transmissions and fiber optics cable, which survived. Confused and disoriented from the effects of the tumult and sudden silence of the galaxy around them, it remains to be seen how this community would fare.

Physiology: Because of all the cybernetic implants available, it would be a folly to truly determine what a Coran looks like. One may still be mostly human while others would be more machine than man. A trait common to all Corans, however, is the network receptor and the Coran eye. The Coran eye is an interesting little device that enables the wearers to actually *see* the network, much like HUD devices. In this way, Corans are able to instantly identify people by their name and even see advertisements from a local network provider.

Baryad

Remnants of the Technocracts, the Baryad once considered themselves the bastion of civilization in the outer rim. In times past they compromised a ‘colonial outpost’ with orders to bring the light of civilization to the outworlds. Then came the Tumult.

For the Baryad, the Tumult came at a moment of perfect coincidence or serendipity. For as the pulsars overtook the Baryad planets, they were observing an eleven hour period of silence and quiet contemplation to commemorate the memory of the 3rd Fleet, lost in an ambush to the Driva warlords in an attempt to bring them the benevolent tyranny of the technocracy. And so the Baryad colonial government had ordered power to be turned off at all but the most necessary stations (like hospitals, etc). As such, when the gravity wave overtakes the Baryad planets, much of the technology in use is little more then, at that precise moment, exotically crafted metalware- no more 'high-technology' then a spoon. That is not to say that the there were not massive explosions throughout the planets as illicit generators powered personal electronic devices and water purification, heating, and life-support systems underwent complete matter to energy conversions unleashing not only a massive primary explosion but causing multiple secondary explosions and fires.

But, importantly, the Baryad were saved. Their moment of silent recognition of their ancestors had brought them salvation. Many considered it direct intervention by the souls of their ancestors. Others considered it merely coincidence.

Regardless, a new religion was born, called 3F, after the intervention of the spirits of the 3rd fleet in saving the rest of the Baryad.

But what would the people do now? They knew that the Tumult had made contact with the Technocrat government of the core impossible... that they were in all probability they were all dead. And they were no longer interested in bringing the values of the Technocracy to the outer-worlds. The Baryad people, already traditionalist in outlook, began to look inward more and more... leaving the civilizations of the outer-worlds to their own ways while they redefined themselves as servants to the will of their ancestors. A change was coming to the people, a spiritualism. And as the technocratic government looked on in fear the once unified people began to splinter as thousands of small ancestor-worshipping sects began to flourish. Although it was a troublesome time for the government, much of the modern Baryad cultural and social development can be traced to this time. The practice of leaving a place at the table for one’s ancestors to eat with the family can be traced to this time. The decoration of crypts and the grand parades and festivities celebrating dead ancestors all come from this time.

But the remnants of the colonial government could not simply allow their society or more importantly, the control they exerted over that society to simply disappear. But neither could they outlaw or persecute a religion that had grown so vastly popular and had the overwhelming support of not only the people but many members of the government. The solution was to standardize the faith. And so the government approached one of the more moderate and traditionalists sects of the 3F faith and cut a deal. They would support that particular sect and try to standardize it for the people and in exchange the sect would recognize the authority of the remaining colonial government.

With the alliance between the government authority and the powerful church, much of the population, inherently loyal by genetic design, quickly fell into line but remnants of rebel faiths continued to operate throughout the territories. It was time for the second stage of the plan by the Church and Government to regain control of the population. They developed the ‘crêche’ system. And so they enacted measures, measures many considered at the time draconian, justifying them as a response to the tumult and nothing to do with the wide-spread rebel cults

According to the ‘crêche’ system, when families bore children, those children were taken by the state-sponsored Church and raised in massive academies where their interests, education, social values could all be imprinted and standardized from an early age. The stamp of the government and THE 3F faith could be imprinted on each child. A new hegemony arose, one that was very much traditional and conservative, reactionary to the newest and most revolutionary forms of the 3F religion. And as a side-effect, the population ballooned. After some initial problems, parents grew proud to provide children to the academies and without the cost in finances or time to raise children, they could soon produce more then ever before.

The population soared and the hegemony was cemented. The government is religious but ultimately secular. The 3F faith serves to guide and motivate the people but does not dictate to them. This faith takes the form of a strong ethic and sense of honor so that people will not disappoint their ancestors (sort of like ancient Confucianism in imperial china). Additionally prayers and sacrifices on the holy days celebrate the deeds and lives of the dead.

Baryad culture is strong and they take great pride in their social development; many very popular Baryads are known for their musical or theatrical proficiency.

Basically: Old school traditionalists with a strong religion-based sense of duty and obligation to their ancestors.

Heraldry, Colors, Ship-Design
Spoiler :

The Baryad consider the 3rd fleet sacred and have modeled their heraldry after that now extinguished arm of their armada.

Navy-Third-Fleet.gif

The Baryad adopt rust red ochre and black as their colors. Their ships are typically formed of concave lines full of points and edges.

Traits:
Spoiler :

3 - Ascetic: -1 Social stress, decreased food consumptions. -> the 3F warns that another Tumult may be on its way anytime and it is now time to prepare one's soul for that day.

2 - Gregarious: people will move to large cities, -2 Social stress from cities

5- Crêche: Greatly increased (double?) growth rate. (this is a new trait used to represent the effects of having the state raise the population’s children- its expensive- 5 points, so I hope it is appropriately powerful; i hope you will allow it).

If I cannot have the Crêche trait, please use the following instead for those five points

2 - Conservative: people are less mobile, increased growth from pleasent conditions -> i wanted faster growth and this seems to be the only way to get it in the absence of a true Creche trait. So, obviously this is from having the state system raise children.

3 - Efficent: decreased upkeep and consumption, building construction costs -5%es -> Crêche system instills a disdain of waste.

Eh, well the idea I had planned to forge ahead with is extremely similar to to Seon's (Cyberorganized enhancements, utopian society), as were the traits (I would've used Industrious over Data Traders), but I also liked the idea and don't particularly feel like starting over.

Carolis
The Carolis have such ancient origins that even their Legends are just retellings of even older legends. A few of the most known ones make reference to an ancient nation called "Use". No one knows whether it was actually "Use" or "USE". However it may be, it is nonetheless a sign that they come from Earth That Was, the fabled Capital of Humanity from the First and Second Age, and not only that, but that they came from it from before Earth was the capital of the Solar Federation.

Leaving those origins away, for any that ever met them it would be clear that, if there was something all of them treasured was knowledge. But not only knowledge of the kind that allowed you to investigate and get more knowledge. Oh, no! They also had much knowledge over practical matters, such as mining or farming, basic skills that, in these hard times, were incredibly useful. With nearly 60% of the population being what some call "jack-of-all-trades", it was pretty useful for the society, for that 60% could fare very well in any role, and thus fulfill nearly any job given to them by the government.

The recent downfall of society due to the galaxy-sweeping gravity wave had struck hard at the Carolis people, but they were very hard workers, and willing to do anything required to face the challenge presented to them with the death of so many people in planets near theirs. It was now up to them, the Carolis, to find survivors, to expand into other planets, and to help Humanity recover from this last, most painful strike!

The Hegemony of the Sinai

What is power? Is it the simple might of the marshalling of vast fleets and armies to crush one’s foes? Is it the power to destroy another civilization with the simple shift in numbers? Or is it the ability to analyze events in such a clear manner that they can be predicted with some accuracy?

A group of technocrats, having fled the Core in some long-forgotten dispute over dogma, fled to the Outer regions in order to implement their beliefs. On the planet they dubbed Sinai, the exiled technocrats landed and quickly seized control of the planet and its inhabitants. There, they indoctrinated a society of beings whom would be able to see the essence of how they saw power: the natural by-product of a wealthy and educated society not afraid to exert its influence upon others. The Varanasi (of the same genome as the fleeing technocrats but simply the descendants of the original inhabitants of Sinai) would be the target of their theoretical implementations.

The descendants of the original technocrats, the Bonpati (descendants of the original technocrats and those Varanasi found worthy), ruled as an elite class over the majority of the Varanasi. Those individual Varanasi found worthy of the Bonpatian ideals would be offered marriage into the Bonpati clans and membership within the elite. And for a long time, the Bonpati bided their time as they feared that the Core words might one day come to Sinai to punish them for their transgressions. Now that time of fear has long passed, and while the Bonpati have long lost their technology over time and their small numbers do not inspire much confidence, they have not lost the traits that once instilled fear into the hearts of the Technocratic Core in the ancient past. As ever, the Bonpati remain driven to succeed beyond expectations. Beneath them, the Varanasi, watch and learn from the Bonpati. Servants and students of the Bonpati for now, they too have aspirations of one day becoming more Bonpati than the Bonpati. But until then, they watch as their society is led into the new times by their recognized superiors.

Oh right.

Cora Color: Aqua.

Coran Values: Survival and Knowledge

Coran Ship Aesthetics: Shape shaped. Literally. The Corans often build their ships with regular shapes fomed by geometry. There are, for example, disc shaped ships, pentagon shaped ships, tetrahedron shaped ships, hexagon shaped ships, sphere shaped ships, and even cube based ships.

To this day, Corans can't help but shake the feeling that there is something wrong with their cube based designs.

Ship Design: Orientation toward "nose", distinct lack of curves, compact

DOSSIER: Likely the descendants of an old Technocrat faction which made a run at core world hegemony during the Kingdom Age, only to be rebuffed and exiled to exterior worlds. Culture is tinged with revanchist sentiment toward the galaxy at large and rather minimalist material aspiration beyond lust for extrasystem power. Distinct lack of dogma involving moralist or religious codes, or any other technological aspirations beyond those redevelopment and reverse engineering of formerly lost technologies from pre-Tumult times. Generally utilitarian motivated society as a whole. Genetic code is rather heterogeneous when compared to other fringe world populations, likely due to rather recent societal establishment and previous association with the heterogeneous and now lost core worlds. Fixed superiority complex with regard to other fringe system occupants.

Notes: Tried to avoid fleshing out too much before I know what system I'm rolling.

The K

The K, though they appear completely human, have actually gone through numerous genetic modifications aimed at increasing productivity. Their digestive system was modified to allow for more efficient extraction of nutrients allowing more food to be consumed and more energy to be extracted from it. Further advances were made before the gravity wave, allowing for increased neural capacity and functions, allowing for increased reflexes, increased cognitive speed, and increased memory. Culturally the K are, for the most part, fiercly atheistic and believe scientific experimentation is the only way to preserve peace and order in any civilization. They have also developed a healthy disdain for wasting time, leading to a language that is rather minimulistic. Most conversations are extremely short, and small talk is considered extremely rude. Ascetically they are yet again, very minimulistic, and hardly ever add on decorative flares to anything. Oddly enough however, artists, poets and musicians are widely respect for their ability to express simplicity in so many ways, creating more and more works of art each day, yet never growing repetitive.
