I say zee, but growing up in India, everyone else said Zed. Is it just a British thing?

Technically speaking, it's an "everyone-but-American" thing, which means that the American way is by definition correct.

In dutch it is 'zet', but I think it's 'zee' in english. 'Zed' just sounds odd.

Weirdo Canadians. I didn't even know about the whole "zed" thing until Stargate introduced the ZPM and one of the goofy Canadian scientists called it a ZedPM.

Oh, and wasn't Zed the name of one of the characters in Pulp Fiction?

They had a great exchange between MacKay and Sheppard about that in the first season (or was it 2nd?)

Zee, like a good American with the superior dialect.

And I also say "zee", with our supreme superiority of said dialect (Midwestern, those with very little accent).

Hence we are highly sought after for English as a second language education.

Z is the twenty-sixth and final letter of the modern Latin alphabet.

In many dialects of English, the letter's name is zed (IPA: /zɛd/), reflecting its derivation from the Greek zeta (see below). In American English dialects, its name is zee (/ziː/), deriving from a late 17th-century English dialectal form. Another English dialectal form is izzard, which dates from the mid-18th century, probably deriving from the French et zède, meaning "and z," or else from "s hard." A variant izzed is the predominant form in anglophone South Asia.

Other Indo-European languages pronounce the letter's name in a similar fashion, such as zet in Dutch, zède in French, zett in German, zeta in Italian and Spanish, zê in Portuguese, and se (ze) in Russian.

Zed sounds like a name. ALPHA AND ZED'S EXCELLENT ADVENTURE

And besides, the fact that it makes it rhyme with "tee" and thus make the alphabet song work well only proves my point that zee is superior. Sesame Street > any other children's program.

Sesame Street's grammar/language bits (and story sometimes...) are corrected for different countries though... however... if the Cookie Monster decides upon a new pronunciation I feel it is my duty to abide by it!

I say it "zee," although I have had professors call it "zed," which makes us chuckle sometimes. The radio station in Boston that I tend to listen to is ZLX, which is "zee ell ex," but when they have famous people give the call letters, Paul McCartney pronounces it "zed."

Useless trivia!

:yeah:

It rhymes with "vee," you mean.
