Questions about Judaism

soul_warrior said:
it is not allowed to WORK on a sabbath.
the orthodox take it to mean, among other stuff, "though shall not light a fire"
which means no cooking.
that in turn ends up as a need for a constant slowburning cookeryy device, or something taht will activate itself on a timer.
hence Sabbath Mode

Now I know more so I can sell Overpriced appliances to jewish people ! :D

Thanks much!

Do you know any more Jews here on CivFanatics?

civ2

I'm aetheist and know of religion nothing.Absolutely.
You could try asking Sh3kel, Winterfell, Nivi, Eli.
There were G-Man and Iceblaze, but I didn't see them for a long time here.

(I'm from Ukraine, Donetzk - Shachter Champion :goodjob: )

well,
A - im a jew. living in israel. fully fluent in hebrew and english
B - im a practicing aetheist
C - i have some knowledge of the Torah, the New Testament, some buddhist writing, etc (due to my interest in religions)

MY view is that the commandment translates as Thou shall not MURDER
i believe it means the generic - dont be bad, killing people for fun or whatever.

THERE are however LOTS of exemptions to this.
a favorite of mine is "do onto them before they do it onto you" (translation of spirit of verse)
also, IIRC, joshua went around clearing the lands of nonjews while establishing the hold of jews in the holy-land.
jewdaism is a peaceloving religion, that sanctifies life, and FORBIDS TAKING ANY LIFE (human. food is still food :D ) UNLESS you are threatened wih death yourself.
IN ORDER to save lives you may, and SHOULD take life.
self-defense is NOT MURDER and as such doesnot violate said commandment.

Thanks I tried getting an answer to this a while back, I'm assuming your talking straight translation via Hebrew to English, good that's exactly what I wanted although thanks Civ2 from Hebrew to Russian to English is almost as good in this case.

OK I'm going to go with murder, in that case I wonder why the King James Bible and all bibles in fact before the 20th centruy translated and in most cases still do translate it as kill and have done since the birth of Christianity? Only the feundementalist re-work it as murder as far as I can tell. A topic for another thread though, thanks for the answers from all btw.

Sidhe I can confirm that straight from hebrew its thou shalt not murder. The commandment being "al tirzah", meaning do not murder.

And yea I am circumcised. And being straight I have no clue how not being circumcised looks like :)

civ2 - I consider myself jewish only ethnically. I have an affection for only a few holidays(yom kippur, rosh hashana, hanuka and shavuot) and out of "personal-mythology" reasons. I am not a jew at all by religious definition and after considering it thoroughly I do not intend to be.

I've sent you PM :)

Didn't read Tora, and I'm afraid, never will:)

I mixed you and Winterfell when speaking of holidays.:)

Winterfell
Shalom!
You are not a Jew by religious definition only if your mother is NOT Jewish.
If it is so - so it is so.
If not - you are still Jewish and there's never too late.:D

Shalom
I dont really give a damn how religious dudes classify me. Religion and spirituality are both presonal private things between a man and himself, or better say a man and his deity/ies.
I could always make rebuttal on this subject as well. I am a jew because my mom is? you are a hinduist because you have heard of india and saw a cow. Has it any logical connection? no. Is religion logical? no, it is based on faith. So if you choose to cal me a jew(in religion) I choose to call you a hinduist? Does that piss you off? I bet it does.

Leitrahot:)

Winterfell
First of all: Le-hitra'ot from Lir'ot.:D :D :D
And seriously, being Jewish is not really a choice but a fact.:)
Whilst being Hindu, Muslim, Christian, etc. is ONLY a matter of choice.
Jew is not a "faith" (it includes that too but is not limited by it).
Jew is also a nation - biologically too.
And every biological Jew has an inheritance in the Jewish "way of life" - the Torah.
The biggest problem in such cases is that you had no possibility to grasp the beauty of it - which is obvious.
Where are you from btw?
And you are wrong - religion is not only between a person and God - it's also between person and another person!
And that's where I can see you have a little knowledge about Judaism.
But it's never too late to start again from the beginning.
There's nothing to be ashamed of - a baal-tshuva is always welcomed and helped.:)
Think for yourself - are you gonna get rid of your rightful inheritance?

Question to all Jews:
If you state yourselves being religious - specify which "branch" exactly.
I'm trying to become Chabad.:D :D :D

Hey civ2, I'm Jewish as well. I would consider myself a conservative Jew. :)
