Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

So, I've just started playing Civ IV. When my cities are producing surplus food this sometimes seems to go to Food, adding towards the city growth, and sometimes is added to production. When it's added to production I get extra hammers, but the city isn't getting any closer to growing. I don't see how I can choose which of these happens. Any ideas?

When you are making Settlers or Workers the excess food is added to your production. If you aren't making Workers or Settlers your cities will continue to grow, if there is excess food.

Hope this helps. :)

How do you make a Map that can be transferred over and over to other Custom Games?

I've been selecting Custom Game, Selecting AI opponents, Launching the Game, then selecting World builder and creating my Map, there has to be a better way...is there?

The world builder is accessible from the main game. Is that a problem for you?

Here are two useful thread about map making:

In the World Builder, select the save option, give your map a name and save it. It will appear on the maps list in either Custom Games or Custom Scenarios, I've forgotten which. Choose it as your map and create your custom game.

This thread looks like what you want. :)

Not sure. I know it's possible to make technologies only researchable when you're in a certain religion, as that was done in Fall from Heaven. I suggest you ask one of the Fall from Heaven mod makers about it. I'm guessing there's some way to do what you want, but I'm not sure how easy it'd be.

Thank you. :)

New question: Where can i request a specific civilization to be made, along with a leaderhead for it?

Yeah, no shortcut key. However, you can simply open the in-game menu and click "regenerate". Doesn't really take much more time. ;)

Should point out that the "Regenerate map" function is only available on the first turn... it might not be obvious to some that you can't regenerate a map for a game in progress.

Well, as long as you haven't started another game in the meantime, you should always have the first turn save of the game in your "single -> auto" folder. The game automatically saves it for you. So you can load up that save and hit "regenerate" if you so desire. :)

Is there any way to change the established religion of a city, or remove an unwanted religion from a city? Or convert an original (founded by you) city back to your state religion?

I'm playing Vanilla BTW

In vanilla, without using the World Builder, no. Orion's Inquisition mod is built around religious intolerance and I believe that one of the BAT/Better AI/Revolutions mods also adds inquisitions.

Thanks Arakhor! I have a follow up Q... How many religions can 1 city have? If more than one do both holy cities (assuming they have used GProphet to build Shrine) get the +1 gold bonus?

Every city can have every religion and if you're fortunate enough to have a double holy city and two Great Prophets, then yes you get the effects of both.

You can get all the religions in one city. However, each additional religion becomes harder to add as the chance to successfully convert the city to another religion by using a missionary becomes smaller and smaller. Also only one religion can naturally spread to the city. Other religions have to be actively added to the city with missionaries. But you will get +1 gold from the related shrines in the shrine cities. Note also that these +1 gold bonuses are subjective to gold bonus buildings and the Wall Street small wonder.

Because of the hammer cost of missionaries and the lower chance of adding another religion, the building of missionaries to improve the shrine cities can become an inefficient way to improve your empire once you are adding multiple religions to each city.

Quick question, if you are planning for a cultural win, how do use Great Artists more effectively. Is settling them down better or using the culture bomb?

EDIT: Now I've got three Great Artists! I'm suspending my game until I know what to do with them.

If it's very early in the game, settling is sometimes more effective. Otherwise, and especially near the end of the game, it's much more effective to use the culture bomb. Remember to use the Great Artists in your third highest culture city (not the first or second highest!), since that's the city that will ultimately determine how long it takes to get a cultural victory. :)
