Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

In the files for the mod final frontier, where do I find the audio files for the soundtrack?

Probably best to ask in the relevant forum/thread. If you're not sure where the discussion forum/thread for the mod is, try doing a quick search in the Creation and Customization forum. :)

You could look in \Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Mods\Final Frontier\Assets\Sounds.

Also, all the files ending with _SFX from \Firaxis Games\Sid Meier's Civilization 4\Beyond the Sword\Assets\Sounds\Diplomacy.

Can I upgrade a unit to one that requires a special resource if I don't have access to that resource? For instance, can I upgrade Knights to Cavalry if I don't have Horses?

1. When using the reconnaissance function (the binocular icon) with aircraft, I've noticed that if I select a tile that is a hill, I uncover more fog than I would if I had selected a flatland tile. Is that because a hill blocks vision and so viewing the top of a hill allows me to see over it?

(and if so, it's odd that planes would have trouble seeing over hills)

Would it then follow that selecting a peak tile would let me see even further? Also, are all aircraft created equal when it comes to scouting?

2. Is there any way to tell if any events have affected a tile in the past (e.g. prairie dog event, pearls event, tin) to boost its base output? I sometimes capture cities and subsequently wind up puzzled why 2 identical tiles have different outputs.

Yes, the reconnaissance mission allows vision as if it were land units that cannot look over obstructions and I find that extremely weird. So weird that I've reported it as a bug in the unofficial patch forum: here. I've added some screenshots to that post that might help you fully understand the rules governing the reconnaissance mission.

If you exactly know the random events that could happen, then you could deduce which random event has hit that tile. Therefore, the BUG Mod has added a feature that places a sign with the random event effect on the tile, even if you uncover the tile after it has been effected by a random event.

So I just got Civ4 and am working through the tutorial but I'm stumped on building a quarry on the designated tile, as I already built a cottage there on a previous turn.

Relevant options seem greyed out, so I can't progress.

Is there a way around this or do I need to restart?

Welcome to CFC.

Is there marble or stone on the tile? Because you can only build quarries on ties that have those resources. If there is, have you researched masonry yet? That technology is needed in order to build quarries on said tiles. Otherwise, it should work.

And if it is a problem with the tutorial, don't worry about it. You will learn much easier through practice on low difficulty levels, and by reading articles on this site.

Hi Cam, thanks. :)

Yeah, there's stone on the site.
I only had the option to build a cottage at first but now the tutorial has given me a blue circle over it and asked me to build a quarry there.
There's no option to destroy the cottage that I can see and as I said, the tutorial won't progress otherwise.

I guess I could just scrap the tut but it's a bit frustrating. :undecide:

This is my first bash at Civ4 and I haven't played any of the other iterations in so long, I can't remember which ones I've played (always been playing the Total War series or AoE 1 & 2). :hide:

There is no 'destroy improvement' button (at least not for your own troops inside your own borders :p). You should be able to click 'build quarry', and the Worker will start working on it while the Cottage is still there. On the turn that he finishes, the Cottage will disappear, to be replaced by a Quarry.

EDIT: If by 'greyed out' you mean 'not blue and glowing', you're not really talking about greyed out - the blue and glowing thing simply means the computer recommends taking that action (similar to the blue circles). If it really is greyed out, it will be very dark and seem flatter than other buttons.

I agree, though - don't waste time on the tutorial. Rather, play a game on a low difficulty setting (Chieftain) with all the help settings on (Sid's tips, advisor popups, AI recommendations) and you'll pick everything up a lot faster. Post any questions, no matter how apparently noobish, in this thread, and people will respond very quickly.

Strangely, while waiting for a response, I noticed that all my worker commands were greyed out, including the move option...
I just created a new worker unit and now it allows me to build a quarry there! :crazyeye:
Guess it was just a bug.

Thanks guys. I'll get used to it soon. ;)

Can enemy settlers be captured? I’ve had this happen to me several times on Noble/ Vanilla, where I see an enemy short stack. Usually an archer or two and a settler, but when I kill the escort the settler turns into a worker? Is this the way it’s supposed to be?

Yup, that's the way it works. A captured Settler always turns into a Worker.

Hi,
Today I bought Civ IV Complete (with Warlords and Beyond the Sword).
I installed it bla bla but I can't figure how to play the game inclusively-ie. how do I play it with both expansions being utilised?

I can start the original, I can start Warlords, I can start Beyond the Sword but I haven't a clue how to start the game so that both the expansions are integrated - is there a way to do this or do I have to play each expansion desperately?

Sorry if this has been asked before, my thanks in advance!

Jack

If you play Beyond the Sword, you're playing the whole game. Firaxis aren't quite that brain dead :)

To expand on what Arakhor said: BTS incorporates the entire Warlords expansion. Both expansions incorporate the basic (Vanilla) game.

Warlords modified some aspects of the basic game, and added some new things. BTS modified some aspects of the basic game, and of Warlords, and added yet more new things. So BTS is Vanilla + Warlords + BTS changes.

Hello everyone, I'm new to the Civ world and have the feeling I'll really enjoy this game. However, I'm having some difficulties finding some answers to very basic questions. I'm more used to RTS where you have drones of one sort or another you can see gathering resources. How do the citizens go about getting these. I can't figure it out. Also, When a worker is told to help improve a city automatically and disappears into it, what is it doing.
I appreciate the help and hope you'll help me in the future. Complicated game.

First, welcome to CivFanatics (and Civ by the sound of it).
:band::dance:[party]:beer::band:

Reasorces are "harvested" by citizens from your city working tiles. If you double click a city you will see a map of the tiles around it. Some of these should have white cicles on them. These are being worked by the city, and the reasorces form them (food, hammers and gold) are gained by the city.

I hope this amkes sence, please ask away if this or anything else is unclear.

You need workers to access resources and they can't be worked unless the resource is within your cultural borders. I assume that when a worker disappears inside, he doesn't have anything to do and is just waiting.
