Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

Ok, I went to install the download (v1.61) because I don't have BTS, and isn't that something you pay for?
Anyway, I followed the link to the download, and then SmartScreen Filter told me it was unsafe and would not let me download.
???

The mods may be for BTS. You are playing the original CIV (aka "vanilla"). Therefore, you will need mods for vanilla. There are probably some still in the downloads area but you will need to be sure that the ones you pick are for vanilla. Mods for BTS use features of BTS which are not in vanilla and won't work with it.

Also, since you indicate that you are using 1.61 and got the message that you need 1.74, you may be using mods that are for vanilla but that use features from the last update to vanilla, which is 1.74. You will need to update to 1.74 in that case. (It is a free update.) Don't use the in game updater. It will try to download the update from the Firaxis site, where it is no longer posted. On the top of this page click the "Patch & Update" link in the Civ4 drop down menu. Find the 1.74 patch on that screen and select one of the mirror sites to download it from. Run the patch and you should be all set.

I have small question - if I play unrestricted leaders and choose some aggresive leader and Inca as civ, do Quechua still get just combat 1 promotion (because its the same what melee unit get from AGG)? :)

So, I found the 1.74 patch (uploaded by Thunderfall, it said).
I went to download, where it redirects me to AtomicGamer.
I download the file, only to be blocked by SmartScreen Filter, claiming the file is unsafe.
1. If you could reply telling me it's safe, that would be appreciated (just want verification)
2. A lot of people in the comments section said it screwed their game. Is that true?
Thanks in advance

Guys! Is it of any use to build courthouses when in State Property? Won't SP remove all maintenance cost for cities?

State Property doesn´t remove all maintenance costs, there is still the one for numbers of cities, although indeed every other maintenance cost falls away since colony maintenance is based on the one for distance which is the one State Property does remove. Indirectly it also does away with corporation payments since corporations aren´t allowed in the first place, so indeed Courthouses do lose a lot of their value under State Property, but they aren´t completely useless.

You should, since the leader is aggressive.

I think elmurcis is asking if the Combat I that comes with Quechuas will stack with the Combat I from Aggressive and become Combat II. Sadly, no, it doesn't. Unrestricted leaders can create some very interesting trait/UU synergies- Toku of Ottomans or England, Boudica of Rome, etc.- but sometimes it gives you redundancies that don't help. (Like the time I started as Ethiopia with some PRO leader or another, hoping for OOTB Oromos with Drill 3- nope. :()

Quechua has Combat I as a remnant of the AGG trait of HC in Vanilla. Developpers decided to not weaken such a weak and fast obsoleted unit as Quechua.

Yeah, the Quechua's a real piece of crap in BtS. :sarcasm:

CivIV-BTS

In my current game, the city of Isurium can not build Galleons or Caravels; although it is a coastal city and can build workboats, a harbbor, and a Lighthouse. I would like to know why this is? It shouldn't matter but it is on the coast of an inliand sea.

I've run into this as well, and it appears to be by design. I'm not sure what logic the game applies to make this determination, but some bodies of salt water suffer from this limitation.

There is a minimum water area necessary to build some things. The values are not all the same. For example it is 10 for the harbor but 20 for a galleon. This is controlled by the iMinAreaSize tag in the XML for both buildings and units (it also works for land related things, but is not actually used for that anywhere). Most water related buildings require the water area to be 10, an exception being the Drydock which requires 20, and water related units require 20.

As an aside, 10 is the minimum size a body of water has to be in order to be salt water instead of a fresh water lake.

The_J implied it is possible that was implemented to help the AI in not spamming water units in small water bodies.

Hi.

In my last game I discovered a source of gems when working a mine at my capital. Is this player specific occurrence or can the AI also discover gold/gems/copper etc at worked mines?

Also does Tokugawa declare war at pleased? I had a weird DOW by him at the same game. He was plotting but was pleased with me and his worst enemy Ramesses was already at war making him an obvious target. I was going for space and signed a defensive pact with Toku and he DOWed me the next turn.

I am playing BTS with the latest patch.

Yes. There are also some spreadsheets with this information available.

Maybe we need some kind of memory tool to remember who can plot at pleased. I still remember the colors of the rainbow from junior high school thanks to Roy G. Biv.

The AI can also discover reasorces in mines. I think it is 1 / 10,000 per worked mine per turn of discovering a reasorce.

Is that the best reference you are aware of? So the only thing that varies is if they will make plans for war at pleased? So none will make war at freindly and all will make war at cautious?
