Quick Answers / 'Newbie' Questions

How convenient, our resident combat math expert just made a great post that's exactly what you're looking for here :D If you're lazy you can skip over the specifics for the dumb-thumb-rules at the bottom.

Awesome, thanks.

About combat calculations and promotions:

Say you have a unit in a city, defending. Another unit is attacking. When I have a choice in promoting the attacking unit, it always seemed obvious to me that, in this situation (= attacking a city), I should take the 20% bonus that City Raider I gives me over the generic 10% bonus that is Combat I. After all, 20% is better than 10%.

But then a few days ago, I read somewhere that this is not the case, and that in some circumstances, the Combat promotion is actually better, even when attacking a city.

So now I'm looking for
a) an explanation of why this is (I'm reading the archives looking for answers, but everything seems horribly complicated)

and perhaps more important:
b) a clear rule about when I should choose the Combat promotion over the City Raider promotion
This was new to me also until fairly recently. I believe the short answer would be that only the bonus from the Combat promotion is added to the attackers Strength - all other bonuses are calculated from the defenders Strength. So it would be very situational when City Raider actually is useful, since you always should weaken defending units with siege units before attacking. Or something like in that effect. :crazyeye:

If I currently on the FREE RELIGION civic, does this mean that I will not earn any income at all on all the state religion buildings that I already built??

What does everyone think of the FREE RELIGION civic anyway??

Thanks

adrianj provided an excellent answer to your question in the Condensed tips for beginners thread.

Utopia, you really need to stop cross-posting your queries. It just irritates people and is bad "netiquette".

(I hope that this is in good place)

I do not include/understand yet how one can establish/present in his signature direct Link (not a text of suggestion) with the thread or other elements which one wishes to present to the visitors (see my Signature).
Is it necessary to have a particular program, or there it are other methods?

Thank you to share your knowledge !

Can any unit attack a Submarine - as long as it's been spotted?

As far as I know, yes, subs become as vulnerable as any naval unit when spotted. However, I'm a bit unsure what happens in the case if the sub is spotted in a tile where there are already units hostile towards it (you move a battleship in a tile with a sub which isn't spotted yet, then your airship reveals the sub... what happens?).

There is also a little button that looks like a chain on a globe (I think) that does the same thing.

How can I uninstall Civ4? When I try to start playing it says that there are parts missing, so I can't play it and thats why I would like to uninstall it.

The same way you uninstall anything else - either through the option provided in the Start Menu or on the DVD or by using the Add/Remove Programs facility in the Control Panel.

When a technology says "Obsoletes X" does that mean it does it when you discover it, or when anyone does? For example, Astronomy says "Obsoletes Stonehenge." Does that mean Stonehenge becomes obsolete when my neighbour is the first to discover Astronomy, or only when I do? Also, what is a sucession game? And finally, what is X: X :commerce: = 1 :gold:?

  1. A wonder or resource only becomes obsolete for you when you discover the obsoleting technology. The same goes for the AI; you may have Astronomy, but the AI owner of Stonehenge retains the wonder's benefits until it obtains that technology.
  2. A succession game is one played by multiple users, where one user plays an agreed-to number of turns, then passes the game along to the next player, who plays the next set of turns, and so on.
  3. I'm not sure what you're asking here--something to do with commerce versus gold, I would gather, which is a common point of confusion in the game.

:commerce: stands for "Commerce" and is used to quantify the economic activity within your empire - and beyond. This :commerce: can then be used for things like Research (:science:) or Taxes (:gold:) by setting the percentiles in the upper left corner of the interface.

:gold: also stands for "Gold" but only for actual money you get to use as the leader of your empire. There are other sources of :gold: than Taxes, also.

It becomes really confusing once you're wprking a Gold special resource which generates :commerce:, which you then have to convert into :gold: by taxing it! :crazyeye:

edit: I tried to explain this in more detail only a few days ago.

Sorry, I typed it on my phone, so I was trying to make it short and sweet. I mean how many :commerce: does it take to make one :gold: in taxes. I guess that depends on what the slider is set to, but if there's a relative answer, that would be nice.

And thanks for the help on the wonder obsolete question.

An opponent builds Stonehenge and then discovers Astronomy (obsoleting it). My civ doesn't have Astronomy and I conquer the city with Stonehenge. Does my Civ get the benefit from Stonehenge?

And thanks for the help on the wonder obsolete question.

I'll use an example.

Assume a city gains 10 :commerce: from various sources (tiles, trade routes) and the tax/science/culture/espionage rate is set at 30% :gold:, 70% :science: and 0% :culture: and :espionage:.

Also assume the city has a single merchant specialist employed and a market and grocer.

In this case the city receives a base gold output of:

30% of 10 :commerce: = 3 :gold:
merchant specialist = 3 :gold:
Total base gold = 6 :gold:

The base gold output is increased by 50% due to the market and grocer. So the total :gold: will be 150% of 6 :gold: = 9 :gold:

This is just one example. You can find these calculations by hovering over the value of gold in a city screen.

Yes.

Does a "phony" (I'm on another continent, not sending any troops. They're not landing troops on my shores either) war produce war weariness?

Also, are there only always two candidates for Diplomatic victory vote?
