The police have identified the killer, Gianluca Casseri, was a right-wing extremist, and some Italian sources are reporting that he was a sympathiser or associate of the far-right Casapound group. Could this be considered a similar attack to the Norwegian shootings earlier this year? Are we going to see more such attacks?

It's not mental illness to direct violence towards outsiders; it is normal human behaviour. Poor "socialization" and low allegiance to the values of mainstream modern society are probably this guy's "mental illness".

Firenze?

Europe is such a violent place this week, what the hell?

Needed a distraction from financial issues in light (and by light we mean lava pools) of the Holidays.

That's not what was said, precisely, but unfortunately diverting hostility to outsiders is a well documented part of human nature. Escaping from this with ideological fantasy is fine for lots of purposes, but don't expect to understand people any better by applying tags like "mental illness" to things human beings have always done and frequently do do in more socially accepted ways.

I don't think there will be more of these shootings in the future. They wil probably continue at the same rate. Brevik was a loner and I expect this guy is too. I wonder if he was taking any drugs.

Yeah, it's not about explaining, it's about making the general believe that they're "isolated cases"... nothing to see here, carry on. Else that public might figure out that such directing of violence against outsiders is far more normal that they think, and indeed what makes any war possible for example. And authorities won't want the public to think about that and, just perhaps, start questioning their willingness to partake on the authorities' warmongering, do they? Better to just label anyone who doesn't direct the violence in the desired way "insane", as opposed to the sane killing of (usually foreign nowadays) enemies of the state which is thus always left unquestioned.

Yes, given that the economy not just of Italy or of Europe but the whole world is probably going to get much much worse before it gets better. Be very afraid.

BTW, I was thinking that in 2012 there will eventually be attacks against Franco-German/EU institutions (in Europe) and against Chinese institutions and nationals (anywhere).

Yep, pretty much.

It's nice to see America and Europe getting over their petty differences and working so well together. America brings down the world economy, Europe keeps it there.
