I think it's a failure of communication, rather than comprehension. I took your phrase to mean that lots of people around the world are familiar enough with American football to make a value judgement on how it plays (or doesn't), which would imply a much higher level of global awareness than I think is present.

I thought I made it obvious that I understood your general point by referencing cricket as a similar sport.

Hmmm. I think given the world wide viewing of the SuperBowl any excusing based on the premise that people 'aren't familiar' is unwarranted. I think you misread it and are now squirming like a cricket on a hook.

Well, given that I had no idea that the SuperBowl was televised globally or that anyone other than a few ex-pats and sports afficianados would care to watch, we would both seem to be in error right now.

Well, it is common, at least among the people I am familiar with, that many people not in the US have at least a passing familiarity with American sports of baseball and football, even if they don't know them well. And many of these people express that they don't care for these sports, because of all the standing around that goes on with them. There are more minutes of inaction than there are of action, and many sports fans don't particularly like that. So I had this though of what other sports had similar action.

When Chanel 4 (4th UK TV station)started back in the 80s they broadcast American football. It got reasonably popular to watch maybe Darts and Snooker level.

I do remember what Channel 4 was, but thanks for the tip. :)

Hmmm. I certainly turned out to be.

Bought the hype.

Again.

Dammit.

Apparently neither of us noticed that I did in fact misread something - Cutlass mentioned baseball and I wrote basketball. :p

Five go mad in Dorset was quite good on the first night.

I'll take your word for it, since I was probably still wearing nappies at the time!

Just look at clip it would upset to many people here if they did not get it.

Having just seen the first couple of minutes, that is pretty, uh, high on the satire scale.

My only problem with hockey is how difficult it can be to follow the puck.

The trick is to stop trying to follow the puck and follow the player with the puck instead. It might sound crazy, but it is serious good advice. It will take about ten seconds for you to realize that the guy with the puck moves entirely differently than everyone else, so even though his stick is obscuring the puck most of the time there will be no doubt in your mind where it is. Then you will start being able to recognize from his movements not only where the puck is but what he is going to try to do with it.

Super Bowl is two words, you philistines.

I have all of about 20 minutes experience in watching hockey and don't actually intend to watch more

but thanks for the tips.
