Random Rants 76: Argh! Augh! Ahhh!

Because shutdowning the whole administration because the big man wants to construct an absurd wall is perfectly fair i guess. What the common American think about public workers. Would support them in case of strike?

I think it would depend on the issue. There is a powerful bias against striking in the US. I have argued this point with "progressive democrats" somewhat recently; they were dumbfounded when I said that millions of people not going to work would be a far more powerful political tool than millions of people voting.

While true, that would also be infinitely difficult to organize. If you really want to see dumbfounded, try telling someone that going to work is actually an option and they don't really have to.

Well, that reaction from that group of people is one reason I think public support for striking federal workers might be a bit thin on the ground.

What would legislation to prevent future shutdowns look like? How would it not come into conflict with the text of the Constitution?
Here in Canada, if the House doesn't pass a budget or other money bill, it triggers a new election. Sometimes this can be an advantage.

Eugh .. I've been eating two prunes every day as my lunch, and they're not helping me. I'm feeling really quite hungry right now, but I won't be eating for about three and a half hours.

If "they're not helping" is referring to a bowel movement, it might be impacted. Which is very bad.

It seems from the context that it's referring to "feeling full and not hungry" but idk

So today started off a nice and rainy 15C, which is what I dressed for, then rapidly collapsed to -3 with a 25km/h knife of wind

That's basically what it's supposed to do here over the course of tomorrow afternoon. Except hopefully without the rain.

Rant: trying to access flash-only sites in the Wayback Machine really does not work well.

It's the reason I'm wearing 5 layers of clothes right now, including a fleece housecoat and winter-weight socks, and I'm still cold. I did have a heater the manager let me use, but he took it back this afternoon; there's another suite without much heat, and they have a new baby there. So I have to do without tonight, and I've been promised another heater tomorrow.

Environment Canada says it'll be up to -22C tomorrow afternoon, which qualifies as warm, given that it was nearly -50C a couple of nights ago. Therefore, I plan to try to get a couple of errands done.
 I don't understand how this is even legal.
Mom's podiatrist said that her MRI confirmed the diagnosis made from the x-ray. Even though 2 weeks of antibiotics have left her foot looking almost completely healed, there is still a bone infection on both sides of the metatarsalphalangeal joint. The doctor said we could try putting her on intravenous antibiotics for 6 weeks, but that has less than a 1% chance of actually eliminating the infection and would probably just buy us some time before we need to surgically remove the infected bone. She recommended we go ahead and amputate the toe within a week.
So, how did it go? :cringe:
When my state was being affected by that polar vortex last week, I was wearing like three or more layers. Sweatpants, an undershirt, a sweater or turtleneck, my cardigan, and often I still wrapped up in a blanket. I must've looked like a giant grape or something with hair.

No socks though, hell will need to freeze over before I'll start wearing socks.
You've posted about your sockophobia. What's up with that? If you wore socks you might need to wear one fewer layer.

Two prunes every day for lunch? That's neither healthful nor healthy.

The way I heard it this afternoon when I went to the office to remind the manager about the heater is that each building the company owns is required to have a minimum of four heaters to lend to tenants who are having problems. That's not so bad in the smaller buildings, but the building I live in has 120 suites (20/floor). The bottom 20 of us live above the parkade, which is basically a wind tunnel that's cold even in summer. In winter it's absolutely frigid.

I don't begrudge a two-day old baby some extra heat; I do get a few extra favors around here that some other tenants don't get, so in turn I have to be a good neighbor to others. One of the maintenance guys called around and found a heater for me at another building, drove over to get it, and now my feet are no longer cold. Of course I do have to be careful, as these things are potential fire hazards. So I'm not running it on high, and making sure Maddy doesn't play near it as one of her toys is a cheeseburger wrapper.

I hate wearing socks as well, but it just got so cold that there really wasn't a choice. Maddy prefers to crawl under the fleece blankets rather than sleep on top when it's cold, so the heater is benefiting her as well.

Agreed.

.One of our old apartments had a space heater. It was really nice to have because my knees hurt when it's cold. Had to leave it behind when we moved out, though.

and yes , turns out the latest attempt to communicate with my pals has ended up with the 21st dead USB . That's exactly why ı think ı saw those 4 cops at the light rail station coming to the web , and of course a time should come that words be carried out . Even when good old USN can not trust to find its way in the dark or we are yet alive , after the best years of ISIL creatures and gods of war and yes , these will make sense . One of these days .

If your USB drives keep dying, you really need to check your USB port for voltage issues. Or get a better source of drives.

am using USBs since 2006 or so , started with a couple of 1.44MB floppies filled Daily . The USbs die , because apparently the locals think they are threatening my pals to have my downloads killed so that they will allow some bankaccount or whatever . Yesterday's newspaper had some stupid article in its local papers . Apparently last year's football team cost far more but lacked hearts , the title was 1 Points for 16 million Euros and no discernible way of how they reached that number , don't know whether they are telling that there is no need ... You know , if ı had that kind of money , ı would be real and ı either would have secure web connection at home , or buy all those 1000s of books in paperback or there would be many dead people .

and yes , ı was going to buy Toshibas , but strangely they didn't arrive at the store and the store clerk didn't let me buy 32GBs of the available, because they are to be sold for next week . Barely keeping myself from solemnly woving that it wouldn't be fair to investigate the entire chain , all 8000 of them across the country for Congregation links . As the claim was started by their commercial opponents . It's really hard to be a nice person .

If I ever existed in the same local space as -50C I would be wearing as many pairs of socks as physically possible.

I would cease to exist.

I wear most days of the year, including even with sandals!
