When it rain it pours, eh? Just found I did a major major opsie. My uni application is going to get scrapped due to the fact that I lack an exam I thought I had. I thought I had it from way back when but due to a change in 2006 in how they organise the curriculums and whatnot it slipped my gaze. Taking the exam shouldn't be a hassle but everything gets pushed back a year now for me it seems. ffs
What kind of plants make you feel happy? I've received flowers in the mail before, as well as oils from eucalyptus, lemongrass, peppermint, etc ... I don't know why your postal service would confiscate your friend's package? I've never put lemongrass oil on candies, but it's really great in tea.
Bless your heart, mary.

Next you'll tell me they got rid of the fancy water fountain that tells you how many plastic bottles you've saved, located conveniently next to the single-use coffee pod station.

Millions of years from now, octopus archaeologists will conclude that something called "KEURIG" must have been their god

My family won't let me go down to the local shop dressed in pyjamas. :(
But, after nearly 3 weeks, they still haven't noticed that I have no other footwear save for my favourite blue velvet slippers and that I have worn them exclusively in Singapore, Porto, Amsterdam, and Berlin :)
Some people can't see Mr. Fabulous even when he's standing there right in front of them!

I got passed up for two jobs.

I've decided to lead the interview process by asking what salary is being offered upfront and declining to move forward if they don't offer what I want. I have had a multiple companies royally waste my time lately and I'm sick of burning PTO to travel to them only for them to aggressively low ball. "We will pay you like an intern but we're changing the world so deal with it" is becoming frighteningly common in aerospace now courtesy of Elon Musk. On top of the bad offers, the general rule has been that companies are extremely rude to deal with and discourteous of my time. Multiple times now I've had companies forget about a call-in interview I've re-arranged my schedule to take and other transgressions like that. Taken individually, none of it is a huge deal but it's become a pattern that needed to be broken.

One of the companies that rejected me decided to set up shop in a remote beach town, which is cool, but it's basically like my college town with beaches instead of forests and homeless people instead of meth heads. I was kind of excited at the possibility of living near the beach but it's in the middle of nowhere. They asked me to come up for an interview and I had a feeling they weren't going to be offering enough to get me to move up there and I didn't want to travel up there for a deal that was never going to happen. I asked them what their salary range was and they refused to answer (it's 'competitive', which is code for 'we have free snacks' in my experience). Someone here (redacted for privacy) gave me the excellent advice to just tell them what my minimum to accept was and I did that and it saved me an unnecessary trip as indeed it was outside of their range. Oh and they kept trying to bait and switch the job I was applying for which was extremely annoying. I can look at it as me rejecting them rather than the other way around but it still sucks.

The other job just flat out declined to interview me which sucks and was unexpected.

I recently got the best review of my life from my current manager but the company hasn't really done much to show they want to retain me.
patience can be virtue. Often companies want to know the best people are sticking around before they grant raises etc. The constant desire to change jobs and push for more every year or two takes away from actually achieving things that take 3-5 years to complete. Could you go back to your boss and create a 3 year plan of work that allows you to add a significant item to your resume and let them know that you are sticking around for a while and not job hopping? Focusing on actual work is much better than always looking for the next move. :)

Birdjaguar, you're usually on point, but that idea sounds like a joke for the aerospace industry. Besides tech they're one of the notorious industries for chewing through employees and experiencing high turnover because of both burnout and a systemic refusal to compensate fairly.

At any rate: Hobbs already has been adding significant items to his resume, and he's had to fight to get basic recognition for it. I think it's unreasonable to tell someone to just be content with mediocrity and to presume benevolence from the corporations. If that were a reasonable assumption to make, the original problem wouldn't exist to begin with.

I'm so sorry @hobbsyoyo! That must be so incredibly frustrating and disappointing for you :( I think it's a good idea if you have a minimum salary you're willing to accept to tell them upfront, it saves you both trouble. I'm surprised they don't ask you themselves! I've had some recruiters from other companies contacting me, and that's one of the first things they ask me, what I'm looking for in a salary, and I tell them if I couldn't work from home that's worth probably an extra $20 thousand to me, and they totally understand. I hope you're able to find something where you'll get what you've earned! :)

Um

I'ma let Rick James take this one
Oh dear, now I'm even more confused ...

My rant for today ... I'm in a lot of pain, it's been 29 days this time, and I don't remember when I was last this bad. I'm on my second straight day of a horrible headache, and I feel so bad I can barely focus. I'm thinking I'll just take the rest of the afternoon as a "soft" day off, meaning I'm not really going to sign out, so I'll be available to answer emails and messages and such, but I'm not really going to do anything more today. At least I know I'll be totally clear for my wedding in sixteen days! :)

Mary Jane = marijuana
happy plant oil =CBD oil (most likely) which is being used increasingly to treat a variety of issues including muscle and joint pain and epileptic seizures

If the weather keeps on as it has, I advise you to pack a medium jacket, toque, gloves and sensible shoes for Banff.

We've been having snow here.

I know you're not going to Jasper, but Banff and Jasper are close enough together and this is an elevation thing (we haven't had snow here, just a lot of rain, not to mention a day of really weird weather that included everything from snow to summer weather).

So be prepared for anything. Seriously, check a reliable weather service for this area and wherever you're flying into (Calgary, I presume; don't take a car rental place's word that the weather is good, since the last people who did that ended up stranded for 14 hours in a blizzard). I've seen it snow in the mountains in July.

*feels really stupid*
People often use euphemisms for marijuana or cannabis, since those words are sometimes flagged. And nowadays Trump wants to know everything about what you've done online relating to social media.

That pretty much guarantees I wouldn't be welcome in your country. I've been too open about my contempt for your government.

CBC article said:
The U.S. State Department is now requiring nearly all applicants for U.S. visas to submit their social media usernames, previous email addresses and phone numbers. It's a vast expansion of the Trump administration's enhanced screening of potential immigrants and visitors.

In a move that's just taken effect after approval of the revised application forms, the department says it has updated its immigrant and non-immigrant visa forms to request the additional information, including "social media identifiers," from almost all applicants.

The change, which was proposed in March 2018, is expected to affect about 15 million foreigners who apply for visas to enter the United States each year.

"National security is our top priority when adjudicating visa applications, and every prospective traveller and immigrant to the United States undergoes extensive security screening," the department said. "We are constantly working to find mechanisms to improve our screening processes to protect U.S. citizens, while supporting legitimate travel to the United States."

Social media, email and phone number histories had only been sought in the past from applicants who were identified for extra scrutiny, such as people who'd travelled to areas controlled by terrorist organizations. An estimated 65,000 applicants per year had fallen into that category.

Process to help in confirming identity

The department says collecting the additional information from more applicants "will strengthen our process for vetting these applicants and confirming their identity."

The new rules apply to virtually all applicants for immigrant and non-immigrant visas. When it filed its initial notice to make the change, the department estimated it would affect 710,000 immigrant visa applicants and 14 million non-immigrant visa applicants, including those who want to come to the U.S. for business or education.

The new visa application forms list a number of social media platforms and require the applicant to provide any account names they may have had on them over the previous five years. They also give applicants the option to volunteer information about social media accounts on platforms not listed on the form.

In addition to their social media histories, visa applicants are now asked for five years of previously used telephone numbers, email addresses, international travel and deportation status, as well as whether any family members have been involved in terrorist activities.

Only applicants for certain diplomatic and official visa types are exempt from the requirements.

Thank you for the tip!

I just checked ... looks like the ten days I'll be up there have a low of 40 and a high of only 70 .. ugh! And almost every day is "cloudy" or with a chance of rain ...

I'll probably avoid snow at least, and I'm sure it's still going to be beautiful! :)

My lower limit for skirt & sandals is 30, so I should still be good! Bless my high tolerance for cold :)

A recent documentary on Norwegian pig farms using concealed cameras is creating a lot of stir these days. It shows some pretty grotesque treatment of the animals parred with appalling attitudes from the farmers. Really goes right in the face of the image the industry tries to front, that Norwegian livestock standards are so unique and fantastic. Bullcrap. Industrialised meat farming, what a horrible industry filled with horrible people.

I am meeting the same kind of ridiculous bureaucratic obstacle in actually getting handed my degree even if I got to pass my last final exam roughly a year ago. It's grrr-eat!

I'm sick and tired of defending things, which a) other people did and b) which I myself think were stupid to do.
In my professional/academic experience, this is called teamwork.

Keep in mind that this is Alberta. There's a reason we have a saying here: "If you don't like the weather, wait five minutes."

Actually, a bit of chilly weather isn't the worst thing there. I've been there in mid-May, and while there was still a little ice and snow around, it was warm enough. There were skiers getting in a last weekend on Mt. Norquay, and my friend and I went to Lake Minnewanka (where the infamous photobombing squirrel photo was taken). If you get a chance to go there, you should. It's every bit as beautiful as Lake Louise and probably much less crowded (they have to turn people away from Lake Louise sometimes in summer as it gets very crowded there).

The worst thing that could happen would be forest fire. The air will be awful, the scenery will be nonexistent (zero visibility from smoke), and you might be evacuated. So let's hope it holds off until August.

I've had 8 bosses in 2 years. Making a 3 year plan is impossible.
All at the same company? Then ask for a one year plan with measurable goals. You can either keep looking for "the next job" while you are working or you can find a way to settle in and stay where you are and structure things for both you and the company to benefit from. You goal is to try to structure a program that is important to the company around you that keeps you focused, happier and measured so you can point to specific things you have accomplished for the company over time. You might have to sell them on the value of such an approach.
