Random Rants #88: [incoherent screaming]

A transformer exploded outside and knocked the internet out for a while.

Nonsense. If they can catch fire, they are.

Rant: The toilet broke again.

On Thursday, I tried baking a huge cake.

I failed. My cakes collapsed. I was distraught: the work took me all day. I threw it all away in a rage, even my batch of perfectly good buttercream frosting.

Then I threw up after dinner, the exertion from the baking probably didn't help.

I'm going to have to close my bakery for a while.

Oh, this is what happened to Baking with MaryKB. :(

A very first-world problem rant:

AO3 is far superior than Fanfiction.net. Except for searching for crossover fics. Because there's a certain subset of authors who put all of their one-shots into a single fic regardless of fandom, so you end up with these huge monsters of works that have about 50 different fandoms and a tags list that takes up half the page.

And there's a decent chance that even if your interest is piqued enough to check, the chapters may not be labeled well enough to tell what they are.

More of the same apartment problems as last time. Sparing the details, it’s making me want to move even more.

However, one of the reasons I chose this apartment is to be close to work and not have to ride any busy trains.

But I also want to change the old job too, so I feel like I’m trapped because moving means at least a one year lease and I don’t even know if I’ll be working here then.

All because of what, someone wanted to eat bats? That’s why my life is like this now? 2:54 AM here, and I couldn’t fall asleep. Good thing I don’t have work tomorrow. Good gravy, this is all driving me insane.

The guys in the apartment below me really love their hookah and have been smoking it the last few nights on the balcony. At first I didn't mind because they were using (as far as I could tell) some fairly high quality hookah so it smelled pretty good, and went with the Moroccan food I was having for dinner; but now its getting a bit annoying.
When my downstairs neighbor isn't smoking cannabis and cigarettes on his porch, he's have very loud, very vulgar phone conversations there. It's sort of his jam.

As long as you figured out what went wrong this time, it'll be fine next time.

Exactly. If someone posts a crossover between the Borgias and Buffy the Vampire Slayer, I don't want two dozen other fandoms muddying it up, particularly if I've never heard of them.

At least when I write crossovers I never do more than two at a time. Sorta. I guess "Voyager Brides for Cartwright Brothers" is actually three, since in addition to Voyager and Bonanza, it's also based on "Here Come the Brides" (a TV adaptation of "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers").

Mind you, the Star Trek tie-in that combined the TV series with TOS also included a reference to Doctor Who that people wouldn't get unless they'd seen the episodes in which the Doctor stated that "Gallifrey is in the constellation of Kasterborous."

To this day, readers are wondering how Barbara Hambly pulled that novel off without multiple copyright infringement lawsuits (unless Pocket Books paid the copyright holders and didn't mention it?).

And technically, my Handmaid's Tale/Sliders fanfic involves three different works, since it's based on both the novel and the 1990 movie (which have a couple of significant differences), plus the Sliders TV series.

This is why I'm grateful that I live in a building with on-site security. While certain things are legal, there's still the clause about impinging on other tenants' enjoyment of their suites. And getting sick and being unable to breathe definitely impinges on my enjoyment of my suite.

They're not actually crossovers, though. They're collections of single-fandom oneshots that are just stuck together in one giant work because....hell if I know why the authors do it.

A more serious rant:

I'm terrified.

There's talks about loosening the restrictions of Medical Assistance in Dying so that a "reasonably foreseeable death" isn't one of the requirements. On paper, that sounds kind of good. But then here in Canada, disability support programs are critically underfunded (also, TIL that PEI is actually Anticosti Island):

None of them reach the poverty line I think. Here in Nova Scotia, you get a total of $850 a month for everything. It's difficult to even find an apartment for less than that (and good luck getting into public housing).

And so, if it's easier for people to get medical assistance in dying than it is for them to get adequate supports to live...

Are we disposible?

Yes, you are disposable. Welcome to the post-welfare state world, where one death is a tragedy but a thousand is a statistic.
