We could just have stayed with vBulletin…
In July it's hot and dry where I live and there is a large field with a bunch of tall grass by my house which is perfect conditions for grasshoppers. Whenever I go by this field you can see a wave of grasshoppers jumping out of the way as you approach. Well yesterday I drove my car to the grocery store and like a dumb dumb I rolled my windows down because it was hot. But as I drove pass the field a bunch of grasshoppers jumped through the open windows into my car. So I had a bunch of grasshoppers hopping around my car including hopping on me which freaked me out. I figured it wasn't safe to drive with me being freaked out so I had to stop several times to open all the doors and let the grasshoppers jump out of my car. And as soon as I thought my car was grasshopper free and I started driving again a few more came out of nowhere and started hopping around my car again. I must of had 10 of them in my car in total.
Moral of the story. Use air conditioning.
Would be nice if the style variations could change more than just the background colors
For that you'd need a whole different forum host. ProBoards has a nice variety, though there are other reasons why that one drives me nuts. There are some fairly basic things that aren't user-friendly, or at least the admins on the gaming forums haven't figured out how to make them user-friendly (or don't care; one of them is a nice lady most of the time, but tends to suffer from "if it's not a problem for me, it's not a problem").
Wait, Xenforo locks actual layout code so it can't be changed? Colours only?
laaaaaaaaameI don't really know, as the only other XenForo forum I know about is TrekBBS and they were able to restore the vBulletin look so well that if you didn't know that some of the previous features don't work and multiquote is a pain, otherwise it looks just like the old place (they'd have had a revolution if they hadn't been able to restore those two skins as people have been attached to them for the better part of two decades).
What I meant was that if you want different skins that not only look different in color but also in other ways, you'd need another host - probably.

Wouldn't the simplest way be to grab this existing theme, add it to the demo site and just edit it? Then save it and have it added to our choices? It's not as extreme as Valka says, if you have some underlying web knowledge, but otherwise yes, pretty much.
The easily accessible options are colour for most of the layout elements, yes, togehter with border sizes, font size, font type, link styling, and links in the header and footer.
For most elements you can also plug in a custom CSS code, in case something is not directly accessible (e.g. the navigation element home - forums - COLOSSEUM - off-topic at the top and bottom are not easily accessible, or the change of the nav bar in the Civ6 style compared to the Modern CFC style). I think that requires somewhere between basic to advanced HTML/CSS skills, depending on what yu want.
And then you may directly go into the innards of the website, which seems to consist out of a mix between HTML and something Xenforo specific, no real idea.
You can check yourself if you like, the Xenforo website allows you to launch a free demo, where you have access to everything, https://xenforo.com/demo/ .

I've realized that there's no longer a button to go directly to unread messages from outside the thread, you have to click on the thread first and then click a button in the thread to go to new posts, that's all kinda sucky
Patience grasshopper, it is not yet September! This is a pretty huge "well, duh" situation, but I was really hoping being happier would make things better physically and also improve the eating disorder a bit. As it so happens, the brain-dead advice of "Think positively and you will be cured" is not true in any way.
At any rate, it's... a challenge to have objectively good days but to be completely miserable during them because my body's failed me. And to some extent, having a good day can cause me to be miserable, because extremes of any sort are bad for me, be they negative (the norm) or positive (the new).
There was maybe a part of me hoping that I only felt so badly all the time because I was a bitter, depressed misanthrope. This has so far not ended up being the case.
This actually went better than expected. They are prepared for foreigners who don't speak the languageTomorrow I'll have the great pleasure of going to the French unemployment agency. I see no scenario which will play out well for me.
