Random Rants 92 - Not Enough Snerk

In July it's hot and dry where I live and there is a large field with a bunch of tall grass by my house which is perfect conditions for grasshoppers. Whenever I go by this field you can see a wave of grasshoppers jumping out of the way as you approach. Well yesterday I drove my car to the grocery store and like a dumb dumb I rolled my windows down because it was hot. But as I drove pass the field a bunch of grasshoppers jumped through the open windows into my car. So I had a bunch of grasshoppers hopping around my car including hopping on me which freaked me out. I figured it wasn't safe to drive with me being freaked out so I had to stop several times to open all the doors and let the grasshoppers jump out of my car. And as soon as I thought my car was grasshopper free and I started driving again a few more came out of nowhere and started hopping around my car again. I must of had 10 of them in my car in total.

Moral of the story. Use air conditioning.

Or capture them, make them dead in a non-chemical way, add chocolate, and eat.

Would be nice if the style variations could change more than just the background colors

For that you'd need a whole different forum host. ProBoards has a nice variety, though there are other reasons why that one drives me nuts. There are some fairly basic things that aren't user-friendly, or at least the admins on the gaming forums haven't figured out how to make them user-friendly (or don't care; one of them is a nice lady most of the time, but tends to suffer from "if it's not a problem for me, it's not a problem").

There's one theme I've discovered on Pond Friends that's really classy - black background and gold font. Here's a sample of what it looks like (obviously my username there is slightly different; the Test of Time version didn't seem appropriate on a forum where not many people are into Civ, yet it's still a gaming forum; btw, you don't need to be either grumpy, old, or female to post in this thread, but most of us are senior ladies - and yes, my current rank in the Pond is a Clown Frog, and I've been talking about the part of the story I'm currently writing for the July Camp NaNoWriMo as some of them have played the game I'm novelizing):

Wait, Xenforo locks actual layout code so it can't be changed? Colours only?

I don't really know, as the only other XenForo forum I know about is TrekBBS and they were able to restore the vBulletin look so well that if you didn't know that some of the previous features don't work and multiquote is a pain, otherwise it looks just like the old place (they'd have had a revolution if they hadn't been able to restore those two skins as people have been attached to them for the better part of two decades).

What I meant was that if you want different skins that not only look different in color but also in other ways, you'd need another host - probably. Or at least that's my impression from everything The_J has been saying. You were the tech guy over at IALS, so you might remember that some of the themes we had worked in different ways. ProBoards and Simple Machines both allow theme-specific smiley sets, for instance, though it's my understanding that it can be an aggravating experience to make that work properly.

Theme-specific smileys would be great, or better yet, being able to choose which smiley set we want overall. Way back about 12-15 years ago when I was most active on wenpigsfly and smileygenerator (both were smiley forums and smiley archives owned and managed by a guy named Balaam, who lives in BC), he made dozens of smiley sets and took requests. I helped a bit with the Doctor Who set he made me to use on the Tom Baker forum I co-admin'd. And on the smileygenerator forum, he'd swap out the default sets every so often (last one we used there before the catastrophic server incident was a set of spring daisy-themed smileys based on the yellow Invision style).

I haven't looked at the style sheets yet, but if the support forum has any skinning tutorials it would be possible to tell if color changes are the only thing possible or if things could be made fancier. What they add up to is what you put in specific fields, which could be an image with text, or just a color change with text. Some of the Invision styles were really spectacular.

It's not as extreme as Valka says, if you have some underlying web knowledge, but otherwise yes, pretty much.
The easily accessible options are colour for most of the layout elements, yes, togehter with border sizes, font size, font type, link styling, and links in the header and footer.
For most elements you can also plug in a custom CSS code, in case something is not directly accessible (e.g. the navigation element home - forums - COLOSSEUM - off-topic at the top and bottom are not easily accessible, or the change of the nav bar in the Civ6 style compared to the Modern CFC style). I think that requires somewhere between basic to advanced HTML/CSS skills, depending on what yu want.
And then you may directly go into the innards of the website, which seems to consist out of a mix between HTML and something Xenforo specific, no real idea.
You can check yourself if you like, the Xenforo website allows you to launch a free demo, where you have access to everything, https://xenforo.com/demo/ .

Is it only for me that all the controls on the posting box are greyed out? I can add things if I remember the tags, but the buttons to create them directly are there but unclickable. [EDIT] Figured it out, if you click "Toggle BB Code" it remembers on all pages, and greys out the buttons.

Oh, but my biggest rant is that cntl-shift V is not enabled in the reply text box. What is it with custom text boxes that block common hot keys Grrrrrrr!!!!

Wouldn't the simplest way be to grab this existing theme, add it to the demo site and just edit it? Then save it and have it added to our choices?

I assume that the floor is not reciprocating?

I've realized that there's no longer a button to go directly to unread messages from outside the thread, you have to click on the thread first and then click a button in the thread to go to new posts, that's all kinda sucky

Also the lack of the more/advanced options button in the post to go to write the post in a new page instead of right there in the thread is kinda annoying

I'm not following :/.

That's what I'm doing ;).

That should be a temporary thing. Normally if there's a new post, and you click on the thread title, it should bring you to the new post.
This seems to be an issue with older threads though.

This is a pretty huge "well, duh" situation, but I was really hoping being happier would make things better physically and also improve the eating disorder a bit. As it so happens, the brain-dead advice of "Think positively and you will be cured" is not true in any way.

At any rate, it's... a challenge to have objectively good days but to be completely miserable during them because my body's failed me. And to some extent, having a good day can cause me to be miserable, because extremes of any sort are bad for me, be they negative (the norm) or positive (the new).

There was maybe a part of me hoping that I only felt so badly all the time because I was a bitter, depressed misanthrope. This has so far not ended up being the case.

Patience grasshopper, it is not yet September!

Tomorrow I'll have the great pleasure of going to the French unemployment agency. I see no scenario which will play out well for me .
This actually went better than expected. They are prepared for foreigners who don't speak the language .

Now I wonder... how come I'm unemployed, still worked today, and didn't really have time for anything :hmm:?
