In the latest chapter in the ongoing post-apocalyptic dystopia that is public transit around here, the transit authority is going to fully shut down an entire line for an entire month, to do the maintenance & repair they should have been doing for the last... I dunno... 20 years?
The line they're shutting down isn't the line that's experienced multiple collisions. Nor is it the line that's twice had unmanned trains go coasting down the track in recent months. It is the line that had a train literally catch on fire the other week, and the line that I use just about every day.
They say they'll be replacing the trains with shuttle buses during the 30-day shutdown. Just based on my own experience, I'd guess that a city bus carries roughly as many passengers as one train car. There are six cars to each train, normally running every 7-8 minutes during 'rush hour', and they're frequently packed. So they'll need to have 6 buses ready to go, every 7-8 minutes, just to make riding the temporary shuttles as enjoyable as the usual subway trains. And those buses are going to have to drive through city traffic on the surface streets, while making stops at all of the subway stations.
Spoiler :
