Random Rants Eighty-Four: Rants Gone Wild!!!!

I wonder how many users would migrate if PornHub launched a non-porn video site? They probably have the infrastructure already.

Funnily enough, I have started seeing some Let's Plays and video game reviews on PornHub due to their much more lax copyright and monetization policy.

It must be horribly awkward to search for them though.

Yeah it is. Some of my favorite firearm YouTubers moved over to PornHub when YouTube decided to demonetize all the gun channels. Searching for them can lead to some pretty weird results.

^Gives a whole new level of meaning to ‘gun porn’.

Facebook has entirely removed chronological sorting of the comments on group posts and this has resulted in a major decrease in quality and continuity. The new choices are Relevant (algorithm wizardry that is never right), Newest First (why?), and All (which is actually Relevant). Now I get to read threads related to my industry and not know which comments were made when unless I individually note every time stamp and build a timeline in my head.

Horrible change.
I wasn't on FB much before a few months ago, so I never really noticed anything different.

It's annoying, since I consider every post worth a look once, unless the person has pissed me off to the extent that I block them. It should not be FB's call as to what is relevant.

One more reason to stop using FB.
The last time I used it for anything much was to reply to people wishing me happy birthday... 6 years ago, when a few people congratulated me on turning 50.

But now we have this atrocious excuse of a provincial government with a clueless MLA who is also the Minister of Education (think Betsy Whats-'er-name, but not a billionaire and so far not advocating that children be given a gun to shoot bears). She is that clueless about public education.

She was called out once for censoring unfavorable comments (cabinet ministers aren't allowed to do that here, unless they're openly abusive/threatening) and so most comments stay up now. It's a place where I can grouch and snark about provincial politics and be reasonably sure that most of the participants will know what I'm talking about.

I really only use Facebook because everyone else uses it and I need some way of talking to people I know for things and I don't have any other social media.
You have us. :grouphug:

I heard you can text people from cellular devices nowadays

Yeah, but the number of people I'm friends with on Facebook is much larger than the number of people whose phone number I have, and group-chatting and event-planning is a lot easier with something like Facebook Messenger than group-texts.

But there's also the special-case bonus that I've been living in the same city for some twenty years now, and so does everybody else, therefore walking down to somebody's place and ringing the doorbell to see if anybody's home is actually feasible, which in the US is impossible because everybody leaves home at ~17 years old.

Also there's the issue of geographic spread- most of my friends live far enough away from me that simply walking to their place would take too long (if I even know where they live in the first place), so why not just text them or contact them with some social media app to check to see if they wanna hang out before taking a 30+ minute journey to their place?

Oh, definitely. This is a far denser* city than your long suburban sprawls. There's also the detail particular to me that, being cellphoneless, I can simply count down an hour or two lost walking about the neighbourhood rounding people up as ‘mild exercise’ that helps counteract all the hours of sitting, as recommended by a GP last year, so hey, that's an unexpected yet welcome bonus.

*yes, Synsensa, also metaphorically

Rant: Testing a program that ended up having a giant memory leak. That wasn't fun.

Forgive my naivety, but if Youtube doesn't make a profit, then how does pornhub?

Rant: The power went out just long enough to mess up all the clocks in the house.

Rant: modern houses have way too many clocks in them.

Rant: the only clocks in the house that offer any clue as to what time it is are the ones that reset themselves.

Rant: One of my work collegues is sick and refuses to take few days off work :/ Nobody sees nothing wrong with it except me. We are spending most of the time in a small airtight room and I don't want to be sick again ! (I've been 3 times last 2 months - thank You) . Why don't people follow the rule You're sick , You stay home dammit !

Rant: I had to return a survey worth £2.25 because it told me it was full. That wasn't supposed to happen. :(

Sounds like the beginning of a Resident Evil movie.

My wife wants to get an English Bulldog, but I'm not so sure it's a good idea. The one she's looking at is only $500, which is cheap for an English Bulldog, but it's only 5 months old, isn't fully house-trained and already has medical issues that are going to require surgery to correct. Couple that with the, in my opinion, high cost of maintenance that comes with owning a dog in general and the increased cost of an English Bulldog due to the issues they tend to have, and I just think it's a bad deal and a cost I'm really not willing to bear right now.

If it's that cheap, I'd also be worried about whether the breeder is reputable.

It's not a breeder. It's a couple that is looking to get rid of the dog because they are having a baby. Which is kind of a crappy thing to do to a dog in my opinion, but that's a different discussion.
