Random Rants LXIV: Who's Acting Like a Child Now?

Well, Plato said "the wise man speaks when he has something to say. Fools because they have to say something." I would imagine that the concept of tact has been around at least as long as modern humans, though it still eludes many of us.

Oh, I show a great deal of tact in my real life dealings with other people. I wouldn't have been a very good intelligence collector otherwise. I just see absolutely no need for tact on the internet.

Nice thinly veiled insult though.

Well, that's a classic case of the online disinhibition effect then. These are real-life dealings with other people, just ones with whom you only communicate by text.

The whole point of the internet though is to be a place where people can express themselves in ways they can't in their real lives (no, interactions on the internet are not real life interactions since you can never truly be sure of who you are talking to). That's why we aren't required to use our real names or really give out any real information about ourselves. So it is quite unreasonable to ask people to act the same way on the internet as they do in real life.

I just moved into a new apartment. Whenever I flush the toilet, it makes a dripping sound for the next half hour or so. I'm playing around with it and hopefully will manage to fix this somehow or another....

The air conditioning exists and works fine, but makes an annoying hissing sound, followed by a tapping sound, when it's not cooling the apartment.

The only reasonable place to put the bed is on the wall with all the outlets. But I need the outlets and there's some prohibition against extension cords.

It is supposed to be furnished, but the couch is too low for me even though I'm really short, and I sink down even further in the middle third of it. There's no office chair, and I'm going to need to get one so as to avoid just lounging around in bed supposedly getting my work done there, but not really doing it. The bed's comfortability doesn't seem too promising either, although at least that means I won't be tempted to stay there.

There's no good place to put all my chemicals and glassware - very little closet or dresser space. This is a problem because they have an exterminator visiting once a month and possibly other people dropping by, and all anyone thinks when they see chemicals and glassware these days is meth/other drugs/explosives. If only they knew I subject places I live to almost as much danger as a meth cook would, without actually making any drugs! Actually maybe it's best they not know about that. I guess I'll just keep most of my toys in boxes most of the time... :(
And the reason you chose this place...?

(it doesn't sound very convenient, or comfortable)

A prohibition against extension cords?
If a building's wiring is old, it's probably a sensible precaution against electrical fires.

I've got extension cords all over the place here, but that's because there aren't enough plugins where I actually need them.

Still two months till academic year starts here. As a teacher those 2-2.5 months vacations are too long. I could theoretically move to a country to teach while my home country has holidays. It's unprobable, but not impossible.

We noticed.

.

Thanks, I checked it out and joined the site. Although I'm not a fast writer, I finished a novel yesterday which I started some time in January. My last novel came out in early 2015, so I feel like I have actually accomplished something. I still want to finish another story till end of this year.

By the way, if it's not a secret, is there any place I can read your NaNoWriMo results?

It took you only half a yar to write a novel? That's not exactly slow.

If internet app doesn't lie, NaNoWriMo wants me to write 30000 words in a month. That's 88 pages in 12 Arial font. Or 3 pages in a day rounded up. Sounds a lot to me, considering a novel can be as short as 150 pages. Edit - wiki says anything over 40000 words is considered a novel.

Well, unless you're going to delve into solipsism, you're still interacting with real people with real emotions, even if it's not face-to-face. I mean, if you want people to think that you don't care enough to employ even a modicum of tact, that's your business, but I doubt many people would agree.

Nor do I expect them to. My goal on any internet forum isn't to get people to agree with me. I use the internet as an outlet for all my random thoughts so I don't end up saying something in my real life that could actually have some consequences on my life. I mean, if I hurt someone's feelings here, big whoop. There aren't any real consequences beyond that person not liking me. I hurt someone's feelings in my real life social interactions, and that could come back to bite me in the butt in numerous ways depending on who it is that I offended.

So he's allowed to rant, but I'm not allowed to rant about his rant?

I wasn't aware that we all needed an approved reason to express ourselves. When did this become a thing?

So I'm supposed to suppress my opinions and rants just so someone else can feel comfortable expressing theirs? Well that doesn't sound very fair at all. Especially since you are making me feel uncomfortable about expressing my opinion right now.

Is this not a rant thread though? Aren't all rants welcome? What you are saying is that my rant isn't welcome simply because you don't like the content of it. You are also saying that my rant isn't valid simply because it makes someone else feel uncomfortable, while also turning around and making me feel uncomfortable about expressing my opinion.

To all of the above:
Life lesson 2: If you are going to share your problems with the public, you have to be prepared to face criticism for the way in which you share it and even just for the mere act of sharing it.

Well, you have ranted before that you think people on CFC tend to think the worst of you in any situation. If that's true, the above might just be why.

I only point that out when people try to deny that they always think the worst of me when it's obvious that they do.

So you only like talking with people that will tiptoe around your feelings instead of being honest with you? That says a lot about your character.

To all of the above:

The whole point of all those posts you quoted was to point out the hypocrisy of criticizing me for giving Phrossack a hard time when that's precisely what they were doing to me. Either everyone should be open to criticism or no one should. You can't say some statements are above criticism while others can be torn to shreds. At least not if you are interested in remaining ideologically consistent.

Logically those cases are equivalent to someone using violence to assault someone and someone using violence to stop him.

Life lesson #3: People are as nice to you as you are to them.

So you only like talking with people that will tiptoe around your feelings instead of being honest with you? That says a lot about your character.

Honesty and tact do not have to be exclusive. Then again, if we're psychoanalysing anonymous messages that don't exist in the real world, since you feel that it's 'big whoop' if you offend someone online, that says volumes about your character too.

Life lesson #3: People are as nice to you as you are to them.

A lesson people here at CFC could really heed. I wasn't always this way here. In fact, I used to be one of the more pleasant members here. I stopped being pleasant though once I realized that CFC was nothing more than a pack mentality that attacks and ridicules anyone who doesn't agree 100% with the majority opinion. This community has become nastier over the years since I've joined.

I mean, even when I've tried to reign it in and not be so confrontational with people here they still get nasty with me. Apparently "forgive and forget" isn't a very popular concept around here...

It may be, and sometimes you just get crap on you no matter how nice you are. The remedy isn't to be rude though, since then you're guaranteed to get crap on you every time.

It doesn't need to be even about explicit rudeness, just being in good mood makes people like you, and being gloomy works the other way around. I've also noticed (irl) that people who are gloomy and defensive often perceive situations differently. They take innocent remarks as insinuation etc.

It's less than a block from the building I work in, and I didn't know about the assorted minor annoyances (toilet dripping noise, rain dripping from decks above, etc) until after move-in. It's overall not bad, I'm just complaining about the minor problems because complaining about minor problems is what we're supposed to do in Random Rants. ;)
