Some Canadian provinces are really going to bat for the renters. On the other hand...My landlord announced their aid package. They are going to let some renters who are laid off defer up to half of their monthly rent for up to 6 months. So if you paid half of your rent in April, you'd have until October to pay that back, interest free. They are not giving this aid to renters that are month-to-month, which I guess means they are trying to force people into long duration leases with this crisis.
It's better than nothing but it's kind of pathetic to be honest. Or am I off on that assessment?
In Alberta, the premier says we're supposed to rely on "compassionate landlords." This is the ex-federal cabinet minister/illegitimate Alberta premier who once claimed his MP's housing allowance while simultaneously claiming to be living in his mother's basement, though she lived in a retirement facility that a) didn't allow sublets or roommates, and b) didn't have a basement.
It's hilarious to see the image he's projecting on the news now... jacket off, sleeves rolled up ... that's exactly the thing Justin Trudeau has done for years and for which the Reformacon/UCP supporters have relentlessly mocked him. He's shoehorned himself into the daily briefing by the chief medical officer (she's more popular now than he is).
Looks like Jason is trying to improve his image, because he has to know that if it weren't for this virus keeping most people at home, we'd be out in the streets protesting and some would be striking.
Rant: I can't get through to the telecom company to resolve a billing dispute. They're trying to charge me twice for internet/cable, when it's actually covered under my rent, per the lease I signed a couple of months ago. I should only be paying the telecom directly for phone, the extra channel I subscribe to, plus tax.
They've cut staff, of course; everyone has, but the alternative offer is to "talk" to the 'virtual assistant' which would either get me stuck in voicemail hell or I'd spend 10 minutes guessing which keywords it recognizes. In the meantime my blood pressure would be going up and I'd want to reach through the phone and rip its virtual head off.
