Sounds like a bit of an annus horribilis. Well, here to say that a friend of the family, the son of a very very close friend of my grandmother, died 7 hours ago of cancer. To be honest, I knew it since months ago. He had seemingly recovered and then BAM! Cancer strikes back, and the seconds the charm.

God why, he was barely in his 40s, he was such a good person... his mother goes next, of course, she was truly attached to his son, and she was with him all along and she lived to see him live lately. That would be devastating, I know her and love her as a third grandmother, and it'd be hard to lose them both in a short time.

Earlier today I went give my condolences to the family. I saw the corpse and, for the first time in this kind of occasions, I was about to cry. Because the body looks so young and so dead, like a lifeless doll. And he was so alive, so dynamic, so kind... It's unbelievable. Tomorrow I'll be attending the funeral.

My wife got a raise a few weeks ago and even got backpay because the raise was supposed to go into effect at the beginning of the year but the funding wasn't in place for it till recently.

Everyone thought it was a great Christmas bonus, until today they found out that HeadStart is cancelling all Christmas paid vacation. Because the schools are closed over Christmas break, there is no way for the employees to make up that lost pay.

So they all got a raise but lost all of it and then some due to the paid vacation cancellation. I suppose that's how they decided to fund the raise, by cutting salaries elsewhere.

The way this important, effective program is underfunded is pathetic.

The same the world over... teaching, right? I think you mentioned it before at some point. They've been cutting funding for that here ever since the last change of government. People undervalue education Our Minister of Education doesn't even have an education in education (just a masters in the arts...)

Yeah HeadStart is a federal program that provides preschool to poor children. Problem is that conservatives hate it and want to cut it and even liberals don't see to it that it's adequately funded.

It really helps these kids keep up developmentally with more advanteged children. That is, when they can even attend HeadStart after they've cut things like the school bus and put up other barriers to access.

My wife loves her work but she gets paid half as much as she would for the same job at a traditional school district and has to work harder for it.
