More than half the income goes to paying the power bill due to arrears that don't even belong to us. (Before I was born, or maybe shortly after that, my mother moved out of an apartment where she was paying the power. She turned off the power. The new tenants turned the power back on in her name. They didn't pay. The power company won't write it off even with the old rent receipts proving the fraud. The bill is over 20 years old.)

hm. so do i. and i'm not bothered by it.

EDIT: i get so much money that it bothers me. all that money, and nothing to spend it on.

SH! Don't make the conservatives think you're a welfare bum!

*sigh* there are stupid people everywhere.

It doesn't help that the power company keeps raising the rates every five minutes, it seems at times.

Retroactively?

@Mathalamus: I hope you can donate some money to the Takhisian fund for the reconquest of Constantinople then, we aim to restore the Empire.

No employer wants me.

I don't know if it's retroactive. Its still hard, though.

I tried.

Not even something low-level like a grocery store?

I said I tried. They're swamped with applications as is. Somebody who can barely speak or walk and forgets their own name? Not a chance.

Have you tried date-entry jobs? Large institutions frequently need someone to enter data into spreadsheets and other online forms. From what I can tell you definitely know your way around computers and have the patience to put up with jobs like that. I don't know what programs Canada has for disability hiring but Minnesota has quite a few programs and organizations that people with disabilities can work with to get a job that fits their skill set and specific needs.
These jobs really don't require you to do much human interactions and really depend on you managing time and staying on task. I'm sure you could spin having to deal with your mother and other financial issues as a 'helping to foster independence' set of skills. (Plus, the sheer amount of work you spent on compiling Tom Petty information might come in handy here as you clearly know your way around search engines and research while keeping things organized.)

Has your mother talked to a Lawyer? It doesn't cost a thing to make a phone call and ask questions and depending on your situation, you may find certain lawyers to be very helpful. The stereotypes about them aren't all true, case in point:

I was hurt on the job (minor injury that required some stitches) and my employer had insurance. They told me it wasn't a problem and I went back to work that same day. 2 years later after I had long since left that job, I started getting calls from bill collectors. My former boss never filed the paperwork for his insurance to pay the claim and dodged the bill collectors for 2 years. So they finally came after me and started making threatening phone calls.

I called a lawyer in town and explained my situation. Worker's comp wasn't his specialty and he was only going to get a very small fee for it if we won. So small of a fee that it wasn't worth it to him at all. But just hearing my story and the dickishness of my old boss made him take my case. We won, and when I got the check, the lawyer didn't even take the 20% he was entitled to by law (and he had even driven me around to go to court, filed court papers, etc). He just said merry Christmas and that he was happy to stick it to a jackass - my former boss had to pay the medical bill +$200 in damages to me.

Point being - have your mom call a lawyer if she hasn't already.

My rant:

T-Mobile. Screw T-Mobile so goddamn much. They have been charging me for handset protection for 2 years on a phone that I did not want protection on. I did not want or ask for this protection because it was already an old phone at the time they added protection. To make it worse, they've been hiding the charge within my bill so I didn't even know I was being charged. They only showed the insurance charge for the one phone I asked for it on - I have no idea where the other charge was showing up on our bill. I only found out about it because I went to cancel the insurance on the other phone and they told me I had it on both. WTH

This is the second time they have completely mislead me in this way. My contract is up in December and that won't be soon enough.

So I was going to paint my new apartment and I was also going to build this really awesome hanging shelf. Well, we asked permission to paint the apartment and they want $750 for a nonrefundable deposit to 'paint it back'. The thing is that they charge double rent the first month as a nonrefundable deposit so they can paint it back already. Plus, with us painting it when we move in, that saves them having to paint it then and they'd only have to paint it when we move out, which they are going to do regardless and for which they have already taken a deposit.

But they want more, because they're greedy effing bastards. I offered to paint it back myself but I don't think they'll be ok with that.

As for the awesome hanging shelf (built-in lighted DVD rack, a mini-bookshelf, hanging hooks for sunglasses and keys, a bill/junk/important mail slot(s), covered spaces to hide our crap, etc, etc) I was going to go all engineer on; I don't think I will do it now. I knew they would never agree to it so I wasn't going to ask. But given how greedy they are, I know if I built it that they'd rape me with fees as soon as they saw it when they come to change the smoke detector batteries.

I'm pretty bummed out and now I got to figure out where to put all our stuff since we can't build the shelf. Plus, the shelf would actually add value to the place (my father-in-law built a house so he knows how to help me make it look professional) but I know I couldn't sell them on it despite this fact.

Also, since I've come back on CFC I've posted that I don't think Iraq is necessarily a bad thing AND I talked about Napalming children and no one is even trolling me. I'm very disappointed with you, CFC peoples.

I'm on social assistance. I get a bit more than average due to the disability but it's still not very much.

I tried to get my mother to call a lawyer but she won't. She also won't accept any charity because she's more stubborn than me. Not to mention just today she got caught up in yet another scammy work-from-home scheme. I think in one of my mental health files it said something along the lines that I have difficulty retaining things that I learned from experience; I actually wonder if the wrong person's name is on the file.

To be clear, I got extremely lucky that the lawyer worked for me on charity (and I was not told it was charity until afterward). Most lawyers won't, they'll gladly take their cut from whatever they win on your mothers behalf.

Would it make you mad if I told you that your mother is stupid? I don't mean to offend, but she's stupid. You are living on government assistance, which is government charity. Refusing to call a lawyer because it could be charity is just plain stupid when you're already depending on it (even if she doesn't directly receive it, you do and that defrays her cost of housing/feeding you)

I hope things get better for you.

I already know that she's stupid.

Life sucks.
