Random Raves : Tank Goodness

Just got back from Malibu where I lived in paradise for five days while my partner and I would drive into LA to do more studio work. Our song is sounding good. We are now at a juncture: do we pay an independent promoter to get our music on the radio, risking big money for no sure outcome, or do we start playing the indie musician game and self promote?

I'd rather spend the money if it's gonna work.

From the consumer's side, I can tell you that getting music played on rotation (see Cutlass' thread from a few months ago) is a bore.

That was a fun trip. I hope to be back at some point, America and New Orleans. Too many things I have not seen yet.

Can you afford to lose the money? If yes, what have you got to lose?
Hard to say: at present I don't have the money. It's more, can I afford to risk my social capital like that in raising the money and then losing it. It'll be something we'll have to decide soon.

Except most people prefer it, which is why stations do it. Most people want to hear about a new song every week or two.

Credit is just another form of money, imo. But taking a risk with "future money" is something that I'd personally be more cagey about.

A new song every couple weeks, yes. The same 'new' song being played over and over, please no.

Spoiler :
Is there any way to predict how successful you can be? I can't decide to start the Late Night Show with you if you're just a country bumpkin, I need a famous DJ to boost my ratings!

Radio 1 is probably the best at giving the people what they want. A new song 3 times a month for a pop genre means listening to the same few songs over and over again.

BBC Radio 1?

I used to listen to that. But I'm way out of that demographic now. I find it un-listenable.

Half the rock on it sounds like it came out the 60s or early 80s.

That sounds more like Radio 2 than Radio 1.

As far as I know, Radio 1 is firmly aimed at 12 - 25 age range. Though I was listening to it when I was 45.

Some of the chat by the DJs is appalling. Is that Chris Moyles still on it? edit: Nope, apparently not. Awful man! Maybe I'll start listening to it again, then.

It's 2015 so things that are meant for 12-25 are secretly meant for 25-55. :p

My partner and I got our song mixed by a top industry guy. We're waiting on the file to make the next move in trying to get our song played on Radio 1. In the meantime we entered a remix competition for Andy Grammer's "Honey I'm Good" which we are having good progress in.

I might need y'alls votes for the ladder in a couple weeks. :cowboy:
