Sounds to me like the newspaper had a few spare columns that needed to be filled that day.

TOILETS CAUSES TRAFFIC JAM

BEIRUT - A stir was caused Friday in the French protectorate when a truck carrying new toilets suddenly came to a halt, spilling its porcelain contents out into the city’s busiest intersection. Motorists and passers-by, French and Arab alike, were bemused by the dozens of half-broken toilets strewn about, and were further nonplussed as many auto-mobiles attempted in vein to circumvent the obstacles before them. The situation was finally resolved after a dispatch of officers agreed to help remove the toilets. The local constabulary reports the truck driver was fined 10 francs for littering.

JERUSALEM, Nov 16 (Reuters) - An 86-year-old great-grandmother was crowned "Miss Holocaust Survivor" on Tuesday in an annual Israeli beauty pageant designed to honour women who endured the horrors of the Nazi genocide.

Ten contestants - ranging in age from 79 to 90 - trod the catwalk at a museum in Jerusalem, their hair styled and make-up applied and dressed to the nines with sashes adorning their gowns.

I read and re-read the contents and thought “what’s wrong with it?” Never once thought to look at the headline. Now I see it.

Maybe if they hadn't been mucking around with needles, they'd have had more success.

The correct spelling is "vain."

Both articles were pretty bad. I think the newspaper in question must have had a low budget and couldn’t afford to hire people with proficient English skills.

The Zoom meeting for one of the online seminars was today, and it went ok. A positive was that at some point I went into an indifferent trance and pronounced 20 words/second or something. Obviously this doesn't at all mean I was saying something of significance or complexity, just was talking fast and without being nervous. Which is a positive of sorts.

Can't say I like Zoom meetings.

My brother-in-law had to conduct his lectures on Design via Zoom in Sydney last semester.
He found them very tiring, much more than pacing around at the front of a lecture room.
He said it was almost like the weariness he gets when interpreting from French to English
and vice versa.

It is easier to talk to people, if you already have given a speech to the general group and they are returning - although I never lectured in an actual amphitheatre...
Stage death can be horrible, although if you at least control nervousness you can soldier on and avoid complete shutdown. In my case, with these once-a-month Zoom meetings for one of the seminars, I just don't see the point, so have to fake thinking I am actually providing something by talking (they have 85.000 words of the seminar to read, what good will one hour of talk do). Usually it is passable.
