So you witnessed the robbery and said nothing in the old woman's defense?
By this point the manager should have been called, the video reviewed by the manager, and if they refused to make things right with the old woman, the police should be called. Not that they shouldn't be called anyway about the theft.
There's a difference between security in stores and mall cop security. Things have become a bit distorted due to covid and the social distancing rules that some places still insist on, even though the premier struck those down.
The current issue going on in stores here is the rise in self-checkout and then some stores insist on checking receipts at the door to make sure people haven't stolen anything. This, coupled with the fact that plastic shopping bags aren't legal for stores to use now so the customer is responsible for bagging/boxing their own purchases, has resulted in a nightmare.
Customers are not legally required to submit to these searches unless the store has reason to believe that a theft has occurred. Store personnel are not allowed to restrain or even touch a customer. The only times when receipts have to be shown is when the customer has agreed to do so when they joined some sort of membership agreement allowing it (ie. Costco).
Walmart has been pulling this for years. This 'we need to put tape over your bag' when you're walking into the store so you won't slip anything else into it is tantamount to saying, 'you've just walked into the store and we think you're going to steal from us'.
Then this 'we need to look in your bags'... holy crap. One guy was even about to open my containers of takeout Chinese food, and at that point I lost my temper in a rather spectacular way, telling him to get his filthy fingers out of my food, he did NOT need to search my bags, and get away from me. If he had actually opened my food containers, I would have gone to the manager and insisted on being repaid for what would have become contaminated food (that I'd bought in the food court).
When it comes to security in these places, I wonder if they give everyone a reading test and hire the ones who fail. One day I walked into Walmart, and security immediately wanted to inspect the banker's boxes I'd purchased... from Staples, that were still in their original wrappers. They mumbled something about "making sure" and I asked them, "So you're suspicious that I'm walking out of here with items sold at Staples, that are clearly marked as a Staples product, that are still in the original packaging, and I'm walking INTO the store? Go call Staples - I bought these about 10 minutes ago."
