Is it rational to devote your life to pleasing some being whose nature, disposition and very existance you have no real proof of?

Protestant Christian - Liberal.

My Mom's family is mostly Catholic, but my Mom joined the Quaker Church when I was two.

My step-Dad is an Athiest, my Dad is Agnostic.

My Great-Grandpa was a Methodist minister in Oakland, CA and Spokane, WA in the first half of the 20th C.

I'm not a Mormon yet, getting baptized in a few weeks just waiting for friends that I want to be there to finnish up what they're doing(one if tree planting)

I asked about the christianity one cause seems to me they are very different from the rest of the christianity based religions

Hey Esckey mind if I PM you some things about mormonism including my own experiences?

I was a mormon for 19 years and I would not recomend anyone become one.

Baptised Catholic, but I quit my membership at sixteen. The local clerk back then had to check his law-books before allowing me to. Obviously, I was his first case to ever do so. I had to pay about $8 fee to have myself out of the Catholic community. (As if eternal condemnation wasn't enough of a punishment for this act :p )

Seriously, religion is far too important to be left to some professional corporations. Labels are good for the industry or for advertising, but not for spirituality.

It's fun to read through the old scriptures of any religion. (If only from a historic/cultural/humanist POV.) But I would not take any of these stories for granted, as long as I don't see the point in it. They are all man-made and therefore subject to criticism.

My sympathies go to the Taoists first, then maybe to the hinayan Buddhists and JC.

I feel that I am a rather religious person, but talking to people from diverse religious denominations, they all call me an atheist or an heretic - whereas I'd call them superstitious.

You're right. There are three: Catholicism, Orthodoxy, and Protestantism. I am sorry I didn't mention that.

Acctually christianity can be divided into many "groups."

The largest three are:

Roman Catholic
Eastern Orthodox
Protestant (Anglican, Lutheran, Reformed, Baptist, Episcopalian, etc.)

Others Include but are not limited to:

Coptic (mostly in Egypt)
Nestorian (mostly in the Middle East/India)
Monophosite (mostly in the Middle East)
Armenian
Anabaptist (Mennonites, Amish, etc.)

Many Christian churches consider themselves to be "free churches," not part of any such groups. However, they generally tend to be some form of Protestantism.

Then there are other "sects" that consider themselves Christian but really have very little in common with historical Christianity. Mormons and Jehovah's Witnesses are the best known of these groups.

I could go on at length on the differences between these groups, but that's well beyond the scope of this thread. :)

p.s. if you haven't figured it out yet, I'm a Christian. :worship: :jesus: :worship:

Agnostic, with strong atheist tendencies.

'None of the above' - or below for that matter.
Atheist, I've decided.

I am a Christian. I am a member of the church of jesus christ of latter day saints (mormon). Im glad to see other fellow mormons here at the forum.
@Andrew: Why wouldnt u reccomend anyone becoming mormon? I recon u have haid some bad exampels or something inside the church but there are always bad exampels in all churches but thats no reason to quit... I had some doubts about the church but I got "over" it... Its the hardest in the youth...

Catholic, very apathetic about it though.

Ahhh Sir John the typical response "Someone must have offended you" or "What commandment couldn't you follow"

I don't want to go into much detail on this thread because it would be very rude for me to slander a religon in public like this. But if you would like the details I'd me more then happy to PM you.

BTW, before I left I was a very devote member, no caffine, no rated R movies etc..... Very active and temple attending, it was the church I had a problem with.

Also if you'd like an idea of why people leave

I know that too, I was just talking about the three main ones. Isn't Anabaptist a Protestant sect as well? And aren't Armenians Catholic. I thought I heard that it has the oldes Catholic community or something like that.

An another topic, who knows a lot about Jehovah's Witnesses? One of my best friends is one, and I wanted to learn more about it. It seems to me (and no offense meant at all) that many JW would leave the faith once they turn 18, just because it is so strict. How does it compare with Mormonism? What's the history of it?

JW is much more stricter then mormonism.. ofcourse there are things u arent supposed to do in mormonism as well, but u dont get shut out of the family if u arent a member and such...

Andrew: Yes, pleace pm me.. I really cant see a good reason to leave the church other then simple lack of faith...

I'm not too familiar with JW's, but I do know that exmormons and ex-JW's do keep in contact so to speak. From what I have gathered they are both somewhat similar. Later American religons that are very strict and have a cultish feeling.

If I was going to follow any of the strands of Christianity it would be either a Quaker (but I couldn't give up wine, so....) or a Cathar. Be quite cool to be the only surviving follower of a religion exterminated in the 14th century!

until then you'll have to put me down as an agnostic. No idea if there is a god or - if there is - which religion's god that is, and no idea how anyone else thinks they can answer that question with any degree of confidence.

@andrew: I know for a fact that the main part of the JW community doesnt want to have contact with people who has left the church or isnt a member... (unless theyre willing to convert)..
