[R&F] Rise and Fall Screenshot discussion

That one wonder is really bugging me. It’s certainly Islamic architecture, but it lacks the minarets you’d expect from a mosque. It has crenellations and is certainly fortified, but it does not look Moroccan, so won’t be a kasbah.

The blue dome suggests a central Asian or Persian caravanserai, but the fact it has a coastal feature throws that off too.

The closest I could find are Huzrat Ali's Mosque, Ezra's Tomb, and some near the
"Lapis Lazuli regions" - Afghanistan, Iran, Iraq, and Samarkand - but nothing
with exactly those crenellations.

That mysterious blue domed building... It is probably a Feitoria; but would it be a "generic" Feitoria, available to all Civs or a reference to a Portuguese Civ?

Leaving that aside, why a Feitoria? Let's start with the... Orange trees! From the Wikipedia entry comes this very interesting info:
As oranges are rich in vitamin C and do not spoil easily, during the Age of Discovery, Portuguese, Spanish, and Dutch sailors planted citrus trees along trade routes to prevent scurvy.

So that would explain why there's citrus alongside fortifications. Now Feitorias weren't only factories and trading posts. They were also (in West Africa at least) Slave trading ports. That smaller building that leads into the dock would be the slave holding cells, for example. But that's my personal conjecture.

Lastly, some photos, that help the "Feitoria" hypothesis but still doesn't help with the "Generic or Portuguese" hypothesis. My references for this argument are the Elmina Castle (already mentioned here) and the Al Mirani Fort.

Either way, if it's really a Feitoria, it greatly supports either the Portuguese or Dutch being among the 8 new Civs. In my personal opinion the Dutch are in, since Brazil already is and two new european Civs would be too much. And that's unfourtunate because Portugal really deserves a spot since the main theme of Civ VI is "Exploration". Oh well...

What do you guys think?

I have trouble seeing the Feitoria in it because of the architecture. Your points are well made, but the building with the dome seems to have three iwans, which, according to my knowledge were not used in Portuguese architecture. And the walls of the Portuguese forts that I know of look very different - they aren't that vertical. And I'm missing some typical design elements that make it distinctly Portuguese, like the little 'towers' on the wall etc. I think a unique improvement should scream the name of the civ to you when you see it, and this one doesn't.

Yes, that is correct. That's why I called the "Generic" Feitoria, available to all Civs. BUT, that architecture does not rule out Portugal, since they had Feitorias in the Persian Gulf. Yep, they had a presence in the region for some time, so an architectural influence would not be that out of place.

It's very confusing...

The expansion will only contain 2 new improvements for all. Those are connected to the governors and known already.

Possible, but wouldnt that be listed under "new improvements" too? :p

Probably, though I suppose there's a small possibility that an existing city state and its UI got "promoted" to a full civ and that the resulting "extra" UI is from a new/reworked city state.

La Venta will hopefully never be upgraded. A Nasrid Granada civ seems unlikely as well. And does anyone want a Northern Ireland civ? So, while hopefully some CS will be exchanged because of them becoming major civs, it‘s unlikely for the ones with an UI.

I'm hoping they replace the amalgamated Celts with a specific Celtic civ, like Ireland led by Brian Boru, which would certainly involve Armagh.

No hints of potential new civs though (though the base game's intro video depicts Bean as a winged hussar, which eventually led to the Poland civ).

Lol, nope...nothing looking very much like Mongolia at all in that trailer :rolleyes:

A dark horse is an unexpected candidate who wins. America has always been represented by Washington, Lincoln, or (once) FDR--so Teddy Roosevelt was an unexpected choice. I recall quite a few people being skeptical that they actually selected him until the First Look confirmed it.

I always found it strange people thought he was a dark horse - they defaced a mountain and put 4 faces on it and he was one of them - he's not exactly obscure.

Civ had seemed to settle into a pattern where the American leader was either going to be Lincoln or Washington. VI gave us one Roosevelt (and was apparently considering adding the other); but once V turned it's back on multiple leaders I can see why the Lincoln/Washington monopoly looked set to continue.

Civ IV had the other Roosevelt.
