Saddam Hussein Hanged

Considering that it was an Iraqi court and not an American one that tried, convicted, and executed Saddam....

Anyway, I am just glad it is over.

Well, Im guessing that the court was organized under an American-friendly system...

The outcome could be diffrent depending whoever controlled the court.

I don't think Hussein should have been hanged. To be honest, I felt quite sorry for him in the end.

What is it that you are saying? Do you mean that there is credible evidence that Saddam Hussein did not order the deaths of hundreds of Kurds during his reign?

This is part of why I think hanging is wrong (apart form a general dislike for any capital punishment, and a distrust of the legal process which convicted Saddam). We have now managed to get to the position where some Westerners will feel sorry for him, and many Arabs will view him as a martyr, rather than having contempt for the murdering scum that he really was.

which is exatcly why, whatever one thinks about the death penalty and the court, anyone should see why all trials should have been finished first!

This day was going to happen anyway.

I knew he would be executed the day they cought him. And if i remember correctly, a certain CFC member said they wouldnt be able to convict him at all.

Who was that? :mischief:

There are 17 year-old girls which are hanged in Iran because they've cheated on their husband they've been forced to marry when they were 13 years old.

I must confess that it makes me feel more remorse than the death of an outdated megalomaniac murderous dictator. That makes one less on earth. It doesn't change much over all but don't expect me to be sad about this.

Fortunately, I'm not saddened by all that I disagree with.

They've just made another martyr. Just look at this farce - Saddam holding Koran, praising Islam and shouting "down with the West", then refusing the hood and showing no fear of death, like some kind of noble prisoner of conscience. I think he will be remembered as a Muslim hero who resisted the West, at least among Sunnis.

His execution is the dumbest thing they could have done, especially in these days (you know, Muslims have that annual party in Mecca). They should have let him rot in prison, instead of making him a symbol of anti-Western resistance for generations of Sunnis.

Stupid!

If they had had half a brain left in all of Iraq, they would first have finished all court proceedings in all trials. This will help noone.

Exactly.

  • Rot in prison: Symbol to rally around and hope he can come back to power someday.
  • Dead on gallows: Martyr to rally around.
It's a wash either way, so why not just say it was up the the Iraqi government and they did what they deemed appropriate.

About time. Rest in peace, Sadaam.

LOL ;)

There are 17 year-old girls which are hanged for no particular reasons and others raped several times then murdered so don't expect me to be sad about your 17 year old that cheated on her husband...
You'll always find worse in the variety of moral values thoughout the world and its cultures. If there is one thing that stays it's : the killing of somebody when it could've been avoided.
Going into sordid comparisons is not my cup of tea, and has nothing to do with the victim beeing Hitler or Mother Teresa, or would you suggest different levels of pain in the execution depending on the crimes like in the good old days ?

Martyrs are much more dangerous than old men rotting in prisons, at least in the Middle East.

And, you forgot these dictatorships, absolute monarchies and one-party states:

Kuwait (al-Sabah)
UAE (al Nayhan)
Saudi Arabia (al Saud)
Oman (as Said)
Syria (Assad)
Turkmenistan (Niyazov)
Myanmar (junta)
Pakistan (junta, Musharraf)
Uzbekistan (Karimov)
First, it was a list of anti-American leaders, so Pakistan and Kuwait are omitted on purpose. (While they may pay lip service to us, we at least have the ability to stop them from junking up the works.)

Second, Abdullah (Saudi Arabia) is there, Assad (Syria) is there, and Than Shwe (Burma) is there. Niyazov is already dead, so he doesn't get included in my list.

Third, Karimov and the others are small potatoes; I'll be happy when they croak, but the list is more or less designed to encompass those that are radically anti-U.S. and anti-Western civilization in every way.

Why is Mandela on this list? Actually, which Mandela do you mean, Nelson or Winnie?

Nelson Mandela is respected in many places around the world, and I can't think why he should be included in such a list. His ex-wife, Winnie, however, is another story -- although I confess I'm not up on the details.
Read the history of when he was head of the MK, that should change your opinion of him. I'm not even going to mention all of the stupid things he's said ("Long live Fidel Castro?") and done (selling arms to Syria and Rwanda, among others) during his leadership of the ANC.

The defence rests your honour.

then why do you mention them?

Also, because he said 'Long live Fidel Castro' he must be a terrorist, anti-American and should be hanged ASAP without a trial, right?

Isn't that unjust? If he was punished righteously on Earth, there shouldn't be a punishment for the same crime in heaven. Double punishment is wrong. And an eternity is far too long for ANY crime, no matter how big it may be.
No, it's not - two punishments for two harms. He hurt man by killing man, and he hurt God by killing creatures that He created in His image.

As for an eternity being too long, I think Saddam has been, or will be offered as many chances to repent as could conceivably make a difference. And yet somehow he didn't repent, and probably hasn't still, and I don't expect him to ever.

But yes, back on topic.
