Scouting!

As I said, when I was attending meetings, we did meet in the upstairs of a church, but the church and the group never mixed. Outside of the "reverence" part of the oath, religion was never mentioned.

My brother was briefly in the scouts for a short time, back when I was about 10 or so.

I just kinda laughed my ass off at the whole thing, because I saw what crap it was, even then. Quasi-fascist rabble rousing.

The only reason my brother joined was because of the box-car racing. When he lost, he ditched it. Good for him.

And by the way, scouts, not just the leaders, will get kicked out if they are gay.

Strip away all crap like gays and religion and the scouts is preaty cool. The motto is on point and the skills taught are handy. Its to bad all other bull gets in the mix.

Quasi-Fascist? Do you people know what that word means anymore? Geez!

I had a wonderful scouting experience, from cub scouts to my Eagle award at 18. Gays and God werent much of a factor, and I was in a church troop. We were all about the outdoors and community service. It was great.

Eagle Scout with silver palm.

Philmont 2002 and 2004, Northern Tier 2006.

All in all, scouting is easily the most fun and most rewarding thing I've done with my life.

Darn you! Beat me by one palm!

I did beat you to Philmont though, 2001.

Thank goodness for summer camp!

Ah, before the fires. Lucky.

I went through Central and South both times. Where did you go?

Central, North, Valle Vidale, and the South.

Our original trail was only supposed to go to Central, North, and Valle Vidale but on the last day we got lost and travelled into the Southern Section. Definently the most beautiful place I have ever been.

Curse you all and your palms....
I got my eagle scout the day before I turned 18 :)

what did you guys do for your projects?

My troop had an "Eagle Scout Minute" at the Court of Honor. At mine, I challenged any of the younger scouts to beat me...I was 16 and a half at the time. My friend became Eagle just before 17 (he also has a silver palm) and said that Eagle before 17 was worth trying for. Well, a year later, another friend was addressing the crowd at his court of honor, grinned, and said "Irish said we should become eagles at 16, Monty (not his real name) said before 17. I say, as long as you're not 18 yet, you're doing alright!" Everyone laughed.

This is Spring 2002, where pretty much everyone has had their flag on their house since mid-September of the year before. Most of these flags had become pink, gray, and violet. I worked with a local veterans' group to collect flags that needed to be retired--we put up bins at local supermarkets, schools, fire stations, town hall--while I went on a tour of elementary schools and talked to audiences ranging from a fifth grade class to the entire student body about flag etiquette and history. It ended with a retirement ceremony on the town common.

I probably helped over a dozen friends on Eagle projects, which ranged from building stairs to ramps to benches to a fairly substantial bridge, as well as building a trail here and there.

I went to cubs twice (I think thats what they were called) the whole atmosphere put me off and I never went back.
