Is there any chance of it being reenabled soon?

EDIT: Forum search re-enabled after moving the site to a new server on June 6th, 2005!!!! :)

I don't think they'l enable it. Or if they do, you'll be banned from it. :p :smug: (j/k)

Is it disabled for everyone, or is it only disabled for non-mods? I understand why it shouldn't be available to everyone, but if you have a good reason for it, I don't see why it shouldn't be allowed temporarily for that person. I seldom need it that bad, but there was a post in a civ2-forum by Andu Indorin collecting Starlifter's and Andu's thoughts about Power Democracy that otherwise would've been impossible had it not been for search.

Enabled for mods of course.

I understand the issue has something to do with the search function's unpredictability - sometimes it's fast; sometimes it slows down the whole forum etc. I also understand we're waiting for the system to 'settle down', before looking at reenabling it...

I just thought I would mention it, I expect it is so obvious, that is why noone else has thought to mention it, but someone may not know.

You can add the term site:forums.civfanatics.com to google, and then the terms you want to search for. This gives you a search on this site only. It will be a bit out of date, but is pretty handy.

It has been mentioned before but not recently so its a useful reminder. I haven't tried it since I rarely want to search the forum anyway so I don't know how effective it is.

I will consider re-enabling search this weekend. But if the server still has problem handling it, we may need to disable it again.

Sounds great... :goodjob:

i suppose the more attachments we delete the better chance of search staying up?

Should we delete attachments from old democracy games or should we leave the images in those types of threads which people may still read?

I doubt that would help much. vB 3.0 apparently uses more server resource than vB 2.x.

You never know it might work if the search is constrained to searching every 5 minutes or something and we did have a servre upgrade a while back.

How about 1 search per hour? That wouldn't propably cause problems... except for searchers. ;)

I was going to re-enable search last weekend, but I was mass mailing members and didn't want to enable it then.

I will re-enable it this weekend. The minimum time between searches probably will increase a bit to once every 5 minutes... Thanks for your patience.

PS: Making this thread a sticky for now so we don't get too many duplicates...

Hey Thunderfall, how about just adding the Google search box (per site:forums.civfanatics.com) to the top of the forums. Even out of date searches are better than no searches. Have seen other forums do just that and it provides at least some basic functionality.

Bummer that vB3 seems more resource intensive. I really dig vB3. Anyone chatted with other folks using VBulletin to see how they have resolved the issue? (I know that Strategy First also uses vBulletin and offers searching - though they probably have more resources to provide to the system).

Cheers.

I will consider doing that Oddible.

Anyway, forum search is re-enabled for registered members now. The minimum time between search is increased to 300 seconds (or 5 minutes). Hopefully the server can handle it... I would hate to turn search off again...

I will add the Google search box to the forum if we do turn search off again.

Will the Google Search work as well as the regular search?

I am going to be needing the Search, unless I want to go digging through old Model Parliament threads, of which there are several . . . that seems like an excessive waste of my time.
