Shooting at Montreal University

I understand that Igloo and because of you and the classes I took on the subject this summer, I know a lot more about firearm todays. I'm even getting around the idea of regulated weapons (pistols, revolvers) as something acceptable for someone to have in its home (for sport shooting). But automatic weapons, or any of the prohibited weapons in Canada (Machine Gun, Automatic Rifles, Bazooka you name it), shouldn't be in the hands of regualr people. There's just no justification for it. No matter the restrictions.

I'm not sure where and how the shooter got his hands on his weapons. Not sure of the exact nature of his arsenal either. In no way do I blame our neighbors for the shooting. The nutcase in question is the guilty one. But the love, love for weapons that he had is a lot more common and encouraged down south. I don't understand that love at all. Why in the world would anyone in their right mind want to own an automatic rifle?

First of all, I cant find in any story thus far where the weapon is identified as being an automatic weapon as opposed to a semi-automatic weapon. So, why do you assume that it is a fully automatic weapon?

Second, I cant identify the weapon in the photo (assuming thats the one he used) but it definitely isnt some CAR-15 knockoff. It looks more like a G3 type of varient to me. Any ideas Igloo?

Third, you have as much stated that his weapon came from the "blackmarket" in the states. Is this just pure assumption, or do you have any proof of that?

I was watching tv all afternoon yesterday, following it live in the local media. Students told the media that they saw and heard automatic weapons. I took they word for it. I'm not sure what he had. I said it too.

Question for Igloo, so why second to me?

I also said: I'm not sure where and how the shooter got his hands on his weapons. in the post you quoted.

The point sysyphus made, and that I agreed with, is that the black market for weaponry in Canada is mainly consisted of illegal importation from the United Staes. Now don't get all angry over this Captain America. I also stated that I'm not blaming anyone but the shooter for the tragedy.

I know, I wasn't trying to argue with you about the justification of having one (obviously we disagree, but I don't think either of us feels like getting into it), just pointing out that they're not very lax about them on this side of the border either.

@MobBoss: I'm a pistol gun-nut, not a rifle gun-nut. ;) I agree that that is certainly no AK or M-16 derivative, but beyond that I've no idea. And the article pboily linked to explicitly states "automatic" several times, leading me to believe that it isn't your standard mainstream media "assault weapon" which is usually a semiauto-but-scary-looking rifle, but actually capable of full-auto fire.

According to CBC, his main weapon was a Beretta CX4 Storm semiautomatic rifle, whatever that is; he also had two other weapons, presumably handguns of some kind.

Pathetic. White North American Male (like me) can't get ahead? how much more opportunity does one need.

Sometimes its hard with reverse discrimination. And just because your white doesnt mean your rich.

So really its the same playing field if your not from a rich family. Or worse with reverse discrimination.

Bizarrely, this is actually a legal weapon in Canada, as long as you don't have a criminal record (which the shooter didn't).

How is it bizarre? Its just a fancy looking pistol.

It's a semiautomatic rifle, suitable perhaps as a police force's heavy armament, but completely unnecessary for any private citizen to own.

Thats your mistake. Some kid in school, under stress due to the shooting, is hardly going to be able to tell a semi-auto from a fully automatic rifle. I bet I can shoot a semi-auto in such a fashion that it would sound automatic to a kid in that situation. To people who dont have any clue, all weapons that look like that are automatic weapons.

Since no valid news source covering the incident so far has said it was an automatic weapon, any such assumption is very premature. As Igloo stated, the chance of it being a fully automatic weapon are very remote.

Question for Igloo, so why second to me?

I was commenting that the weapon does not appear to be a semi-auto rifle commonly available in the USA. The point was that I am not convinced that your assumption that the weapon came from the USA has any proof behind it.

I also said: I'm not sure where and how the shooter got his hands on his weapons. in the post you quoted.

But in previous posts, y ou also referred to the "black markets" and "love" of such weapons in the USA.

Not being Captain America here...just separating baseless assumption from fact is all. Dont like it? /oh well.

Well, very nice find. So its not an automatic, nor has it been "smuggled in" via the "gun loving" "black market" down South; but probably bought locally in Canada....IF..that was the weapon used. But considering his pics weilding this, thats pretty likely.

All of which makes the following quote even more funny.

We know of course where these guns come from, the same country that always claims our lax laws pose a security threat to them. Of course, count of Harpercrite the Sycophant to not raise the issue.

reverse discrimination is a crutch made up by white men who can't take responsibility for there own failures.

BTW, don't you have algrebra homework Xanikk! <j/k>

EDIT: wow, fancy gun, shooter should've taken his gun money to kinkos and printed out some resumes.

Its not a rifle. Its a carbine. Think of it as a long gun or short rife. And just so every one knows semi-automatic refers to any gun you dont have to cock and chamber between every round. A 6 shooter can be semi-automatic. A heavy armerment weapon? It uses pistol ammo. You realy don't know much about weapons. This is realy good for hunting and home deffence.

More laws? The alread tight ones didn't do much. Are you saying all firearms should be banned? Do you realy think that will stop people getting shot?

Well this is an arguement for more stringent gun laws if I ever saw one....

Actually, I was thinking it may lead to more stringent video game laws if anything. If his sole reason was some sick attempt to actually reenact a video game he was playing, its not going to be the gun that gets the most attention...

Would you call a gun like this a submachine gun?

Can guns like this be easily modded to fully automatic?
