Should Private Citizens Be Allowed To Search Each Other?

This, if actually applied regularly (like through random checks at roadblocks or whatever), would basically make the jobs of taxi drivers impossible. Doesn't it?

Why would any taxi driver even think you might have drugs or a weapon on your person?

Is that a serious question?

Yeah, and? Other drivers don't make a living off driving random strangers around.

I'm sorry, I'm not understanding what you are trying to say.

I think it's the difference between saying:

1. show me your pockets if you want a ride

and

2. let me physically strip search you.

You could probably do #1 as a requirement for entry into your car.
#2 would probably be indecent!

If the law really states that a driver is responsible for all items transported in the car, then really, you should not offer rides to strangers, but instead call for assistance for them.

Now the girl really had no idea the guy had these things on him and the police officer told her that she could be arrested as well since the owner of a vehicle is responsible for everything in the vehicle.

Is this even true?

I have people over at my place all the time, I have no idea what they've got in their pockets. If the cops bust down my door and find drugs, weapons, or stolen ancient mayan artifacts in their pockets, am I responsible for that stuff?

Why? I'm not going to pat down every single person entering my house, that would be silly. (I'm assuming that car and house are interchangeable here)

A taxi cannot refuse service. Yet what if you use a taxi to move drugs/weaponry/small children?

Am I being trolled? Why would you think a taxi driver would be held responsible?

Why would a taxi driver not be when a normal citizen is?

Also, please stop accusing every comment of being a troll, that is against the rules.

I'd love to strip-search some ladies I've seen strolling around town. :groucho:

Am I being trolled? Why would you think a taxi driver would be held responsible?

Because we were discussing a rule that says the owner is responsible for everything in his or her vehicle?

Actually, this brings up another good question--say the driver is a 20-year old son or daughter, borrows the car from the parents, and has tons of drugs in the car when he or she gets pulled over. Do the parents have any responsibility? Technically, they own the vehicle, but the offspring-in-question is a legal adult.

Well if we are taking that hypothetical, wouldn't all companies that employ drivers become responsible?

I think life is a troll.

But the law says you not responsible. Why do people think you are responsible?

Mate, this is a frigging hypothetical, we are imagining if the laws were different...

I can tell how misleading the OP and the Title of the thread was with the "?" being at the end of it... ¬¬

Then the driver can refuse service.

Then the driver can refuse service.

But how will the driver know you are consealing weaponry, or have drugs up your bottom?
