SimCity 5

I agree the cities are going to develop far quicker but if you are playing with multiple cities in a region and controlling them yourself I guess that would be the weeks and months aspects that we all knew in SC4

That's true but if you want to create a huge and sprawling metropolis that looks realistic you should probably stick with SC4.

Btw: I was surprised how well my computer could run the game, my XPS 420 is quite old and I could run it on max settings. However I should say that the graphics are not that great (could use some better AA) and my cities were small.

The cynic in me says the 1hr time limit is there to hide a problem, and that could just be slowdown as your city gets a decently high population. The more fine-grained simulation should make it much more resource intensive. However multi-threading will help a lot, especially in a game like this where there will be many tasks that can easily be run in parallel.

Well, I took the plunge to the tune of $80. Here's hoping it's good since the jackasses didn't let me in the beta :dunno:

$80  What the hell did you buy??

The past 16 games I've bought haven't even added up to more than 50 dollars, I can't imagine spending 80 on a single game!

Game prices on release are getting jacked up higher and higher these days.

I remember when my dad bought my CivIII for $20 more than a decade ago, and I thought *that* was expensive! Then I remember the days when $50 was considered way overpriced.

And now SimCity 5 has set a new precedent, I think... I don't think many games these days are priced over $60.

$80 is the Digital Deluxe edition. It has the British, German, and French city widgets.

And I am a terrible person for supporting such a price point

For shame.

Seconded.

But I myself, me and my friend (we both adore SimCity 4), we'll probably wait until it's at least 50% off (which might be never or at least a very long time), because frankly just $60 alone for the normal version is pushing it for me.

Man, I remember the good old days when $40 was considered expensive.

When I started paying my own way for games $50 was standard for a full game and $30 for expansion packs (US), then after a long while they went platinum (on Xbox anyway) and could be had new for $20ish. Last physical game I bought was TES IV: Oblivion GOTY fifth anniversary for $30, course it did have a $10 thing for Skyrim so $20 really and it had a nice metal case.

AlpsStranger, congratulations on supporting puppy kicking.

In fairness to EA I think a lot of things besides games have gotten more expensive in the same period.

EDIT: Though in fairness to you guys I don't think most things have gotten 3x more expensive. At the same time, I think the production cost for SimCity2013 is probably 10 times the production cost for SimCity 4.

I remember seeing SC4 for $80 at Target when it first came out.

Seriously?

I must have lived in a place where video games were cheap or something. Either that or my parents didn't take me shopping enough.

I'm on the fence with this one.

I only played SimCity 2000, and I loved it. At the time (~1997) it ran really laggy on my computer, but it was still worth it. I spent far too much time with the game :)

But I've heard a lot of bad things about the DRM requirements for SimCity5. I get that people are upset that the game is going to require constant pinging to the Maxis servers, but I'm not sure I feel as insulted by that as some people. After all, this is the direction everything is going in - for better and worse.

If given a choice between playing online or not playing at all, I'm leaning towards playing online. In a perfect world there would be an option for offline, as with Steam games.

Financially, the wife will flip if I spend $80 on a "video game" "Is not! It's a sim-u-la-tion!"

If the game were $50 on Steam, I'd do it on day 1. But since it's not, and it's not, I'm going to have to wait.

But I think I really like the art direction and overall production feel. Reminiscent of the model trains of my youth.

Don't feel bad, I feel as much a sucker for putting down $60 for the game, knowing full well EA's reputation with Maxis games.

Tell me about it! I still find games that are 50 dollars expensive, probably why I only buy stuff during the Steam sales for 75% off, or the rare 50% (Chivalry was worth it).

My hope is that it captures the more whimsical feel of, say, SimCity SNES and the original SimCity.

I would also enjoy a "crunchy" followup to the SimCity2000->3000->4 line, but this obviously isn't it.

The sheer personality of the SNES version still impresses after all this time.

My whole family ( Mom, Dad, Sisters, etc ) just about beat that cartridge to death back in the 'day.

Same here. Not only am I a starving college student, most of the money I do earn has to go to medical bills, so I barely have any money left for fun, so what little I do I spend on steam sales (or other internet sales) that are usually 75% of 66% off (though occasionally I've gotten 50%, though I feel guilty about it). Unfortunately for the new SimCity I'm gonna have to wait a looooooooooong time before it drops down well enough.

I'm in the same boat cybrxkhan, same boat.

Though if it stays Origin exclusive I might not ever get it, which is even more disappointing considering how much I loved Sim City 4. Oh well...

Yeah I know :(

One can always dream though...
