SKNES: Architecture of Aggression

With the Pope dead, and the second crusade of his cooling down, the new Pope Benedict of Venice was chosen as the first non-Roman pope. His victory was not as amazing as some may have assumed it would be, the late Pope showed much love to Venice with their great support of both crusades.

Yet the Venetian Pope, Benedict, was far more peaceful. He declared that the second crusade was over, and he hoped the blood spilled would forever stand as a warning to all those who wish to slaughter and kill the followers of Christ, Catholics or others.

Pope Benedict was also somewhat different. For years as Bishop he led the extreme missionary activity in Savoy, eventually bringing the Catholics to become a majority that demands its king to follow to true path. He also sent managed missionary activity in the southern Frank lands together with Bishop Marcus of Aquitaine. He saw the success of such peaceful means, and decided to move away from the wars and into a new era, that of peace.

to all Catholics:
The crusades have been not highly successful yet I believe the Catholics have made their claim strong. Yet now, whenever times look good for the followers of the Lord a new evil rises, this time again from the east These Tatar beasts are to be defeated by the nations of Christ in battle, so our missionaries could defeat them in spirit.

ooc: Only complain I have, is that I truly thing the MOD has something against the Catholics winning :p everything goes against us... 25 years and the ships didn't learn to deal with Greek fire?
Also Papal lands in Greece, should be made Venetian.

...how? I mean, seriously, how did that not succeed? :gripe:

Long story short, your defeat by the Tatars basically meant that there was no help to the Crusaders from the north, and Epir took much longer to conquer, meaning boom goes the west flank. I do commend you on your plan though.

EDIT: @Erez: Sorry Catholics,I swear,I didn't bias it :p Just bad luck on the RNG.

I'm pretty sure I should have more swordsman companies, seeing as I trained 4 and raised a conscript through words out of Orthodox refugees.

Gamez: Hey, that’s what your orders said

Well it's not like I had time to actually write decent orders. :p

Hm...Yeah, Armenia should have 6, not 4.

I'd like some feedback and critique on my modding as you have seen so far. Is there anything I'm doing wrong? Anything I can improve on? My goal is to make this NES fun and enjoyable to play for everyone, how am I doing at that? If there's anything, I'd like to fix that ASAP.

Nope, I'm enjoying this alot... My only Issue is the conflating the "Dark-Ages" with an actual decline in Science and Cultural development: The first universities in Europe were built during the so called Dark Ages. The Term Dark Ages, IIRC, comes from the Renaissance trying to associate themselves with the Classical World, and arguing that anything that came between them were worthless.

Also, weren't two of my siege companies destroyed? I only just built two last turn, and those were the first ones I had.

Regarding your modding, it certainly seems fine enough to me. You're keeping some realism intact, by punishing actions such as the great paganization of Byzantium, but not to the extent where it's not fun or enjoyable. Of course, do bear in mind that this is the first NES I've actually stuck more than two updates in, so a voice of experience, I am not.

Did I lose any crossbowmen or swordsmen this turn? Because the ones I built don't seem to be in the stats.

I like your modding style. You aren't too rigorous on realism, keeping things interesting - there is no way that the conversion of Byzantium to Hellenic Paganism wouldn't result in a spontaneous overthrow of the Emperor. However, the consequences for player action are still there.

By Thor's Might, Freya's Council, and The All Father's Will is it that we rule over these Lands of ours. We Propose to unite our two Royal Lines to ensure that the will of the Old Gods is not threatened on this earth ever again. I offer my Daughter, Alfhildr, in marriage to your Eldest son, Hakon.

ooc: the Byzantines are the only problem I have with this. As in the fact that the RNG gods seem to favor them :p

I expect to get RP & orders in friday.

We accept. Let the union of our bloodlines last a thousand years!

I'll reexamine stats tomorrow, when I'm less lethargic than I am now.

You are defeated. Only the timely intervention of the Tartars has saved you from destruction. However, the let none say that the Vandals have no mercy. We will sign peace with your country, and leave you in peace, if you will acknowledge our conquest of Crete and acknowledge the Vandals the rulers of Crete forevermore.

Sorry for not sending orders, but I was on camp with no internet access whatsoever and didn't have time to send anything in before I went. It won't happen again.

Mod style is great. So much these days do we have mods who want to make the players follow their idea of the way history should happen. This is a breath of old-school "let the players play" fresh air, if you ask me. Everything that I believe a mod should be doing you have done, and everything I think the mod should stray from you've strayed from.

@Sam- Your navy should have been crushed last turn, to be completely honest. 25 years of aggressively seeking out your navy only resulted in the death of 2 dromon groups. That was ridiculous.

@Erez- The crusaders still hadn't found a cure for greek fire the last time the crusaders attacked damietta in the mid-1200s. Why would you have learned to fight it in the year 800?

EDIT- I should have more cavalry.

Long response post time!

I'm pretty sure I should have more swordsman companies, seeing as I trained 4 and raised a conscript through words out of Orthodox refugees.

Fixed. You now have 6. (I think that's correct)

That was it I think. IIRC though, the oldest universities though were built in the 1th-13th century, after the end of the "Dark Ages" (which, in my view has always been mid-11th century.
Don't take my word for it though.

Also, weren't two of my siege companies destroyed? I only just built two last turn, and those were the first ones I had.

Fixed.

And don't forget to update the update and story library. ;)

Doing that after I finish this post.

That's fine. You are excused ;)

Fixed.

Thank you to everyone who has responded :)
NPC diplo on the way, but I'll update the OPs first.
