SKNES III: Bullets with Butterfly Wings

To: Hanover
From: The Kingdom of Prussia

We must agree with the Saxony-Bavarians. The increasing Republican sentiment, and the illegal overthrow of the Hanoverian government is just that, illegal. Prussia asks for the return to normalcy, or we will be forced to intervene and return the proper government to power.

To: The Sublime State of Persia

From: The Delhi Sultanate

We would be pleased to hear any modification you would like made to the following proposed treaty (such as the name or the parts included in the treaty).

The Persian-Delhi Pact

Article one: Both nations undertake to maintain peaceful and friendly relations between them and mutually respect the territorial integrity and inviolability of the other nation.

Article two: The unclaimed lands to the north of Persia and Delhi shall remain independent lest both nations come to an agreement.

Article three: If either nation enters into a conflict with a nation not included in this pact, the other nation shall remain neutral in the conflict or side with the other nation of this pact.

Article four: This pact shall remain valid for five years. If neither nation denounces the pact within one year before the expiration date, it will automatically be assumed that the pact shall remain valid for another five years.

We would also invite Russia to weigh in upon the pact, perhaps they may even want to be included?

Also, we would like to facilitate discussions concerning the lands mentioned in article two.

No. Not steel. Not for like 30 years.

Edo, Japan

1850 will likely go down in Japanese history as a watershed year, thanks to the declaration and passage of the Hitokoku Act by the Togukawa bakufu. The act established several additional treaty ports in order to allow Japan the economic and technological fruits of trade with the West, while preventing any excess western influences from entering the country. The Russian government and traders were granted the treaty port of Sanjima in Hakodate. Independent traders from Britain, France, and the American Republic, unaffiliated with their respective governments were granted the treaty ports of Kuroshima in Naha, Anjima in Kagoshima, and Shirojima in Chiba, respectively.

Dejima War

The Dutch government protested that the opening up of Japanese trade to other powers, particularly Russia, was in violation of the 1639 treaty, which the Dutch claimed made themselves the only power allowed to trade with Japan.

OOC:
I've tried to find reference to said treaty and all i find is a stipulation allowing Dutch trade while the island closed itself off to all other foreign trade (in particular the Portuguese who had assisted the Shimabara Rebellion). I have not been able to find any treaties stating that the Dutch were given monopoly over foreign trade.

Obviously I'm involved in this whole Japanese/Dutch thing diplomatically and before i get into it too deeply, I would be very appreciative if any of the more historically competent players could help me understand what exactly was signed in 1639.

Nope. The Dutch actually didn't even have the exclusive right to trade: this was shared with Ryukyu, the Ainu, China, and Korea. They were just the only western power allowed in Japan after Shimabara Rebellion, in which the rebels were largely Christian converts.

Define 'allowed'. Allowed by the Japanese or by the treaty?

From: The Sublime State of Persia

We agree to the terms stated in the Persian-Delhi Pact. The Shah is more than willing to discuss the lands mentioned in Article Two, and is open to the idea of Russia joining the treaty as well.

Signed,

Shah Muhammad al-Din of the Sublime State of Persia

From: Sergei Obruchev, foreign minister to Her Imperial Majesty, Tsarina Alexandra, of Russia
To: Stadtholder William VII of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands

After conferring with legal specialists in commerce and contract law, we have come to understand that the 1632 treaty signed between the Dutch crown and the Japanese Shogunate does not preclude trade between Japan and foreign powers. Your attempt to monopolize trade in Japan is both illegal and disruptive to the region.

Furthermore, by acting militarily to prevent Japan opening trade to Russia, you are actively acting against the well-being and prosperity of the Russian people; you are effectively declaring war on our commercial interests. This is not something we can ignore.

We insist that you withdraw your forces from Japan, return all lands you have conquered and reestablish cordial peaceful relations with Japan. Should you refuse to do so, Russia will take appropriately balanced action to secure its trade interests in the region.

To: The Delhi Sultanate, The Sublime State of Persia

While we applaud your dedication to peace in the region, and we are committed to cooperation with both your nations. However, because we are already committed, politically, militarily, and financially to bringing order and rule of law to the central Asian khanates, many of whom are already Russian protectorates, allies, and clients, we would not be able to sign your agreement- precisely due to point #2.

To: Spain
From: Morocco

The agreement signed between France and us was created through the own free will of our sultan, exercising his rights as the leader of a sovereign state. We do not look kindly upon Spanish interference in our independent foreign affairs.

If it's okay, I would like to join as Florida.

Welcome!

To: The League of The Rhine
From: The Kingdom of Prussia

We would like to invite you to send delegates to, and join the German Customs Union.

From: League of the Rhine

We will certainly send delegates; however, we wish to wait until the Hanover situation is resolved before determining whether or not to outright join the German Customs Union.

To: Hanover
From: Saxony-Bavaria

We have been monitoring the events in Hanover closely. We protest the illegal imprisonment of George V and demand the immediate release of the Hanoverian Royal Family to either Prussia or Saxony-Bavaria.

To: Whomever it may concern
From: Hanover

Our proud Republic will not restore the corrupt and repressive monarchy in any form, altered or not. However, we shall release George and his family to whichever country they choose to emigrate to, provided that George and his family agree to forever renounce all claims to the throne of Hanover.

From: Hanover, League of the Rhine

An agreement has been reached; later this year, one of the issues that will be voted upon when the League's central government meets will be whether or not to admit the Republic of Hanover into the League of the Rhine. We are making this announcement in the interest of avoiding alarming any of our neighbors should the vote to admit Hanover pass.

To: The League of The Rhine, Hanover
From: The Kingdom of Prussia

We cannot accept Hanover's illegal government, nor can we accept the annexation of Hanover, by the League. We will be preparing to institute the legal, and recognized Hanoverian government, once again.

I would like to drop China to claim the League of the Rhine

It is odd timing with the above but I've made this intention vaguely known to others so it shouldn't be too shocking :p

Please forgive me for switching so soon. I request to play as Peru instead of Florida. I thoroughly evaluated, and feel it would be too difficult and non-engaging in SKNES if I was to play as Florida.

To: Kingdom of Portugal, Brazil and the Algarves
From: Republic of Spain

There is currently certain tensions between our two nations because of problems with our territories, as well as potential problems with shared borders.

These problems can be solved easily, though. Agreements can be made, and treaties may be signed. Both your nation and ours are, unlike our neighbors to the east, conscious and willing to hear the will of the people in regards to the most important affairs. While it is true that you are still a kingdom, and that we are a republic, these differences are superficial when compared to the most important things, on which both of us are too similar.

We hope that you are amenable to accepting a treaty by which we can eliminate any problems we might have, now and in the future, as well as help each other against nations that desire to impose their will on us.

We expect your answer soon.

To the Republic of Spain
From the Empire of Brazil

With regards to European, African, and Asian affairs, this dominion will defer to the judgment of Queen Isabel in Portugal. We will abide by any agreement that the Portuguese Crown chooses to sign with regards to those areas.

TO: Hanover and the League of the Rhine
FROM: Austria-Hungary

As it stands, the annexation of Hanover into the League is accepted and supported by His Majesty's government. We are concerned over the controlling nature of the German Customs Union in this matter, and over the usurpation of the King of Hanover by his people, and thus for the security and stability of Central Europe this annexation must go through hastily. You have the support of Austria-Hungary on this matter, unless the circumstances and political scene diverge radically.

To: American Republic
From: Tejas

We demand that you hand the traitor Ramirez back to us, to face a proper trial for his crimes against our President.

How often, monsieur, have we proclaimed ourselves champions of democracy and liberty? How often have we named ourselves chief among the peaceful nations on God's Green Earth, where brothers in mankind can come together to build the Kingdom of Heaven? Though we have said we have no need to go overseas in search of tyrants to destroy, do not confuse that with timidity. We are armed with righteous purpose and the blessing of God, for he has decreed that we are to make plows instead of swords, until such time swords are needed.

You have usurped the natural and constitutional rights of the Tejan people in your power grab. The laws you swore to uphold have been violated by your assumption of dictatorial powers in the aftermath of Ramirez's attempted coup d'etat, and the American Republic cannot tolerate it. The spread of autocratic rule, from Louisiana to Tejas, is a spear heading towards the heart of our nation, and allowing liberty to be vanquished on our border would just be a precursor to the imminent demise of freedom within our homeland.

You will end your emergency powers and hold immediate elections, free and fair as determined by international observers. Otherwise you threaten to throw the Republic of Tejas into a bloody and preventable civil war.

In pursuit and support of democratic peace across the North American continent, it is the official position of the Dominion of New England that actions must be taken to restore peace and order within the Tejan state. Dubois has violated his rights as a democratically elected leader, and his suspension of the democratic process is a grave violation of the trust placed in him by the electorate. In defense of liberty, we join the American Republic in strongly urging Pierre Dubois to peacefully relinquish his ill-gained despotic powers, and hold elections forthwith. The American Republic has our full support on the matter.

First release the ex-general Ramirez to the proper authorities of the Republic of Tejas so he can stand trial for his illegal and treasonous actions, then President Dubois shall agree to end his emergency - and may we remind you, temporary - suspension of our constitution, and hold elections.
