Skyrim - The Elder Scrolls V

Yeah... a first person game with a controller instead of a mouse and keyboard. Think I'm gonna pass on that one chief ;). What I'll do instead is deal and get over it until a decent UI mod is released, then all my problems will be solved.

I totally get some people's problems with a controller and if you're not used to it it makes sense. For me though, unless I am playing online in a first person shooter on the PC (where KB+M is required IMHO), the lack of that pixel pin point accuracy does not really matter too much nor does it really affect my level of play. Especially in this game. I am fairly accurate with the stick anyways.

Other than the minor accuracy issues (keyword, minor, i.e. negligible for this game), the buttons seem more natural and convenient and I can comfortably play from my couch without wires. This is true in most games, even single player first person shooters. For instance I preferred the stick in Bioshock and Borderlands as well; with a controller I feel that my hands have more natural and easier access to all the various buttons I need to press.

Also my mouse is not the smoothest scrolling thing in the world so looking around appears much smoother with the stick; not really keen on buying a new expensive wireless mouse. (My gaming PC is hooked up to my TV and I do everything on it from the couch.)

There are a few useful tweaks in this article, like FoV, self-shadowing and the mouse stuff I posted before.

EDIT: Also lol at some of the modes already on SkyrimNexus. No Spiders, a mod to clean up and make the females less dirty in appearance, some visual tweaks, see Earth from Skyrim (seriously?), and borderless windowed mode.

What's with the white outline on some of my weapons when I am in a dark area? Is anyone else seeing that?

At the moment I think Skyrim is a horrible game and should never have been released on Steam.

Because now that everyone is rushing to download their copy the steam servers are cracking under the load, my other steam downloads have slowed down to a crawl. Stop buying and downloading this game you lemmings.

The graphics are great, the frame rate is decent and I haven't been bothered by anything yet.

And I do hate the fact that I can't see my character in the equip screens.

I hear you, although I usually go in third person and face the character when I fiddle with his equipment to mitigate that fact at least a little.

I actually activated self shadowing, and most importantly, I put the Field of View to 90 or 95. For the first couple of hours I was playing I felt something was wrong with my vision until I figured out it was the FOV! With the default FOV it seems your are looking at everything as if you'd be zoomed in, I'd often resort to third person to "back off" from the objects or the corridors or the walls I was trying to look at. Changing the FOV helped quite a bit.

Haha no spiders mod is out already, that's awesome. I remember on the official Skyrim forums there were some users asking about it before the game came out. I guess they are severe arachnophobes and can't even play games with them if the spiders look too realistic or detailed. I'm happy they can now enjoy the game.

These "Radiant quests" are ****. The normal quests in this game are great but the random ones are terrible. My first random quest for the Companions made me beat the crap out of the priestess in the temple for no explained reason. So much for the honor all of the members of this faction are always talking about?

Having seen a computer that's basically my rig (same processor/video card), albeit with more RAM (6 to my 4, but I very nearly upgraded to the full 8 anyway on the day I bought it. Probably just will do it when I get Skyrim), play Skyrim on High at what appeared to be perfectly legitimate framerates, I am now very less worried.

Still can't play it til december (monies are low, and my mother's desperate for Xmas gift idea being given to her before december 23, so I agreed to that small sacrifice XD.

Well, that, and I have NaNoWriMo then exams.

Did the removal of classes also remove the major and minor skills? There doesnt seem to be much in ghe way of RPG mechanics left...

Too bad, you are missing the best thing since Morrowind.

Good lord the interface is terrible to use with mouse/keyboard. As in, you can basically ignore the mouse completely and just use the keyboard. sup, direct console port. I like how it looks though, and the whole favourites thing is nice.

It's also running pretty smoothly on my 2-3 year old machine with it defaulting to low.

If you are afraid you can't run it on max, you could always do this:

Is that some kind of cel shading mod or does the game look like that on min details ?

It must be a mod. Except for the guy's face it actually doesn't look too bad hehe. Or maybe it's just someone who had fun with photoshop?

Apparently the 240,000 people playing at the same is like a new record for Steam that is more than double the previous one. And Skyrim seems to outsell MW3 on Steam. I hope Skyrim somehow outsells MW3 across platforms, just to send a "big sprawling nonlinear games can also appeal to masses of people", but I don't know if, when including console sales, we're in the same ranges of sales for the two games.

Anyway, I've played so much Skyrim in the last two days that my major finger of my left hand hurts this morning and I don't know if I'll be able to play it all day again :scared:

Never seen FOV in one of my games before, or at least knew what it did. What's the best setting for it?
