Smilie Mafia - Sign-ups [Small Mafia]

question about rules: what is MVP?

in please :D

aaah I absolutely love that ones: :eekdance:  :trouble:

I'd like to join. I've only played mafia previously through SC2 (and apparently unlike most people here think that transparency in the rules governing roles is paramount... don't know how the game could be played fairly if only 1-2 players knew of the arsonist's ability to kill everyone he has doused simultaneously, for example). Anyway, I can put aside that I guess; at least his method of play gives enough time to actually discuss things (in SC2 the "day" is 1-3 minutes and the night 1-2!). Also not sure about "Everyone having mason/mafia-style night-chat," but w/e.

What's the fun in knowing all of the roles at game start? The whole concept of this game is uninformed majority vs. informed minority. One of the mafia's most powerful tools is their knowledge of information (and is sometimes ironically their undoing - see Perfect Information Syndrome).

I had a feeling this would be a point of contention, so I was mentally preparing my arguments already. It is actually ok for me that all data is kept from the player (except current roles and mafia partners if applicable), essentially like the first time I played the game, but it is when some have an advantage because of playing some particular strain of mafia that the others haven't. For example, maybe it is typical for you guys to play with a SK. If everyone knows that, except for the two new players who just joined the thread/game, then everyone has an unfair advantage on the two "newbies." As such, I like to have a list of all roles and what they can do; however I also like to not have the games completely determined. Ie, if I were to make a game for 15 players, I would have 18 roles, or several roles repeated (like citizen) and some roles not be in the game at all this game (ie arsonist is a possible role, but it turns out is not in this particular game, but could possibly be in the next).
Even with this, the standard method of uninformed majority (townies) vs informed minority (mafia) without any "X player is dead! He was the blimp pilot!" and all players are scratching their head wondering "WTH did the Blimp pilot do???"

We don't really play with roles in quite the same way on this site. You can look at some of the Role PMs for previous games as examples. There's a lot of variance between games; no two games are the same (as opposed to somewhere like MafiaScum, where basically the only difference between the games is a different title).

This site's mafia scene is similar (and many of the people who play on this site also play there, and vice versa).

I see where traius comes from. I play a similar line of games where you know what the roles are going in. It allows for some finesse and prevents some awkward situations.
