Somewhere out there is a killer asteroid with our name on it.

I counter with "How to use asteroids as stepping stones to the stars"
In summary, PERMANENT is for developing outer space on a very large scale, rapidly, by using materials already in space -- asteroids near Earth and/or lunar material -- instead of expensively blasting up from Earth all the materials used in space. After all, the Europeans who settled America didn't bring their bricks and cement from Europe...

Killer asteroid? Nah, something like that has already happened, and they wouldn't hit us the same way twice. They'll know we have our asteroid security screening going and get us some way we don't expect...

As long as beating this killer asteroid involves Liv Tyler, it sounds okay to me...

"Sorry, no one here by that name, please return to sender." :)

Well, we do name stars out there for like 19.95 http://www.starregistry.com/ so I have no doubt that someone has likely named our killer asteroid. So, its just a matter of time until the earth is destroyed by "Gertrude Smith" or some other name.

Face it: we are doomed, I remember when I talked about tsunamis and every one that I was a dumb quack, now every one cares. We need more money in space research before it comes.

We need more money in develloping space regardless of the presence of absence of killer asteroids. If there's not a working space colony in orbit by the day I die... :gripe:

Also, surface-based giant Lasers. Not only would they help deal with the asteroid issue, but they'd have a great deal of utility when in comes to sending things into deep space.

Actually blowing up a asteroid just makes it more dangerous.

Why don't you just like, shoot at it with a little spaceship, so that it breaks up into smaller pieces, so that you can shoot those, until all the small pieces are gone?

I think deflecting the mass would be a better idea than breaking it up and increasing the size of the impact area.

The problem is how would you break it, to begin with.

You don't: you spot it nice and early, give it a gentle nudge and watch it miss by a million miles.

We're now entering a stage where the private investor can contribute to space development. Whether you're a customer of Bigelow Hotels or sponsoring a Space Elevator team, little contributions will go a long way. (I linked the Saskatchewan team, because we all know they're going to win the next contest)

What a waste of time. If something like this hasnt happened in millions of years why is it worth the investment in the near future?

In 1000 years it probably wouldnt even be an issue regardless because of our technology, and theres no reason why a disaster like this would happen now if it didnt millions of years ago RECENTLY.

It did happens millions of years ago.

Geological studies have revealed numberous mass-exctinctions in the history of the Earth, which coincided with Asteroid impacts. - What the hell do you think happened to the dinosaurs?

Did you not understand my post? I already know that.

Dude.. i know that!

If it comes to us, we should blow it up or divert it away from us.
