Spl01 - Noobish Players Try the Concurrent Format

That's always the problem.
I've done some analysis so far. Pholkhero's save looks the best, but it was achieved using 5 extra turns, and could probably be achieved by the other saves with more turns. I also notice (unless I missed it) that besides my save, we dont have any settler... I just seem to like my save more for continuation...

My analysis of the saves:

Time:

Splime is in 480 BC, Pholk is in 380 BC, Frank is in 480 BC. WTF, Pholk?

Technology:

Splime is 7 away from writing, and has already aquired archery. Pholk is 7 away from Iron working, with no writing. Frank already has writing (no archery) and is 26 away from code of laws.

Iron Working (Pholk's advantage) is nice, as the iron is nice for production (if we have any) and it leads to compass. Compass allows harbors, which will be huge on this map.

Code of Laws (Frank's advantage) founds another religion, which I don't think we need. But it also allows courthouses, which can be a very good thing to go with our uncontested expansion.

Archery (Splime's advantage) can really help against the barb axemen we all know are coming soon.

Finances:

Frank's save has worked more of the cottage-type tiles. He's got three villages up and a nice influx of capital. His GNP is 34 Gold per turn allowing 70% science, break even.

Splime's save has a GNP of 30 gold for 60% + 3 per turn.

Pholk's save also makes 30 gold for 60%, +2/turn.

Infrastructure:

I like that Pholk's building lighthouses. I don't like his angry citizen in Green Dot. I'm undecided on the pyramids. High food means specialists + representation can be nice, but we've already built two ancient wonders.

Pholk's also already got a boat out (though empty--easily fixable).

Frank's got Splimesylvania hooked up on the trade route, with the silver mined and nearly hooked up. Though I have to seriously question building a forge in Green Dot. Maybe later when we mine the hills, but it's a one-hammer town at the moment. (Granted, 1 happiness with forge + silver is nice, but it won't happen for a while.)

Splime's 2 turns away from having the forge in the capital, and close to having the silver hooked up in his namesake.

Conclusion:

To me, Frank's save has a lot going for it. I'd vote for it right now, but I've not read anyone else's arguments. If I did inherit Frank's save, I'd first switch production in Green Dot and would consider changing research paths.

My $0.02

Edit: Sorry Splime, I failed to notice your settler. Strong point to consider.

Edit2 : Just to reitterate, WTF, Pholk? Who taught you how to count?

If I may be so bold as to lobby for my own save, I decided to not research Archery when copper popped up under Splimesylvania. I figure axemen are just fine at protecting against barbarians.

Please note, also, I have 2 choppers working in the capitol. If properly managed, they'll train a settler there without slowing down growth or construction of a forge there.

The silver mine is only a turn away from being hooked up, once the worker completes the road there (it may already be hooked up).

I might go along with Pholk's pyramid attempt except that he's already chopped most of the forest around Splimesylvania and there are still 55 turns reemaining. That will drop some in 8 turns when the stone quarry is built but it's quite likely the attempt will not finish in time and then we're left without forests there. It might have been better to gang up workers at the stone quarry first, then start chopping. The bonus hammers would have counted double, then.

Maybe I overvalue forges too much, but with Industrious trait, they're cheap and everything gets built faster once they're complete. A 50% bonus is nothing to sneeze at.

I could live with any of the three saves. We've got bronze and axemen. We've got a couple of okay city sites yet to develop, though we'll be in better shape if the galley reveals more continent behind that mountain but I suspect that's improbable).

I vote for my save based on the slight lead in research (via improved economy) and stronger military.

I like your save more as well. I went Pyr, really, as a lark, but i'm the first to admit that I don't know allthat i should about chopping...didn't know that stone would've doubled the output...i guess when you're chopping for any wonder that uses stone...

also, we're not industrious...Creative, Spiritual

AND, i'm not sure that i had resources on for my map...ocmpletely missed that Splime had copper...what was i doing when i played htis set? :smoke:

Isn't that the best reason for playing concurrent games? To learn from one another?

Doh! I knew that!

I didn't miss the copper under Splime. Rather, I did a happy dance!

No, the reason for playing concurrent games is so you're not stuck when one member (read: Pholk) weeds out half his damn turns.:p

I didn't miss the copper under Splime.

Okay, so maybe naming a city Splimsylvania was a bit confusing, huh?

No, no...i deserve it...the pyraminds were one thing...i was typing up the report saying, why did you build the pyramids?? but the copper thing...geez!! the funny part is that i conscienciously left off Resources to keep the map 'pretty' ~

In case no one can tell, I'm laughing my a_s off. Pholk's played some great turns in this game and he's kicking serious tail in his All War SG. Truth is, none of his "mistakes" are any bad and we've all done them 900 times. It's just that in concurrent format, we have the liberty of picking apart every last detail.

That and we have all day to sit here and snark at each other :) passes the day...and i was pretty psyched about my AW turns...also, in my free time, i'm cooking up another SG w/an intersting approach, but i must wait until i one of my 92 other ones close before i start up...

Personally, I'm liking my save, for the impending wonder -- the Colussus. If we do it in Green Dot, my save has a mine set up, and possibly a forge soon. Copper, when hooked up, will do a double speed thing on the collussus, w/ help from a possible forge. I also think a settler is pretty big, and will allow us to get that peninsula city up.

Splime, don't be embarassed to vote for yourself. You played your turnset well. I've personally not yet decided. It's between you and Frank. Sorry Pholk.

Sorry Pholk.
I don't mind. I'm here to learn. :)

"The circle is now complete. Now I am the master..."

"Only a master of the pyramids, Pholk..."

I just like my save too much...

sorry splime. had to go with my first instinct.

That's fine. OK, 15 turns, frankcor's save. Spoiler Time ends friday night, saturday night is the deadline.

BTW, I think this is going to turn out to be a fun game. At first I was ticked by all the desert, but it seems all is relative. Of course, we'll know better when we actually meet someone...

..heh, yeah. At least they're not all warmongers...

Oh yeah, REMEMBER THAT 480 BC IS TURN 1, not 0. I noticed that I accidentally went over by one, and got 480 BC, so seeing that frankcor is at the same date, the same applies to his save.
