Spl01 - Noobish Players Try the Concurrent Format

very good point on the circumnavigation, Frank. Also, very cool on the dual versions post. I was thinking I'd have to have them on separate partitions. Here's hoping they're that easy in practice

i've dual patched as well ~ what confused me is that they are talking about the directories there, not the actual Civ 4.exe file...so i'm ready to go either way...

also, I obviously don't think having a galley empty matters all that much , esp as we have another right near the Home island and one w/a scout by france ~ if i did, it'd have a unit on it ~ i wanted to get exploring ASAP and meet some other civs to try...

i'm leaning frank at this point, but you do have circum bonus going N and S, right??

That's correct. I'm almost certain that with tilted axis map, the circumnavigation goes N and S. The poles are in the E and W.

good point on circumnavigation. I'll take another look, using my 1.61 version now...

I'll be patched up tonight, hopefully with dual versions so I can go either way.

Did I say that out loud?

Might as well start the vote now. Unfortunately, I still haven't had time to analyze.

I think that circum nav bonus really IS the equivelent of a wonder much as it used to be and being a few turns away from that is worthwhile...even if it means war w/japan to do it, it's worth it in the end.

**off topic**
I started my first Monarch game last week and I WON on saturday...space, late 60s!
Spoiler :
I picked Washington and, oddly considering how popular he is here, have never really played as him. I was boxed in qucickly on my continent to three cities, but was able to nab copper. My weakest neighbor was Izzy (she was buddhist, the res of us, [Fred and Saladin] were Jewish)and I annexed her territory early on w/a sword, cat, elephant war. I was behind in tech so i relaxed and built up, trying to get a tech lead through trading. Later, Fred founded Taoism and revolted. I got Sally to declare on him for some techs, and I declared sometime later. I also got the nav bonus and found that the rest of the civs were all backward. (I played on Fractal ~ crazy map ~ cheers to Soren for the sheer randomness :) ) Well, I razed a small german border town and captured Berlin, splitting germany in half, 3 cities in the south, 4 in the north. Well, i quickly mopped up in the south, and made peace as I was seeing muskets in the north, while i had JUST nabbed gunpowder. So, headed for Military Trad w/my free tech from Liberalism :D and redclared once my first cavs were on teh plains. Reduced Germany to one city. Lesson: never leave them to one city; you need to deal w/"we yearn to rejoin.." penalties . . . so, I teched along and built up my army, quietly building most of the late wonders. i was originally aiming for a diplo so I finished up Germany once I got Industrialism and my Seals and then quickly moved in on Arabia w/three separate armies. The Arab-American war was 1859-1875 ce. not bad. So i now had 50% of the world's pop and friendly relations w/the mongols, who, along w/the aztecs, were the only one's left (the aztecs having conquered their whole, smaller, continent). Stupid frickin Mongols voted for Monty...he didn't win anything but I couldn't get Diplo  so i went for space...launced in the late 1960s. I was proud of me and thought i'd share. Rolled up a random, 11 civ, Large Fractal (it's a pangea), and i'm the incas. Should be fun :)

You're inspiring me to try for my first Monarch win.
What?!? If even Pholkhero can do it, anybody can?!?! Is that it?? it's 90% mental. Rex says he's terrified of Emperor, but i'd be willing to bet he'd win on that level. This next game i started i'm not so sure about; i haven't reallhy played as the Incas much, PLUS the new Epic 2 at RB Civ is just out and THAT's a Monarch Archipalego! I'm gonna be sweatin' bullets

I guess I don't see a terrible difference between the three. I'm not yet convinced that we can circumnavigate prior to optics. But even if we can, have we seen any other boats? We still have the lead there with either save.

Now, circumnavigate is big, as are all meritime benifits. That's why I picked Pholk's save. He's invested a few turns into compass. I don't really like that Frank went back and grabbed archery, a tech I don't think we'll need this game.

If frank had gone for compass, I'd probably have voted for him. Likewise with Splime.

Rex, you're probably right about Archery. I was thinking that sooner or later, we're going to end up sharing an island with an AI in possession of axemen and the archers will be needed. But you do make a sound argument for Compass, for sure.

And definitely, circumnavigation is within grasp with any of the others. I stick with my vote for Splime.

if splime ever joins us again (bedding fire splime??), i'm thinking 20 turns would be better...15 will (or would've in 1.52) will put us at 250 ~ what an ugly number...300..much better...

i guess, though, we should see if the 1.61 upgrade will push our clock up a few years...

As I've said before, I have literally no time on Mondays, special cases excepted. Damnit... tiebreaker... Really, I kinda like my save the best, simply because it seems to be geared towards the Colussus more, which is something I hope to get. About 15 turns: we've done three 15t rounds so far. If we do another 15, we have 60t done, which is nice, becaus it's divisible by 10.

Anyway, hopefully my save isn't buried too far back, and we can start with 15t. Spoiler Zone Ends Thursday Night, saves must be in by Friday Night.

Come on, Splime. We don't even listen to our wives when they tell us important crap about kids and bills. What makes you think we'd remember what you wrote last week? :)

Cool, so Splime's save, 15 turns, right?

I'm on it!

er ... is it just me? I just downloaded Splime's save again from page 23 to make sure I use the right one, but when I start it up, it's telling me the year is 325BC?

Nevermind.
