Byzantium

On the Horizon was a trail of dust, blowing in the wind. It was still distant, but as the hours passed it became closer and closer. Soon figures could be recognized, 1500 men were marching into Asia. Led by General Romalus, they marched in the breeze. Toward Ankara, the barbaric Ottoman capital. Romalus was in sight of the city, with his army of spearmen, archers, and cavalry. It was getting late, and they settled down for the night. The attack was to happen in the morning. When Romalus awoke, he heard the blowing horns of the Ottoman Army. Quickly Romalus, organized his army and prepared for the defense, but it was not enough. He was driven back away from the city, now 25 miles away, he had to reorganize and prepare a new plan; a plan to crush the Ottoman army, take Ankara and then all of Asia.

Update 3, 1600bce

The world continues its "progressive" pace. The years of city-states and barbarian tribes is all but over, as leaders forge mighty empires and hordes of barbarians rampage the countryside across the known-world....

In Caledonia, for example, war continues. Herbridia soon catipulates to Caledonia seeing as they have no army and no real force to fight with. Of course, this minor conquest is not nearly enough for the thirst of the Caledonian warlords. Thus, another invasion is launched into Orcadia.

Orcadia is ready for this of course, as the clan itself was organized just for this purpose. Caledonian Archers approached the highlands to fight what they expected to be a surprised Orcadian army, but instead found them ready with fortifications in each city and several battalions of spearman & archers to meet them. Clashing in the mountains in classic Scottish fashion, the Caledonians are finally defeated when they try to maneuver around to Inverness. Tired and ragged, the archer unit seeks a retreat and manages to make one barely to newly taken Herbridia.
Caledonia has another trick up its sleave though, but it too faces an unexpected challenge. Using thier navy, the Caledonians launched a bold invasion of the Orcadian northlands, taking island after island with no resistance. But once they reached nearer to the mainland they realized....lo and behold, the Orcadians have a navy. A grand naval battle commences (by bronze age standards atleast). The Caledonians win, but not without great losses. Unlike the Orcadians, Caledonia had soldiers on thier ships...and lost atleast 1/3 of thier invasion force in the battle. Still, a beachhead has been established. Orcadia has severely weakened the Caledonian military as a whole, but its lacking in numbers might come back to haunt them in the end.
(Caledonia: -250 archers, -200 spearmen, -100 Druids, -20 galleys)(Orcadia: -100 spearmen, -100 archers, -30 galleys)

Caledonia also attempts to convert, by word and sword, the clans of the Gray. The Druid recruits are rather new, and thus not as practiced in the art of talking. Therefore...they use the sword alot. Some progress has been made, these clans are not nearly as strong as the Orcadians or even the Herbridians.

There are some rumblings of clan discontent within Caledonia, but the leader promises changes are the way! Unfortunately, the details are vague and just leave people wondering if he is truly serious at all....

Northumbria continues on its warpath aswell. Wessex is the latest victim of the King's terrific battleplans, which now include: if we come across the enemy do the whole Hoplite thing you know tight formation marching forward KILLING ALL THOSE WHO DARE STAND AGAINST US!.
and send the 400 hundred other guys into wales to kick some serious ass.
While Wessex had plans for this, they did not really expect so much to be thrown at Wales. They have fallen back to Wessex proper you could say, with the Northumbrian armies bearing on them tremendously. Surrender is very unlikely though...Wessexians are not in any mood to be "peacefully destroyed".
(Northumbria: -200 archers, -300 spearmen)(Wessex: -300 archers, -200 spearmen)

The war against the Hesperides goes well in the island of Atlantis. In the north, a new general has arosen. His superior killed in battle, the bold general Herculaus has emboldened the Atlanteans in thier war vs Hesperides, as the Atlantean Fanatic units march on in an upwards arc, destroying all Hesperidian armies in thier path. Some cities have been founded aswell, although one planned in the South of Atlantis has been deemed to unsafe a location and put on hold until the Hesperidian influence is fully eradicated...
(Atlantis: -100 Fanatics, -100 spearmen, -50 archers)

A grand military parade is held in Atlantis Prime, in an essential defiance of anyone or anything that dares tangle with the Atlantean colossus. While theres not many recruits to be gained out of the deal, it does help with the whole Atlantis-is-better-than-everyone-else mentality. Construction continues on the Grand Temple of Ouranos, but engineers say they need more funds to continue such a marvelous structure (xen, dont forget this is st10 rules on wonders).

Atlantis attacks the Morrocans directly, in an attempt to create more settlements for the growing Atlantean population. Moroccan speed attacks, hit and run variety often, annoy the settlers and any kind of expansion has been slow. Also, this has led to increased raids on Tingis in the north. Another tried settlement in Cyreannica has failed, when the ships ran into a very bad storm. Some ships were sunk, while others found a way back to dock at Tartessos.
More Visigothians join Atlantis, but it appears no more are even close to willing to do as much. Atlantean currency has led to a new way of doing things, coinage. Schools have opened up, and while some worry this will lead to unneeded learning and expenditures, most praise the new schools. Most parents dont send thier children though, needing them for more "important" work around the home.

Cordoba grows slowly, and appears to be stagnating. The Grenadan Visigoths have pillaged much of the landscape of the Caliphate, finally being pushed back. The people are near revolt at the fact that nothing at all is being done...(-1 economy, -1 confidence)

Galicia has been formed, by the Basquean Visigoths, which were by far the most "civilized" of the Visigoths. They are interested in trade, and so far merchants have been sent to Atlantis and Cordoba looking for valued goods...

Astile does what it does....expanding and growing economy. Ofcourse, this means that a good deal of Astillian Barbs see the luxury of Astile life compared to thiers, and do 1 of 2 things. Join or destroy. Join has been the common idea in western Astillia, while destroy is the mantra in eastern Astillia. Either way, its clear the Astile culture is spreading fast throughout Western Europe, having already reached the borders of Etrusca and the highlands of the Pyranees in Iberia.

Etrusca has stayed quiet, despite the growing threat of the Tahret. Continueing thier expansion, they have met up with the Astillians...not so friendly, and have also drawn a border with Salzburg, who really wants nothing to do with them.

Tarhet begins its campaign against the Nubians, so far with success.

Sparta has begun to get the wheels moving on thier military machine....securing an alliance with the Athenians, Sparta has seen this the ripe oppurtunity to strike at Thebes-Thermopolye. They use the new ROP with Athens, persuades them to send hundreds of workers. Starting at dawn, the workers begin a massive underground mine project. Rushed, the mine is finished but not entirely stable. A few dozen Spartans are killed when the mine collapses shortly as the begin to exit, but no major casualties. The Corinthians on the other hand, are caught totally with thier "pants down" you could say, as much of thier garrisoned army is even at lunch. Little do they know thier about to be served up a can of Spartan sized whoop-ass.
Skirmishes go on in the city, but Spartan soldiers soon occupy Corinth itself, largely destroying the city and seizing priceless artifacts. The reinforcements to the city are more trained and battle-tested, but still are outflanked by the cunning Spartan commander Midasia.
Thebes suffers an attack aswell, by sea. Luckily for them, thier not quite as badly harmed, but its clear Thebes cannot win this war alone, what with Corinth crippled from within.
(Spartan Federation: -150 spearmen, -100 archers, -10 galleys)(Thermopolye-Thebes: -300 spearmen, -300 archers, -10 galleys)

Byzantine and Spartan merchant galleys have come upon a tale of horrible proportions...upon reaching the island of Cyprus, and taking a quick respite, the traders learn of a civilization in Judea of a people called the Pheonicians...(see spotlight)

But lets not concentrate on this now, lets go back to lesser atrocities...like burning of villages in the Byzantine-Ottoman war! The Byzantine army has scored huge victories in this war, but due to unexpected causes. Thier plan of distracting the Ottomans to an unexisting northern attack was brilliance and all that, but the greatest factor to Ottoman defeat oddly enough came from thier own people....and a new menace to the west. Led by the, now known as "counter-Sultan", the pro-Byzantine Ottoman army formed a ragtag battalions and met the Ottoman army guarding Ankara itself. The army was so small and meager, the somewhat larger and somewhat less meager forces managed to squeak out a victory. Of course, this new acquisition was soon given to the Byzantine forces.
The Hittites, sensing weakness, mercilessly destroyed the remaining parts of the sultandom, burning villages and pillaging where they rode.
Now that the dust is clear, its understanded only 2 powers exist in Asia Minor....the Hittites and the Byzantines. Who will come out on top?
(Byzantium: -50 spearmen, -30 archers, -10 galleys, +100 spearmen)

This victory has invigorated the Byzantines to wins over the Bulgars in settling rights...somethings in the water around Byzantium right now.

Much of the middle-east has gone silent....not much is known of the inner workings, and not much will be known until trade opens up (or a player takes a country).

Mnogoborie has become a desolate, icy, barren wasteland of corruption and pure craziness....it has dwelved into the depths of darkness you could say, becoming nothing more than a premier member of the Steppe Barbarian club.

Winterfell has found the local Finns to be friendly and more welcoming than you would expect....but they warn of ruthless tribes to the north, namely the Oulu, Lapps, and Vikings. Expansion is moderate, but agriculture flourishes due to several decades of decadent weather patterns. Lucky Winterfellians...
(+1 economy)

High Lord Rang-Xi finally looks like he is ready to do something, as he greets the world with battalions of spearmen and archers, who secure acre upon acre of fertile farmland for the fledgeling Shu state. The Xinjiangs havent been touched though, rather a series of forts built to make them stay out...hopefully.

Taiwan frees its mainland colony, calling it a mistake, and claiming it wants to be left alone in essence. The Taiwanese culture is vibrant though, and its hard not to create colonies when lands such as Japan & Phillipines have already been so affected by it...

The Mori religion is spread throughout Japan, but many clans are resisting it. Some have even gone as far as to try an invasion of the Mori. They are met with defeat, though, as the Mori are ready with a new kickass UU of course. The proto-Ninja, Mori Blades, live by a simple code and are defending Mori well. But they warn they are an offensive weapon, and larger invasions could break through.

"A crime of humanity, the Hittitian mongrels killed everything. It is the greatest tragedy this world has yet seen."- Annonolis Alexandross, Spartan Historian

It is a tale that went untold for centuries. The flourishing trade kingdom of Phoenicia, under the wise leadership of King Jasonius, was rich beyond word and expanded its trade-dom from Asia Minor to the Kushans of Central Africa. The people worked tirelessly, but lived largely in splendor, the standard of living rivaling that of Mediterranean rival Atlantis. All seemed well for Phoenicia, its immediate enemies were weak and its navy was strong enough to protect its interests and its army small but well trained to guard the small kingdom at land. This Kingdom seemed on its way to unfound glory, until 1 fateful day sent it spiraling to the pages of the history books....and not the way they intended.

You see, the citizens of Tyre were restless. They had heard the rustlings of a barbarian tribe uprising near the border, perhaps it had leaked over the border and was about to attack the city! People were worried, so the army sent a scout to figure out the situation. Several days later, they found the scout's decapitated, mutilated body in a crude box put on the outskirts of Tyre. Upon finding this, the commander of the Army was furious. The King was too, and being the noble and brave King he was, ordered a direct meeting with the barbarians themselves. Luckily for them, such an invitation was offered.

The Phoenicians were stunned, that upon entering Hattusus, they didnt find tattered tribal huts, but magnificent palaces. Clearly...it seemed this wasnt Hittitian built. The Phoenicians became worried at thier plight. Entering the palace, they spoke with the leader. A coldhearted, cruel soul, the leader threatened the life of everyone in Phoenicia. He demanded tribute from the "dog Phoenicians". His demand was met with defiancy from the King. Furious, he ordered them out....but oddly spared thier life. His last words to them were, "I shall spare your life despite your insolence....you will suffer with your people, and watch them as they die King Jasonius."

As he returned, Jasonius ordered a massive mobilization, but it was to late. The Hittitians had begun the march. With incredible speed, they stalked the landscape, moving like lightning in thier chariots and horsemen. Almost no regular infantry was seen, this army was built on speed....and something else, ruthlessness.

The Phoenician guards were soon overwhelmed at Tyre, the soldiers heads being put on the pikes of thier own spears to show the citizens exactly what thier foe was about. They wouldnt forget....of course, they wouldnt be alive after the second night either as the Hittitians burned the city to the ground, not before raping, pillaging, goring, and mutilating everybody in Tyre. They ransacked millions worth in gold, taking it back to Hattusus, before moving on.

King Jasonius proved a battler to the end, himself dying in the Battle of Sidon. The atrocities at Sidon were called "triple as worse" by the storytellers in Nicosia....so horrific, I dont find the need to describe them here. And as a final act of inhumanity, purposely stacked the bodies of the dead Phoenicians...the body count being equal to roughly 98% of the population of atleast 200,000.

And now, the Hittite menace lives on, growing ever larger. Armenia has kept its soveriegnty with monthly tributes, and even the barbarians are scared now. Byzantium, emboldened with victory over the Ottomans & Bulgars, seem to be the only one willing to stand up to the "Beast of the Middle East" which now has cast a shadow over a good portion of the world...noone feels safe walking in Constantinople or Ami, and they shouldnt. Noone is safe anymore.

Astile

In a quite night, without anyone noticing the king which his name will never be remembered has died. He did nothing speicel and even barley had writen the history of his reign in Astilla. One thing good he did, and this was bringing the next king of Astile. He was 18 when he rosed to throne. His name was Timo. After he was crowned he learned quickly all te history of Astile and begun to thinke how to make the country grow into new heights. No longer will Astile grow slowly under weakling kings, now it is time Astile will rule all Astillians and more!

Reformation of the army
For an expanding country with enemies on every border Astile had a very small army. Timo could now allow for this to continue. He begun to make laws in order to create an army that could defense, and expand, the borders of Astile. The first law was that from every family in Astile the first born boy must join the army. Yes this was an harsh rule but the army itself was changing. Each men earned money as he proggressed in the army and could send this money to his family. Now even peasents, that their son was in the army, begun to earn more money they could ever dream about. The new men that joined the army could choose between 3 training progrems, yes they had the right to choose. The second law was that every bow from a family, after the first has joined, that joins the army will earn his family some lands and a house that will be built from the kingdoms money. This 2 new laws were seen by many as a way to escape poverty, and not only in Astile proper.

Now, every boy that could join the army had the choice between 3 trainings.

The Alupi - This were the sworsmen of Astile. They were trained for 5 years in swordsmenship and than 2 years in spearmenship. They were an organized group in the army. Strong and ferious and highly trained, nothing could stand the Alupi. It was a great honor to be an Alupi, and if it's money you looked for in the Alupi organization it was the easiest to griw in ranks.

The Metari - This were a less organized but more trained group of the army. This were the horsmen of Astile. After joining the army they were trained in rising the horse and using the double-speared - a speicel spear invented for them that was piked in both edges - They were trained in this for 5 years. After this 3 more years were for training in bow using. The Metari were horsmen that wielded a double-spear and could use a bow when needed. They had a package of arrows right on their hrose and could carry many more arrows than normal foot-archers. Most of their riding training went on riding in forests as it was much harder and more needed in the forests of Astile.

The Aquari - Since the first time Astile have seen coasts many thought what is behind this seas. This was the third and final group in the army, the seamen. In this group of the army a men could earn the most money, but he also had the work the most. Every Aquary for 5 years had to learn how to build ships and afterwards had to work in building them. Many never passed on tot he next rank but in the next rank you became a true seamen. The one who move to boat... The boats of Astile weren't as big as others but being a bit smaller made them faster. Their edge was strengned to tackle into enemy ships, if any will ever be found. 2 ling of rowers were in the boat, 1 for each side. The boat itself was the weapone ususaly. Somthimes unmounted Metari joined in case fire-archers were needed.

The King knew this reformations will cost money... He did not cared, he will have a large organized army much more quickly in this way rather than choosing a men after men into the army... The first organized army was about to apeare...
